To  cut  down  the  light  and  prevent  algae  you  get  green  cloth  type  netting  at  nurseries  that  you  can  use  for  this  purpose

Foot  high  from  the  ground  -  Don't  you  think  thats  a  bit  low.  You  will  have  to  bend  down  to  see  the  fishes.
Would't  it  be  better  to  raise  at  least  3  ft  above  ground?????

Also,  I  am  a  bit  sceptical  about  naturally  lit  tanks.  They  might  be  good  for  fishes  but  is  that  aesthetically  good?.(Its  a  personal  choice  anyway,  so  don't  bother,  but  just  in  case  you  haven't  thought  about  it.

Finally,  is  it  safe  from  rain/birds  and  expansion  in  cement  walls?

YEs,  per  you  I  will  put  it  couple  of  feet  high  from  the  ground.  Thanks.
Hmmm,  Aesthetically  I  expect  it  to  be  nice...not  sure...but  willing  to  go  that  extra  mile  for  the  joy  of  fishes.
For  the  rain/birds,  first  I  will  have  a  cover  on  the  tank  ,  second  I  have  planned  a  L  angle  with  tiles  on  the  top  to  prevent  direct  sunlight  and  rain,.
Expansion  should  not  be  of  big  problem  ,  since  we  have  watertanks  at  home  more  than  20  yrs  without  any  problem.  Let  m  eknow  if  I  am  wrong  on  this.

Regarding  expansion,  your  tank  is  kept  outside  and  when  the  cement  gets  hot,  it  starts  expanding.  Glass  being  brittle  is  an  easy  target  point.  An  all  glass  tank  will  have  no  problems  as  it  is  homogenous.  Cement  and  glass  boundaries!!!!  I  am  a  bit  skeptical  on  whether  that's  gonna  withstand...  Not  sure  about  it  though.  Might  be  someone  who  has  done  that  earlier  and  done  it  outdoors  can  comment  more.  Logically,  the  cement  would  expand  during  the  day  and  crack  the  glass  when  hot....  Its  the  glass-cement  boundary  that  might  get  affected.Normally  glass  -cement  boundaries  are  insulated  with  wood  which  is  elastic   but  definitely  not  possible  in  a  wet  environment  like  a  tank....  Someone  who  has  done  this  earlier,  please  comment...  I  may  be  wrong  completely...

I  don't  know  how  many  of  you  have  noticed  that  the  person  who  set  up  this  tank  is  paralyzed  waist  down.
It  is  a  difficult  task  even  for  a  normal  person  and  indeed  it  shows  his  dedication  to  his  fish.
Things  are  changing  in  India  but  as  with  everything  it  takes  time.

What  about  using  clear  acrylic  instead  of  glass  ?

This  is  my  Worry  for  clear  Acrylic.
 Expansion  and  Contraction:
Cast  acrylic  sheet  responds  to  temperature  changes  by  expanding  or  contracting  at  a  far  greater  rate  than  glass

If  you  getting  sunlight,  go  for  a  big  ATS  "algae  turf  scrubber"  it  will  help  eliminating  algae  in  the  main  tank  and  also  keep  ammonia  levels  in  check.....

have  you  considered  a  All  glass  tank.  that  could  be  easier  to  build  and  you  dont  have  to  worry  about  the  leaks.

Also  make  sure  your  tank  is  not  exposed  to  direct  sunlight  for  a  very  long  period,  because  now  Bangalore  summer  touches  38  Degree.

 Good  Luck

YEs  Deepak...did  consider  that  ...but  sunlight  was  one  of  the  major  reasons  to  drop  curtains  on  them.
I  got  an  expert  on  water  proofing  who  is  working  on  this  and  we  are  in  the  initial  stages  of  discussions.
