 Hi  Guys,

I  am  totally  new  to  Marine  world.  Initially  i  want  to  start  with  a  tank  dimension  of  2x2x2.  My  question  is  for  this  tank  size

 *  do  sump  really  required  ?
 *  is  that  mandatory  that  i  should  put  T5  lights  ?

 Thanks,
 Kishore

 @fishparadise,

   1.  Sump  is  most  important  equipment  for  saltwater  hobby.

   2.  T5  is  not  mandatory  for  marine  tanks.  You  can  use  metal  or  led  lights  depend  on  what  you  want  to  keep  in  this  tank.

Please  share  your  plan  for  this  tank,  so  the  expert  can  help  you  better.

   Regards
 -Surajit

The  dimensions  u  mentioned  are  good.

Make  a  list  of  equipments  you  plan  on  using.  (skimmer,  pumps,  etc)

Also  decide  on  what  you  plan  to  keep  in  this  setup.

Thx  experts  for  a  quick  response.  Due  to  budget  constrains  i  am  not  able  to  go  for  a  bigger  tank,  even  though  i  learnt  that  nano  tanks  are  tough  to  keep.  Lets  keep  our  fingers  crossed  by  sticking  to  basic  thumb  rules.

I  was  told  that  more  bigger  the  sump  is  good  for  the  tank  is  it  true?

Mounded  imported  tank(2x2x2)  can  i  upgrade  this  tank  with  T5  lights
 Protein  Skimmer
Sump  already  i  own  a  tank  with  3x1/2x1/2  -  is  this  sufficient?
How  much  salt  i  need  to  mix  for  a  litre/gallons  of  water?
Since  its  a  small  tank  i  would  like  to  keep  small  fishes  like  clown  fish  and  any  other  compatible  tank  mates  for  this.
I  was  told  that  no  need  to  change  water  for  atleast  2  months.  This  is  after  complete  setup  with  fishes.  Is  that  true?
Earlier  i  had  Severums,  Flowerhorns,  Oscars  used  to  do  25%  weekly  WC.  Strange  to  hear  the  LFS  guys  statement.
Anybody  guess  the  size  of  this  tank  looking  more  than  2  feet  :-(
My  intention  is  to  go  for  a  setup  like  this  with  or  without  sand.  Any  suggestions  what  an  all  i  need  apart  from  my  list  like  test  kits  etc...

 Thanks  again  guys...

 Kishore

I  have  never  seen  a  marine  tank  in  my  life,  but  I  have  read  a  lot  &  can  say  that  the  tank  you  are  using  as  reference  is  pretty  tough!
And  keeping  invertebrates  like  anemone  is  at  the  top  of  difficulty  level.  For  your  first  marine  tank,  go  with  fish  only!
Experts  correct  me  if  I  am  wrong!

go  for  led  flood  lights.......  im  using  them  since  long  time  and  are  really  intense  so  you  can  hang  them.  if  u  have  2ft  height,  go  for  20w  (im  using  10w  because  my  height  is  just  15"  +  9"  from  water  surface,  corals  are  doing  good).  leds  are  best  as  you  dont  have  to  change  them  every  6  months  like  t5s  and  plls.  they  are  cheaper  in  long  run.  will  last  for  3  yrs  minimum.  go  for  blue  white  50/50.

If  you  have  budget  constraints,  I  would  recommend  you  dont  start  a  marine  tank,  if  you  are  looking  to  do  something  like  that  picture.

Thanks  guys  for  your  valuable  suggestions.  My  intention  is  to  buy  an  imported  tank  shown  in  the  pic  preferable  the  top  is  fully  closed  with  lights.  If  that  is  the  case  how  do  i  keep  my  sump  water  flow  into  the  tank.   What  sort  of  modifications  do  i  need  to  make  with  the  tank.

If  you  buy  a  imported  molded  tank  for  marine  use  it  will  come  pre  drilled  with  overflow  box  built  in  for  use  with  sump  filteration..most  small  imported  molded  tank  that  I've  seen  with  a  cover  are  fitted  with  a  overhead  filter  which  is  usless  for  marine  tanks.

 reagrds,
 Marc.

if  u  going  for  ready  made,  go  for  boyu  with  backsump,  and  dont  forget  to  add  a  chiller......  i  would  advise  removing  the  lid  so  that  there  is  good  gas  and  heat  exchange.  hang  a  light  above  the  tank...

If  your  going  for  an  imported  all  in  one  tank  and  planing  to  keep  livestock  like  the  ones  in  the  pics,  forget  about  it.  A  tank  of  that  size  with  good  equipments  can  be  very  expensive.  I  suggest  u  stick  with  a  pair  of  clowns  and  maybe  a  damsel.

If  u  make  a  tank  (not  the  imported  mouleded  ones)  with  a  sum,  it  will  give  u  a  lot  of  flexibility  to  upgrageur  equipments  later  on  incase  u  was  to  keep  corals  or  other  marine  inverts.

Another  big  Disadvantage  of  All  in  One  tank  is  there  is  very  little  scope  of  adding  new  equipment

@fishparadise  Being  a  starter  in  marine  I  would  first  recommend  you  to  really  think  of  what  sort  of  setup  you  want  to  go  for  .  As  in  a  Fish  Only  ,  Fish  Only  with  Live  Rock  or  Reef  Tank  (the  One  In  the  pic).

As  that  will  help  you  decide  the  size  of  the  tank  and  other  things  .
Going  from  the  basic  You  can  go  with  a  good  canister(Bio  and  Mechanical  )  like  2227  for  tank  with  Fish  with  live  rock  .
Skimmer  is  must  in  any  setup
Lighting  goes  as  per  your  setup
FishOnly  setup  can  have  basic  lights
Fish  with  Live  rocks  needs  more  Blue  and  white  combination
 Reef  need  High  Lighting  with
You  need  wave  makers  for  water  flow
SUMP  is  recommended  since  this  part  can  take  on  all  your  equipments   and  filtration.  More  over  it  helps  in  increasing  the  water  volume  of  the  setup  which  is  usefull  in  maintaining  the  tank  .
Test  Kits  like  (Ph,  Gh,  Salanity  ,  Amonia  ,  Nitrate  and  Nitrite  )  are  must  to  have  .

I  would  recommend  to  read  more  about  the  setup  all  across  the  internet  to  get  the  better  understanding  .

 thanks
 Suneesh

Firstly  and  foremost  important,  starting,  keeping,  and  maintaining  a  marine  is  not  cheap!
think  about  your  budget  constraints  first  and  then  enter  into  the  saltwater  hobby.
You  might  atleast  need  10k  or  more  for  what  u  have  mention,  ifu  want  to  start  from  scratch.
