 Hi  All  ,
I  am  planning  a  8  Ft  *2.5  Ft  *  2  Ft  Cemented  tank  for  my  South  American  Cichlids.
I  need  suggestions  /positive/negative  comments  on  any  ideas  that  I  have  concieved  on  my  own.
Also  please  answer  some  of  my  questions.

 1)  Cemented  tank
 2)  Glass  only  in  the  front.     Back  ,  Sides  ,  and  Bottom  to  be  of  Cement.
       Please  suggest  Glass  thickness.
What  is  toughened  glass  and  advantages  ?  Do  you  have  anything  called  Extra  clear  glass.
 3)  I  am  planning  to  make  this  on  the  terrace  ,  it  would  be  a  foot  high  from  the  ground,  touching  a  wall  at  the  back.
I  am  planning  to  provide  a  L  shaped  angle  and  place  tiles  on  the  top  ,  to  prevent  the  sun  directly  hitting  the  aquarium.
Sunlight  on  that  side  falls  from  morning  6  AM  to  12  Pm,  post  that  the  sun  moves  west  side  and  starts  going  behind  the  wall
During  bangalore  summers  ,  can  the  fishes  sustain  the  heat  ?
 4)  Inside  of  the  tank  ,  i  am  planning  to  provide  tiles  on  the  cemented  sides  ,back  and  bottom.
What  tiles  are  better  ,  swimming  pool  tiles  or  regular  tiles  used  for  house  flooring  ,  rough  or  smooth  ?
 5)  Am  i  going  to  face  serious  algae  issues  ,  because  of  sunlight  ?  I  will  drop  a  tarpaulin  from  the  front  ,  hanging  from  the  tiles.

Anything  else  that  you  all  think  about  ,  that  I  have  missed?
 Thanks  in  advance.

Oh  that  will  be  great.  Post  pictures  as  it  progress.
Use  smooth  tiles.  It  will  be  easy  to  clean.  Blue  or  green  tile,  it  will  be  good  for  them.  Good  luck  And  call  us  for  a  visit.

 Hi  Vinod,
since  its  a  DIY  tank  the  ideal  filteration  IMHO  will  a  sump  filter  with  the  plumbing  inlet  &  oulets  intergrated  with  the  cement  bottom  or  sides  .....the  sump  also  can  be  made  from  cement...and  for  tanks  this  big  this  is  the  best  option.....while  your  at  it  do  consider  a  3D  background  &  sides  instead  of  a  smooth  finish  and  sticking  tiles  on  that  it  will  look  much  better...as  for  the  glass..extra  clear  float  glass  is  available  localy  but  its  not  cheap  ,plz  do  consider  bracing  the  front  glass  since  it  8ft  long  and  2  ft  deep....my  2bits  Very Happy

Wow  monster  tanks  are  always  good,

Regarding  the  Algae  issue  you  had  in  mind,  you  will  end  up  with  green  alage,  you  will  need  to  limit  the  light  time  if  you  want  to  avoid  this,  i  have  done  couple  experiments  on  this  in  my  terrace  .  even  a  shade  sometimes  dont  work  since  the  front  is  gonna  be  totaly  open  glass  ,  you  will  also  have  to  regularly  scrape  the  algae  on  front  glass,  remember  one  day  you  forget  to  pull  the  taraulin  ,  it  will  start  off  green  water  (since  its  not  going  to  be  heavily  planted).

My  terrace  tubs  takes  longer  time  to  get  green  algae  if  left  uncovered  4-5  days.
but  when  ever  i  kept  tanks  in  shade  with  one  side  open  1-2  day  was  enough  for  greenish  water  to  start.

Please  dont  take  the  above  points  to  be  de-motivational,  just  keep  them  in  mind  since  i  had   experienced  these  issues  when  i  wanted  to  use  my  terrace  space  ,  so  just  wanted  to  share  with  you.

All  the  best  .  Awaiting  pics.

 Regards
 Asif

Foot  high  from  the  ground  -  Don't  you  think  thats  a  bit  low.  You  will  have  to  bend  down  to  see  the  fishes.
Would't  it  be  better  to  raise  at  least  3  ft  above  ground?????

Also,  I  am  a  bit  sceptical  about  naturally  lit  tanks.  They  might  be  good  for  fishes  but  is  that  aesthetically  good?.(Its  a  personal  choice  anyway,  so  don't  bother,  but  just  in  case  you  haven't  thought  about  it.

Finally,  is  it  safe  from  rain/birds  and  expansion  in  cement  walls?
