Cool  thanks..  for  saving  the  betta.  A  betta  can  be  kept  in  a  bigger  tank  with  less  water  movement.   I  am  really  sensitive  about  bettas.
Ok  go  for  vermicompost  in  the  bottom  level.  But  not  too  much. Then  river  sand  to  give  it  a  height.  And  the  top  layer  can  be  ada.
wash  the  river  sand  with  hot  water  or  fry  it  in  microwave  before  adding  in  your  tank.

Go  in  for  regular  construction.
Sieve  it  twice  to  get  particle  size  between  2-4  mm.
Put  a  thin  layer  of  regular  garden  soil  at  the  bottom.

Wash  it  thoroughly,  give  it  acid  treatment,  if  you  can,  this  will  convert  all  carbonate  particles  to  inert  form,  also  it  will  kill  all  snail  eggs  which  often  becomes  a  problem.

I  am  not  talking  about  axid  to  test  inertness  of  acid,  I  am  talking  about  using  hcl  treatment  of  river  sand.
It  is  a  bulletproof  method  for  killing  snail  eggs  in  river  sand.
