Hi,
I was given 3-4 small Java fern rhizomes by a fellow hobbyist which I have tied to driftwood with the help of fishing line. All of them had a couple of leaves attached to them when I got them. I have them for more than 8-9 months now. Numerous plantlets have sprouted from these old leaves and even the rhizomes have grown but not even a single new leaf has come out since I have these ferns. 2 rhizomes have been placed in such a way that water constantly flows over them and the other 2 are placed in such a way that they are not under direct light.
I am providing about 2 WPG to the plants. Photo period is about 6-8 hours per day.
I have started dosing Macros and Micros about 2-3 months ago
I am not supplying any CO2.
Can any of you please let me know what I could be doing wrong?
Thanks,
Amit |

@Sripad, the plants are from his plant and were not grown emersed. I dont think the co2 was high.
@Salil, I have tied them just to make them stay on the driftwood..not tight at all. There are no roots on the rhizomes. |

Is there no solution to get rid of this problem? |

I have uploaded a pic of my tank here:

The rhizome is marked in red.

Trim old leaves to get new leaves to grow. Excel or co2 with nutrients will give faster growth.

1. Trim old leaves (do not trim all of it but trim 80% of the older and bad looking leaves). the energy to sustain the leaves will go to strengthening the rhizome and producing new leaves.
2. Direct the water flow towards the rhizome or atleast keep them where there is water flow.
3. CO2 injection is neccesary along with the dosing ferts. |

Wish i had that needle java fern that does well when the 'normal' java fern does not... Can we exchange it for something that you might want?
In my water, no java fern does well without CO2, if this neelde java fern works, i will be so happy. |
