 Hi  All,

Getting  a  3  x  1.5  x  1.5  Cement  Tank  for  Live  bearers.....  planning  to  add  few  floating  plants  for  the  fry  to  hide.....

 1.  Can  I  keep  the  tank  under  direct  Sunlight?
 2.  If  yes,  How  should  I  handle  it  during  rainy  days...  will  the  overflow  of  water  make  the  fish  drain  through  the  overflowing  water?
 3.  Do  I  need  to  provide  any  filter  or  aeration?
 4.  Can  I  keep  guppies,  swordtails  together?
 5.  A  list  of  plants  that  I  could  add?
 6.  What  is  the  feed?
 7.  Any  other  suggestions  on  this?

 Waiting  for  your  reply.....

 Thanks

 1.  Yes.
 2.  When  you  build  the  tank,  put  a  PVC  drain  pipe  on  one  of  the  walls  about  3"  below  the  top.  Cover  the  inner  end  of  the  tube  with  a  fine  screen.
 3.  No.
 4.  Yes.
 5.  Anything  you'd  keep  in  your  aquarium,  plus  water  lilies.
 6.  What  you  give  them  normally.
 7.  Good  luck!

 Thanks  Rahul......

Would  cabomba  do  for  the  fry  to  hide??

I  think  that  is  the  only  floating  plant  available  here  in  the  LFS...  may  be  I  could  get  some  other  varieties  from  Kiran.....

Would  WC  once  a  week    would  do??

How  should  I  bring  the  fishes  in?  Can  I  add  the  tap  water  to  the  tank  and  immediately  add  the  fishes??  Or  should  I  wait  for  any  cycling  or  acclimatising  the  fishes??

Cabomba  and  weekly  water  changes  will  do  just  fine.  You  can  even  skip  the  water  changes  once  the  plants  have  taken  hold.

No,  you  cannot  just  add  water  and  fish.  Wait  a  couple  of  weeks,  till  the  tank  has  stabilised  and  the  plants  are  established.  There  is  no  difference  between  a  cement  tank  and  a  glass  one,  other  than  the  material  used.

How  is  the  cycling  process  takes  place  here  Rahul??  Could  you  explain?  We  don't  have  any  meida  for  the  bacteria  to  take  hold.....

Can  you  suggest  any  other  floating  plants  other  than  Cabomba  which  is  available  in  India??

There  is  also  an  another  plant  that  is  commonly  used  by  majority  of  the  breeders  in  their  cement  tank.  It  is  commonly  called  Foxtail.  Do  not  know  the  scientific  name  of  the  plant.  I  also  use  the  same  for  my  cement  tank  which  contains  lots  of  live  bearers.  This  plant  does  not  have  any  roots  and  is  a  floating  variety.

 Regards,

Cycling  will  take  place  in  the  exact  same  way  as  in  a  standard  aquarium...  the  microorganisms  involved  in  the  process  do  not  need  a  filter/filter  medium,  any  surface  will  do.
