Hi  new  Here,  Glad  to  be  part  of  this  community   Cheer

Today  i  was  hanging  out  at  crowford  market  &  having  look  at  different  fish  species  for  my  aquarium.  While  so  i  heard  some  people  gossiping-"In  Kurla  we  could  have  got  better  &  cheap  deal"
so  i'm  just  wondering  if  there's  any  wholesale  market  for  pets/fishes  in  kurla.

I  checked  out  LFS  Mumbai  list  but  there's  only  one  shop-  Fish  O  Fish  Aquarium

if  any  body  knows  it  pls  care  to  share  the  details  &  if  possible  the  retailer  names  too.
 Any  of  following  suggested?-
 http://www.justdial.com/Mumbai/aquarium-fish-wholesalers-%3Cnear%3E-kurla

This  won't  specific  fish  related  visit  but  to  get  feel  &  idea  of  overall  market.

Ya  you  will  also  get  ATTITUDE  in  whole  sale,  even  if  there  are  no  customers,  the  shop  owner  is  busy  and  will  show  tremendous  attitude.  Wear  poor  peoples  clothes  because  if  you  go  there  well  dressed,  they  will  add  atleast  5bucks  more  to  every  item.  Their  tanks  are  worth  seeing,  there  will  be  water  everywhere  and  dirty  smelling  of  fish  poo.  Accessories  shop  is  fantastic,  but  if  more  that  2  people  are  waiting,  its  crowded  place  Crying or Very sad  .  If  you  ask  a  posh  shop  to  just  show  a  pumps  specs,  they  will  say  ARE  YOU  BUYIN?  if  not  then  just  see  and  walk  away.  that  is  all  about  KURLA-

Do  visit  1  shop  Fish  O  Fish,  the  guy  is  a  good  man,  the  shop  is  a  little  away  from  the  main  market.  and  the  place  is  DECENT  Thumb Up

 +1  on  Fish  O  Fish.

I  would  say  its  better  than  decent.  Setup  is  very  well  planned  and  kept.  Way  better  than  his  old  poky  place.
He  is  primarily  a  wholesaler  rather  than  retail  so  you  could  browse  around  without  expecting  to  be  followed  and  asked  if  you  are  going  to  buy  anything.

 Regards,
 Venkat

Kurla  is  a  wholesale  market  ,  suppose  to  be  for  LFS/retailers,  a  hobbyist  requiring  1or  2  fishes  will  obviously  be  not  entertained.
there  are  certain  shops  there  which  are  in  retail  trade  and  they  quote  retail  price  nothing  wrong  in  it.
further  it  is  not  advisable  for  hobbyist  to  buy  from  WS  shops  as  it  is  difficult  to  manage  transport  stressed  out  fish.not  all  hobbyist  will  have  certain  infrastructure  to  handle  this  kind  of  stress,  not  that  the  LFS  guys  are  equiped  with  the  same  but  they  average  out  the  cost  of  dead  fish  by  quoting  adjusted  price  and  a  hobbyist  gets  survived  fish  and  can  choose  healthy  ones  unlike   WS  shop.  Kurla  markets  gets  fishes  from  Chennai/Kolkata  and  some  other  places,  fishes  spend  couple  of  hours  in  cargo  and  ten  hours  in  bags  total.
Kurla  is  good  for  Arowanas  as  they  are  quite  expensive  at  LFS.
Sands  and  gravels  are  quit  cheap
some  one  looking  to  stocking  a  medium  size  planted  aquaria  with  tetras  and  guppies  then  it  is  an  ideal  place  but  quariantine  is  must  and  should  but  10%  more  than  the  required  quantity.
 Lakeland  stock  few  natives.

Persy  being  a  busy  wholesale  shop  avoiding  dry  floors  is  difficult  not  to  mention  those  dead  fish  we  jam  under  our  boots  while  entering   Chuckle
cats  make  good  feast  out  there   Chuckle

A  place  to  visit  I  must  say  Thumb Up  especially  by  following  garothmaan  cloth  tip.  These  guys  have  their  monopoly  in  their  respective  areas  so  they  will  show  so  called  ATTITUDE,  same  thing  at  Crowford,  Manish  Market  fortunately  didn't  got  such  experience  at  heera  panna.
carrying  fishes  can  be  the  issue  as  i  don't  have  any  vehicle  but  price  difference  is  too  much?  for  me  nearby  shop  is-  in  front  of  Sujata  Hotel,  Dadar  behind  Bus  Stop(many  must  be  knowing  him).  He's  doing  business  since  25yrs(may  be  more).  I  will  check  out  quotes  &  update  here

Next  week  is  Ganpati  so  will  plan  out  visit  next  to  next  week,  i'll  bump  again  when  i  decide  to  go  &  it  will  be  great  if  any  one  would  like  to  accompany  me.

First  try  and  understand  why  the  wholesalers  at  Kurla  give  ‘attitude.’  Kurla  is  a  wholesale  market  from  where  shops  from  all  over  Bombay  buy  their  goods  and  livestock.  They  buy  in  bulk  so  their  rates  are  significantly  lower.  The  wholesalers  get  irritated  when  a  hobbyist  (like  the  one  who  thinks  they  give  attitude)  comes  along  looking  for  one  or  two  goldfish  which  is  why  they  quote  higher  prices  to  discourage  such  petty  sales.  They  are  not  into  customer  service,  they  are  looking  to  sell  in  bulk.  They  are  doing  business,  not  charity.  Buy  in  bulk  and  you  will  not  get  any  attitude.  They  will  happily  sell  to  you  if  you  buy  a  minimum  of  a  dozen  of  something.  There  are  lots  of  hobbyists  in  Mumbai  who  buy  in  bulk.  Reach  out  to  them  and  you  can  buy  livestock  from  Kurla  together.

If  you’re  looking  for  ‘pairs’  of  fish  you’re  better  off  at  any  retail  local  shop.

A  Customer  is  a  Customer  afterall,  how  can  anyone  judge  if  he  is  going  to  buy  a  single  Fish  or  buy  a  dozen?  By  looking  at  their  face?

I  have  been  in  a  shop  and  only  asked  1  single  question  "Which  fish  is  this",  they  simply  ignored,  why  so?  "Attitude  "

 Hi  Garothmaan

I  agree  with  Sid  here  and  I  dont  think  this  is  restricted  to  fish  wholesalers.  Its  true  of  any  wholesale  business
Wholesalers  do  not  usually  deal  with  walk  in  customers.  They  know  their  regulars  and  thats  where  their  business  comes  from.  Retail  customers  are  at  best  tolerated.  Fish  O  fish  used  to  deal  out  of  a  poky  little  shop  where  all  business  is  done  over  the  phone  and  the  "Customers"  only  show  up  to  pick  up  what  they  ordered.

My  LFS  buys  from  FishO  Fish  (He  is  also  his  Brother  in  law  )  and  I  buy  stuff  from  him  when  I  need  1  piece  and  go  to  Kishore  when  I  need  largere  quantity  or  more  expensive  stuff.

Its  not  fair  to  assume  that  they  have  the  same  customer  service  attitude  as  a  retail  store.  We  want  to  deal  with  them  because  they  give  lower  prices  and  the  price  is  a  result  of  their  bulk  dealings  which  does  not  come  from  retail  customers  so  we  are  lower  on  their  priority  list.

If  we  choose  to  go  to  a  wholesale  shop,  we  must  have  patience  till  they  come  around  to  deal  with  us.  There  is  no  real  need  to  go  there.  You  could  go  to  Nautilus  or  your  friendly  LFS  where  you  would  pay  a  little  more  but  they  would  deal  with  you  with  the  "right"  attitude.

No  flames  please,  this  is  just  my  opinion.

 Regards,
 Venkat

Hi  Garothmaan

I  agree  with  Sid  here  and  I  dont  think  this  is  restricted  to  fish  wholesalers.  Its  true  of  any  wholesale  business
Wholesalers  do  not  usually  deal  with  walk  in  customers.  They  know  their  regulars  and  thats  where  their  business  comes  from.  Retail  customers  are  at  best  tolerated

We  want  to  deal  with  them  because  they  give  lower  prices  and  the  price  is  a  result  of  their  bulk  dealings  which  does  not  come  from  retail  customers  so  we  are  lower  on  their  priority  list.

May  be.  Nothing  offensive  though,  if  the  shop  keeper  has  put  things  on  display,  that  doesnot  mean  he  wants  to  sell..?  right...?

Let  me  try  again  next  time,  and  next  time  I  will  take  with  me  an  LFS  bulk  buyer,  lets  see.

I  may  be  wrong,  because  there  is  a  majority  here  who  have  accepted  their  "ATTITUDE"  as  business  practice  Chuckle  .

The  first  time,  I  had  been  there,  we  had  bought  those  sharks  Very Happy  ,  believe  me  "then",  (that  day)  the  purchase  was  more  than  a  dozen  Chuckle,  on  the  same  day  50pcs  Shubukins  and  12  angels.

It  was  that  day  and  this  day-  I  have  seen  no  change.   Chuckle  may  be  they  dont  like  my  face  ROFL

chalo  theek  hai  bhai-  god  is  great-
