 Hi  all,

Have  been  reading  up  and  collecting  a  lot  of  info  for  setting  up  a  planted  tank.
This  will  be  my  first  tank  EVER!

So  thought  of  putting  all  of  that  info  in  one  place  as  a  reference  for  anyone  with  a  similar  setup.
 Need  inputs  on  some  aspects.

 Tank:  20"  x  12"  x  12"
 http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=30313

Substrate:  6L  ADA  AS  Amazonia  New
Need  advice  on  how  to  go  about  using  ADA.
Do  I  need  to  use  anything  else  with  ADA  to  tone  it  down  considering  the  small  tank  size?

 Lights:  36W  PLL  6500K
Am  using  a  concealed  ceiling  fixture  with  a  built  in  reflector.
 http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=29995
 http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=29960

 CO2:  DIY  with  2  x  1Ltr  bottles
 Will  I  need  Flourish  Excel?
Looking  at  options  for  diffusion  (Reactor  connected  to  the  filter  outlet  maybe)
 http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/CO2/
 http://www.qsl.net/w2wdx/aquaria/diyco2.html

 Filter:  ???
Since  it  is  a  small  tank,  need  something  that  will  take  upp  minimal  space  inside  the  tank.
My  budget  only  allows  an  HOB  or  a  DIY  external  filter.
 Will  HOB  interfere  with  CO2?
 http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=30419

 Ferts:  ???
Need  suggestions  on  using  Micro,  Macro,  any  other  ferts.
With  ADA,  do  I  need  to  start  looking  at  ferts  initially?

Hardscape:  Sloping  landscape  with  light  coloured  sand  and  locally  collected  rocks

 Plants:  Carpet  plants
 http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=30340
I  am  thinking  of  going  with  an  emersed  setup.
 http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/general-planted-tank-discussion/52332-new-method-start-up-algae-free.html
Plan  is  to  get  the  plants  to  grow  in  a  tray  while  I  am  setting  up  my  substrate/hardscape  etc,
and  have  good  amount  of  plants  that  I  can  then  plant  in  the  tank.
Please  advise  which  of  these  can  be  made  to  grow  with  the  above  setup  and  a  lot  of  patience  Razz
[Update:  Will  be  trying  the  ones  in  bold  and  will  be  reporting  the  results  here]

     Glossostigma
     HC  Cuba
     Marsilea  Hirsuta
     Elatine  Triandra
     Staurogyne  Porto  Velho
     Echinodorus  Tennelus
     Sagittaria  Sp.
     Eleocharis  Parvula
     Lilaeopsis  Brasiliensis
     Blyxa  Japonica
     Riccia
     Micranthemum  Micranthemoides
     Micranthemum  Umbrosum
     Pellia

 Planting  and  Maintenance:  ???

 Fauna:
 To  be  added  MUCH  later.
Fish:  Rummy  Nose  Tetra,  Cardinal  Tetra,  Neon  Tetra,  Harlequin  Rasboras

Ok,  I  have  got  my  tank  and  have  filled  it  with  water  to  test  if  it  leaks.
The  LFS  guy  asked  me  to  fill  it  with  water  and  add  salt  to  it  to  treat  the  glue  that  is  used  to  stick  the  glass.  Is  =  this  really  needed?

I  have  got  a  couple  of  plastic  trays  with  Glosso  and  HC  planted.  this  is  mainly  to  test  if  I  can  actually  grow  these  plants  at  all  or  not.
If  I  do  succeed  in  getting  them  to  grow  emersed,  what  should  be  m  next  steps?

I  will  be  collecting  some  rocks  to  use  as  hardscape  this  weekend.
Once  I  have  those  I  intend  to  start  with  the  tank  setup.

I'll  be  using  ADA  and  need  some  advice  setting  up  the  substrate.
Should  the  entire  substrate  be  ADA?  Or  do  I  need  a  layer  or  some  other  material  at  the  bottom  or  top  (of  the  ADA)?
I'll  need  to  create  slopes  in  the  substrate  and  was  wondering  if  I  could  use  some  thermocol  to  create  raised  slopes...

 Vaidu,
You  cant  use  thermocol  to  create  slopes..  they  will  just  pop  out  from  below.
Use  some  rocks  or  drift  woods..  instead.
After  the  emmersed  setup  growth,  when  you  fill  up  the  water,  make  sure  the  Co2  is  high  and  lighting  as  well..
But  rumor  is  that  HC  needs  cool  temp  to  start  with  initially  to  acclimatize  to  the  submerged  growth.

When  I  said  thermocol,  I  meant  that  I'll  use  it  at  the  bottom  and  place  the  rocks  on  top  of  it.  I  know  it'll  float,  and  hence  will  make  sure  it  stays  at  bottom  by  placing  weights.
I  don't  have  enough  ADA  to  create  steep  slopes.
Is  there  anything  else  that  I  can  use  to  increase  the  amount  of  substrate?
Like  adding  some  kind  of  gravel  at  the  bottom  and  using  ADA  on  the  top  where  the  plants  will  actually  grow?

Ok,  Got  the  point  on  Thermocol..
Take  some  fine  meshed  bathing  scrubber..  fill  it  with  any  sand  and  tie  it  up,  place  it  where  you  need  the  slope  and  top  off  with  ADA..  idea  is  to  keep  ADA  and  the  sand  from  mixing  up.

 Cool!
So  can  I  still  use  thermocol  along  with  the  sand  bags  if  needed?

So  ADA  can  go  on  top?  I  have  seen  people  using  ADA  at  the  bottom  with  river  sand  as  top  layer  (Nanomania  does  that).
 Any  views  on  this?

 Yes  Vaidu,
┬áBy  all  means  use  the  thermocol  along  with  the  Sand  bags..
You  can  use  the  sand  on  top  and  ADA  bottom  or  vice-versa  as  you  wish..  but  eventually  they  will  get  mixed  up.
And  your  precious  ADA  cant  be  separated  once  mixed  and  will  be  waste  if  you  want  to  reuse  it  in  another  tank  or  scape..

Ok,  then  sand  in  bags  is  the  way  to  go!
How  about  using  the  gravel  used  for  road  constructions,  at  the  bottom  to  create  slopes?
Asking  this  cos  I  have  some  with  me.

Yes  they  will  do  fine,  as  long  as  they  stay  in  the  bags..  make  sure  that  that  are  bigger  in  size  so  that  they  will  not  slip  through  the  mesh  bag.

 Hi  Mr.  Nidhi,

Shall  we  stick  the  Thermocol  With  Glue...where  we  want  to  create  mountain  like  slopes?

OK,  that  kinda  takes  care  of  the  substrate.

Now  coming  to  carpet  plants,  what  kind  of  plants  have  you  all  grown  successfully  with  similar  setups  as  mine?

I  got  a  bunch  of  Glosso  and  though  it  had  yellowed  a  lot,  its  begun  to  pick  up  in  an  emersed  tray,  while  my  HC  bunch  (which  looked  quite  healthy)  is  slowly  dying...
I  am  looking  other  plants  that  can  grow  well.  Will  try  to  grow  small  bunches  of  these  and  then  decide  on  what  to  keep  for  the  actual  tank  depending  on  how  well  each  grows.

Any  experiences  with  any  of  these?
 Eleo  Parvula
 Marsilea  Hirsuta
 Elatine  Triandra
 E.  Tennelus
 Lilaeopsis  Brasiliensis
 Sagittaria  Sp.  (Dwarf)
 Riccia
 Blyxa  Japonica

Nope..  not  needed,  since  rocks  will  be  placed  on  top  of  it..  its  not  going  any  where.  The  slope  will  be  created  by  using  rocks  and  not  the  thermocol.
Thermocol  is  used  only  to  cushion  the  bottom  glass  from  the  sharp  edges  of  the  rocks.

IMO..  Glosso  would  be  the  easiest  plant  once  they  stabilize..
HC  Cuba  is  a  bit  difficult  plant..  and  other  plants  to  avoid  is  Riccia,  they  will  be  a  head  ache  after  some  time..
Blyxa  Japonica  is  also  a  bit  difficult..  all  others  can  be  grown  easily..
