Hi,
Was surprised to find that a guy in my neighbourhood was dealing in discus as a wholesaler (very unlikely for Delhi due to extreme temp). Well, rushed their to pick up some for myself and to my utter disappointment found everything has already been sold except these 8 little mismatched (due to size) SUNSHINE or yellow crystal babies, which nobody wanted.
They were very dull in a tank with pathetic water conditions. were being fed dry tubifex and looked like would only survive for a little while longer. So I decided to rescue and raise them up in a spare 24"x28"x28" tank at home.
now they are being fed BHM with 70/30 ratio of heart and liver 6 times a day. With 20% WC in the noon and 100% WC at night after the final feeding for the day.
I will keep updating this thread every now and then with their progress report and pics. Invaluable suggestions and inputs from fellow IAH members about this effort is much appreciated.
Thanks
Happy fishing
PS: sorry for the poor pic quality and water marks on the tank glass. next one will be a better update. |

Whats your tank temp? Why are you feeding them Beef Heart mixed with liver, I mean why the liver? Just curious whats the advantage?
How are you doing wc do you have stored water somewhere or from tap directly? |

Hi Nanu,
The temp is set constant to 28deg celcius. I do have storage where water stays for two days before being put in the tank but I also have hypo crystals and for this tank I have been using them before introducing the water in the tank.
Well I added liver for two reasons: 1) its a great source of nutrients. 2) its a recipe as told by the maestro Shiva Nair for discus babies (though he mentioned pork hearth and liver).
But liver pollutes the water very quickly so I try to do a partial WC after every mail and then 100% after the last meal.

Good luck Rahul.
Last time I saw real sunshine discus was at Neil Mandevia's place many years back. Man those were really bright yellow.
My 2 cents advice - Avoid feeding Tetrabits, Hikari biogold or any other dry food containing Astaxanthin if you are looking forward for real sunshine colour. Just raise them on pure BHM diet. |

Hi guys,
its time for monthly update. Its been a month since I adopted these babies. After a month of 100% WC every day and a solid diet of BHM. They are growing up. Out of 8, six are over 2.5" and 2 have slower rate of growth. They will be shifted to a tank of their own soon for faster growth.
have been feeding them only BHM as suggested by Yogesh. Today will prepare PHM for them. Will update you guys again soon. Meanwhile, here are some pics. |
