Hi  guys  most  awaited  DIY  from  Mumbai  members  a  DIY  aquarium  chiller.  Now  it  is  in  concept  stage  and  still  on  paper.  I  have  2  concepts.  I  propose  let's  put  all  head  together  and  make  this  DIY  successful.

 Concept  1

While  searching  for  DIY  aquarium  chiller,  I  found  2-3  post  about  DIY  chiller.  In  this  post  people  has  used  old  fridge  and  PVC  pipe.

Take  old  fridge  make  two  holes  on  top  as  inlet  and  outlet.  Make  coil  out  of  PVC  pipe.  Put  inside  fridge  and  keep  inline  in  filter  out  let.  Control  temp  using  fridge  control.  That's  it.
But  but  in  India  nobody  will  have  spare  fridge  for  this  purpose.  Hence  I  started  searching  for  mini  fridge
 Bingo
I  got  mini  usb  powered  desktop  fridge  on  eBay  and  price  for  this  is  just  12**  yes  it's  not  typo.  Sharing  link  here.  Mods  please  delete  this  link  if  it  is  against  the  rule

 http://www.ebay.in/itm/USB-GIFT-MINI-FRIDGE-COOLER-WARMER-/330779301416?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_203&hash=item4d03fb9628#ht_2341wt_922

Supplier  is  from  chennai.  If  chennai  member  can  buy  for  me  (  I  will  pay)  I  am  ready  to  try  this  DIY  project.  It  will  be  cheaper  in  chennai  than  ebay.  Max  costing  will  be  3***  for  complete  chiller.

One  more  option  is  on  eBay  of  7  ltr  mini  fridge  price  is  4***  which  looks  little  finished  products  which  can  be  used  for  bigger  tank

 I  have  some  doubts  here
 1)  will  be  temp  constant  throughout  running
2  )  are  this  fridge  design  for  24/7  running

 What  say  guys  ?.?.?.?.?.

 Concept  2

I  know  one  guy  who  supply  customized  kitchen  equipment  and  furniture  for  our  projects.  Where  in  we  have  customized  fridge  and  hot  cold  benmari.  I  can  ask  this  guy  to  make  small  chiller  for  us.  And  it  will  be  a  cheaper  than  professional  model.  For  this  I  will  need  aquarium  chiller  drawing  to  explain  him.  If  somebody  can  share  please  do  the  needful.

 Wish  best  of  luck

Do  you  have  any  idea  on  what  is  the  method  used  in  the  usb  chiller?  I  doubt  if  you  would  be  able  to  cool  even  a  lt  of  water.  More  over  you  don't  have  a  temperature  controller  in  the  unit.  So  you  never  know  at  what  temperature  the  water  would  be  cooled.

Most  important,  are  you  sure  if  the  chiller  has  a  thermostat?  If  no  thermostat  is  available,  the  chiller  would  work  24/7!!!!!

You  can  modify  the  fridge  that  we  use  in  home  to  work  has  a  chiller.  The  fridge  does  not  work  24/7  since  it  works  on  thermostat.  The  compressor  would  be  working  till  the  set  temperature  is  attained.  Once  the  set  temperature  is  attained,  the  compressor  stops  working.  The  temperature  would  be  almost  constant  throughout.

You  can  also  modify  the  air  condition  unit  to  work  as  a  chiller.  The  basic  components  that  you  need  to  make  a  chiller  are:

 >  Compressor
 >  Thermostat  unit  (Digital  the  better)
 >  Condenser  unit
 >  Cooling  coil  (Titanium,  Copper,  Aluminum).   [Titanium  the  best  as  it  has  the  more  heat  exchange  capacity.  But  very  costly.  Copper  -  Can  be  used  but  not  good  for  tank  as  copper  could  react  with  the  aquarium  water  in  the  longer  run.  Aluminum  -  Very  cheap.  But  not  efficient.  Heat  exchange  capacity  is  at  the  lowest.  So  the  compressor  has  to  work  for  longer  time  to  cool  the  water.

More  to  explain..  Will  continue...  Will  also  post  some  pics  for  reference...

 Good  Initiative  Vicky

Have  a  look  at  this  for  drawings,  only  drawback  is  that  a  hole  is  made  in  the  tank
 http://www.novatecproducts.com/iceprobe_aquarium_chiller.htm

and  one  more  drawing  found  online  (but  could  be  related  to  a  product  itself)

 Dear  gentlemen
Been  there  done  that  and  failed  miserably

I  think  u  have  seen  some  posts  on  Singapore  forums  and  come  to  this  idea  and  be  rest  assured  that  you  will  waste  all  the  money  in  that  fridge.  As  there  is  something  in  heat  exchange  -  it's  not  that  simple.  It  will  work  only  if  your  water  volume  is  less  than  100  litres  or  so  as  these  fridge  compressor  capacity  is  damn  less.
I  went  one  step  further  to  use  a  freezer  running  SS  coils  for  chilling  and  even  that  didn't  turn  out  proper  and  efficient.

Hence  I  did  the  chiller  with  Air  conditioner  and  it  did  work  brilliantly.  Just  simply  connect  the  outdoor  unit  to  the  heat  exchanger  -  titanium  coils  which  I  had.  For  planted  can  do  with  copper.  But  still  it  was  not  efficient.

And  couple  of  days  back  did  a  revised  chiller  with  the  a  new  two  ton  outdoor  unit  with  expansion  valve  and  it  works  like  a  charm.

On  a  2000  litre  tank,  temp  went  from  31  to  25  in  just  45  minutes.

Kindly  don't  waste  your  money  in  the  fridge  concept.  if  you  still  insist  search  for  bean  animal  web  page  and  he  has  got  the  exact  details  as  to  why  it  will  not  work     .

The  air  conditioning  unit  with  titanium  coils  is  the  best  DIY  stuff  and  also  tried  and  tested  model.

Dont  waste  your  money  in  the  fridge  no  matter  how  many  stars  it  has  got!!!!

The  compressor  &  titanium  coils  are  the  expensive  items  of  a  DIY  chiller.  But  for  tanks  larger  than  1000  litres  it  is  the  best  option  rather  than  using  off-  the  -shelf  chillers.  The  compressor  cuts  off  once  the  preset  temp  is  achieved  and  for  that  your  thermostat  should  be  of  good  quality.  Even  for  off-  the  -  shelf  chillers  i  suggest  you  install  a  new  thremostat  rather  than  relying  on  the  built  in  thermostat.

If  you  are  planning  for  a  reef  set  up  forget  copper  coils.

PK  has  already  posted  his  DIY  chiller  and  please  dig  through  older  posts  on  the  same.

You  shall  have  more  information  on  DIY  chiller  and  its  advantages  if  you  go  through  PK's  thread  which  was  posted  almost  3  years  ago.

 @  Abhis,

Its  the  split  AC  unit  which  we  use  in  our  home.  Hence  it  has  the  temperature  controller.  You  can  set  the  temperature  according  to  your  choice.

buy  hailea  100a,  best  for  sall  tanks.  these  things  are  waste  of  time  and  money  because  ultimately  your  spending  the  same.  if  your  going  for  picos  and  tem  is  a  prob,  only  then  diy  chiller  is  ok.

These  are  not  raj  maharajas  equipments.

The  DIY  chiller  costs  about  70%  of  what  a  Artica  chiller  costs  for  that  specific  sized  tank
And  the  best  part  is  u  can  get  a  used  2nd  hand  Ac  and  fit  it  with
The  extras  and  complete  the  unit.  Plus  these  are  far  more  efficient  and  better  working  than  the  chillers  themselves.

Actually  Haelia  is  not  that  efficient  as  compared  to  Artica  or  teco  and  most  of  us  use  Haelia

The  best  part  it  these  DIYs  are  serviceable  unlike  the  chillers  where  u  need
To  run  from  pillar  to  post  to  service  them.

If  you  are  into  reef  and  got  a  sizeable  tank  then  DIYS  are
Better,  into  planted  then  ready  mades  are  better.

 @vicky70l

where  are  u  located  in  mumbai  ?
next  time  i  open  the  chiller  for  cleaning  will  call  u  come  and  check  whats  inside  chiller  and  why  diy  is  a  best  option  (same  components  used  in  ac  )  just  need  a  titanium  coil  and  a  thermostat

hailea/resun/boyu  chiller  parts  are  not  avilable  if  something  goes  wrong  then  the  unit  goes  for  toss  until  u  find  someone  who  can  repair  it  for  your

i  am  using  a  helia  100a  chiller  which  is  more  then  5  year  old  and  still  its  running  fine  without  any  problem

but  for  my  next  tank  i  am  going  for  a  diy  chiller  using  a  ac  unit
