Dear Friends,
I'am looking to venture into marine aquarium..I have had freshwater planted tanks for about a year and now wanted to understand exactly about a simple marine setup...Here is what I want at the end..
1. Looking to keep a pair of percula clown fish..So can you guys please let me know the advisable requirements I need to have for this setup... ( pls suggest min tank size which is advisable also)...
2. What is the approx estimate I need to keep in mind for this complete simple setup ..
3. Is there anything I need to watch out for in a marine setup based on what freshers like me might initially experience..
Pls Pm me or you can reply on this itself with your opinions..
Thanks and looking forward for your help.. |

hello dude
there is 1 thing about starting a marine tank is it is very expensive
and what i have heard from other guys is you need to keep a min 3ft tank
with a sump filter in which u will have to keep 2 tanks 1 for the fish and the other is the filter
kindly check the web for marine tank sump filters
and u will have to keep a close check on the Ph, Nitrate, Salinity levels
to tell u the truth do a lot of R&D on the web and go feet first and not head on
BTY best of luck dude
and please don't think that i am letting u down |

one thing that you cant avoid for marines, is reading. Read Read and Read more, gather lots of information on the stuff that you want to start with and new questions will pop up. so again comes reading, there are 100's of good sites and forum including this one who has good stuff for marine beginners. Do lots of R&D
second most important thing is patience... i am in process of making my marine and since 3 months working on it (now i am frustrated, but cant start it without cycling)... and feels so this process will tank some more 2-3 months for me to introduce the fishes
Marine is expensive, soo dont be it an impulsive buy/decision just think before you take a step. if you dont have proper savings/funding dont buy rather save and proceed step by step but only with quality equipments.
minimum tank depends on your budget, if your final goal is to house a pair of clown than i think 2.5-3 feet should be good enough with a good and powerful canister filter, but bigger the better and tank with the sump for marine is the ultimate choice. nothing comes in that comparison.
lastly just READ and Research, dont rush, cycle the tank properly with proper equipment, and then introduce the fish.
cheers all the best with your venture. |

Hi,
As long as you do your basic research, it is not as difficult as it is often made out to be. especially for lightly stocked fish only tanks.
Yes, it is more challenging than fresh water as the inhabitants are less forgiving.
Larger tanks have more volume of water and water parameters change slower giving you more time to react so pick the largest size you can manage.
sump is not mandatory. it helps as it adds water volume and can hide equipment.
Coming to the expense bit, its a bottomless pit but restricting your desires can make it quite affordable. it actually starts to get expensive because it never stops at "just a pair of clowns" :-)
at a minimum apart from a lot of patience, you will need a tank, a good skimmer, a little live rock, test kits, salt and a hydrometer/ refractometer. Check out the prices online for an estimated cost. Talk to your local hobbyists for recommendations on equipment and stuff.
And again, its not difficult just needs more patience and reading.
All the best. |

@ Jaival - I dont think a cannister filter is advisable for a marine tank as it is a potential nitrate factory. A sump which can be exposed to some lighting is advisable. Please consider removing the cannister unless you are particular about it. |

i believe the same and never use canister in marines... but as a matter of fact i have seen people with very low stock and have successfully maintained the tank with canisters.... |

Give yourself 2-3 months to read and gain knowledge from other people/websites and also to do research on the products you will need as well as availability and also to calculate budget and costs before you even purchase the tank |

1) Go for the largest tank possible.
2) Buy a refractometer (dont buy hydrometer they are faulty)
3) Buy a good protein skimmer and a boyu or sobo or hydor wave maker pump
4) Buy lighting (LED is the best, go for led flood lights)
5) Buy Redsea Salt
6) Buy Live Rock and aragonite or crushed coral sand
7) Keep salinity at 1.024
Buy Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate test kits
9) Once rocks, substrate are added, let the tank cycle for 25days with good water movement (20-30times the tank water volume)
10)Check for ammo, ni and na. ammo should be 0, ni 0 and na below 25.
11) add 2 chromis, then see, after 2 weeks add clowns...... |
