Also  how  the  LED  will  be  ditributed  !!  Is  like  Shelly's  12"  Cube  fittings  !!

I  need  same  light  coverage  each  and  every  corner  of  the  tank.

You  may  not  be  saving  much  on  power,  but  you  save  on  the  bulb  replacement.  you  are  supposed  to  change  the  bulbs  like  PL-L  or  CFL  every  1  to  1.5  year.  but  you  need  not  change  these  LED  for  8  -  10  years..

but  nidhi  price  for  a  36  watt  pll  is  just  130  but  of  a  30  watt  led  of  this  kind  is  1500  so  it  is  not  that  i  think.  I  dont  think  you  need  that  much  wpg  on  these  leds.  But  the  question  is  then  what  is  the  common  rule  on  which  we  can  decide  the  number  of  watts  for  a  tank

 The  more  the  better  !

You  can  never  reproduce  sunlight  in  your  tank  !  Plants  love  sunlight  !

Our  brightest  lit  tanks  receive  less  light  than  a  secluded  shaded  area  on  a  cloudy  day  !

There  is  a  lot  of  heat  from  LEDs,  you  need  a  heat  sink  to  get  it  out.

If  you  see  the  pic  I  posted  for  the  20  watt  floodlight,  the  lower  casing  is  a  heat  sink  !

Luckily  the  heat  can  be  redirected  away  upwards  with  a  heat  sink  !

A  80  watt  LED  fixture  weighs  12  kgs  and  a  50  watt  LED  Fixture  weighs  6.5  kilos  !
The  weight  is  primarily  the  heat  sink  !  Wish  something  lighter  is  available  !

The  primary  thing  is  deciding  lighting  for  a  planted  tank  is  lumens  not  watts,  as  long  as  we  keep  on  talking  about  watts  we  will  always  get  confused.
Watt  refers  to  energy  which  is  being  consumed  by  the  bulb/tube.
To  put  things  in  perspective,a  20w  normal  incandescent  will  give  280  lumen,20w  CFl  will  give  1250  lumens,  a  20watt  LED  will  give  2100  lumens.

This  is  where  I  think  LED  score  over  everything  else,  watt  per  watt  they  give  highest  illumination.
Also  their  reflector  seems  to  be  of  very  good  quality,  which  is  a  added  bonus.
I  was  earlier  thinking  about  in  for  36*2  pll  reflector  fittings,  however  I  could  have  only  3  such  fittings  over  my  tank,  now  these  might  be  a  better  option.

what  about  dimming  i;e   does  the  led  weaken  after  long  usage  like  a  year,  the  plls  go  dim  after  long  usage, does  the  same  thing  happen  to  leds?

Yep  youre  right.

This  is  where  I  think  it  goes  wrong!  not  all  LEDs  will  have  that  efficacy,  one  in  topic  is  at  1800lumens(90lm/W).  Not  at  all  bad.  But  hobbiests  can  blindly  go  wrong  with  choice  in  local  markets/sites  when  they  just  hear  LED,  and  there  are  lower  end  ones.

Coming  to  the  (fluroscent)T5  philips  which  gives  80-90lm/W,  we  still  are  dealing  with  low  efficiency.  http://www.ecat.lighting.philips.com/l/lamps/fluorescent-lamps/tl5/t5-standard/927926086555_na/

It  is  not  a  good  idea  to  use  this  type  of  one  LED  lamp  on  an  Aquarium,  LED  lights  do  not  have  all  the  wave  lengths  so  it  is  better  to  use  many  small  units  of  bulbs  with  a  ratio  of  Red,  Blue  and  White  LEDs,  as  far  as  I  know  1/3  of  blue  and  2/3  of  Red  is  suggested,  and  the  whites  are  desired  to  visualise  the  Aquarium  nicely.  Many  sites  suggest  that  for  plants  the  Red  and  Blue  is  required  more  than  other  spectrums.  I  hope  you  are  using  only  white  LEDs  for  a  tank  without  plants,  otherwise  it  is  not  desirable.  We  get  many  economical  Red  and  Blue  LED  lamps,  modules  and  strips  and  they  can  be  fixed  many  of  them  on  the  top  of  the  Aquariums  to  get  good  results.  I  am  using  the  same.
