What  is  a  good  brand  for  inexpensive  internal  filters?
I  was  thinking  of  buying  a  Boyu  powerhead  and  try  fabricating  a  filter  so  that  only  the  powerhead  is  inside  the  tank,  with  the  filter  compartment  outside.
This  way  I  could  also  use  the  powerhead  for  DIY  CO2  difussion.

As  already  suggested  a  small  power  filter  is  best  for  your  tank.
Designing  a  external  filter  is  not  easy,  but  it  has  been  done  by  many  members  on  IAH  itself,  search  for  those  threads.
However  be  sure  that  your  design  is  leak  proof  or  else  you  will  have  tank  water  all  over  your  floor.

Plan  was  for  each  subject  to  have  its  own  topic,  and  this  thread  was  supposed  to  collate  all  of  the  info  from  all  those  topics.
Look  at  the  first  post  in  this  topic...
Will  keep  updating  it  with  findings  from  all  topics...

BUT!  most  amazing  thing  is  in  both  topics  (correct  me  if  I  am  wrong)  you  haveny  mentioned  anything  about  any  fishes,  ONLY  PLANTED  TANK  thats  it?  so  why  do  you  need  a  filter  then?  there  is  gonna  be  no  bio  load  so  why  filter?

I  will  be  getting  some  schooling  fish  once/if  I  get  a  good  planted  tank  set  up...
 Rummy  Nose/Neon/Cardinal  Tetra
 Some  Shrimp
Ottos,  if  needed  (for  algae  control)

So  are  you  saying  that  if  there  is  no  fish,  there's  no  need  for  ANY  filtration?

A  fishless  tank  will  also  require  water  changes  -  not  because  of  water  just  getting  cloudy,  even  plants  require  fresh  water.  In  2  weeks  the  plants  itself  will  change  chemistry  of  the  water.

But  these  "chemistry  changes"  are  a  compound  and  cannot  be  possibly  controlled  by  filters  I  guess  Very Happy

 Agree  on  the  water  change...

Sandeep  or  Sai  had  suggested  that  I  set  my  substrate,  fill  water  and  run  my  filter  on  an  empty  tank  for  2-3  days...
What  would  that  be  for  then?

Anyways,  I'll  be  adding  fish  later  on...
Just  want  to  know  what  purposes  does  a  filter  serve  in  a  planted  tank,  with  fish...

 This  is  what  I  know/assume:
 1.  Keeping  water  debris  free  -  mechanical  filtration
 2.  Cultivate  beneficial  bacteria  -  biological  filtration
 3.  Maintain  water  chemistry  -  chemical  filtration

Not  sure  how  important  each  of  the  above  is  ina  tank  like  what  I  am  trying  to  setup...  Too  many  variables  to  just  do  what  some  else  is  doing.  Hence  wanted  someone  to  comment  on  what  would  be  the  requirements  for  MY  particular  tank.

IMO  a  DIY  sump  filter  with  the  advantage  of  multiple  media  and  if  you  have  good  space,  would  be  the  best  filter  Smile

Will  take  some  time  out  soon  and  post  a  simple  filter  design  that  I  have  been  thinking  about...

As  stated  earlier,  my  main  criteria  (for  my  magical  filter/diffuser  thingy)  were:

 1.  Good  water  circulation  -  I  read  that  this  helps  to  check  algae  growth  as  well
 2.  Good  mechanical  filtration  -  To  keep  the  water  as  crystal  clear  as  possible
 3.  Good  diffuser  for  my  DIY  CO2
 4.  Minimal  equipment  inside  the  tank
 5.  Anything  else  that  I  need  out  of  a  filter?

Do  I  need  biological  filtration?  If  so,  how  do  I  go  about  it?  Just  selecting  specific  filter  media,  like  bio  balls,  ceramic  rings,  gravel?

Based  on  all  this,  I  am  trying  to  figure  out  what  I  need;  and  mind  you,  I  am  on  a  shoe  string  budget  Razz

This  might  be  of  some  use  to  you  ...  has  been  working  since  5  months,  no  problems  at  all
In  case  if  you  feel  current  is  strong,  adding  extra  sponge  solves  issues

 @jayendra,

Have  had  a  look  at  your  filter  and  really  liked  its  simplicity.
Trying  something  similar  (link  in  above  post)  but  with  lesser  surface  agitation...
