PostPosted: Fri Oct 19, 2012 11:17 pm Post subject: My first betta Reply with quote

 Hi  guys
Bought  home  a  betta  5  days  back.  He  was  kept  by  the  lfs  in  a  community  tank  where  his  fins  were  nipped  according  to  the  lfs.  He  was  kept  in  a  small  container  and  looked  in  a  bad  shape  but  anyways  I  brought  him  home  and  put  him  in  a  7g  1ftx1ftx1ft  tank.  He  has  improved  a  lot  in  these  five  days  and  seems  comfortable  now.  I  have  a  couple  of  questions:
1-  I  tried  pellets  but  he  doesnt  like  them.  He  eats  mosquitoes  and  blood  worms  only.  What  other  things  can  I  try?
2-  Attaching  a  photo  here,  is  anything  wrong  with  the  colour  of  the  body?  The  colour  of  the  fins  is  bright  but  the  body  seems  lighter  in  colour.  It  was  a  bit  darker  on  the  first  day  I  think.  any  tips  to  bring  out  the  colour?
3-  With  my  limited  knowledge  I  think  it  is  a  crowntail.  Is  it  right?
4-  Any  other  tips  to  keep  it  healthy???
 Thank  you.

What  pellets  are  you  feeding?  Use  hikari.  Avoid  dry  worms.  Feed  dry  worms  once  a  week.  But  clean  the  live  worms  several  times  before  feeding.

Finally!  Congrats!  Keep  your  aquarium  clean  and  maintain  the  temp  at  27-28  degrees  like  the  people  above  mentioned.  He  looks  like  he  needs  some  shade,  so  put  in  some  plants.  Do  regular  WC  at  2  times  a  week  and  condition  the  water

hikari  is  the  best  one,   but  seems  the  betta  is  not  in  a  good  health.  some  questions:

 is  it  flaring  properly?
 eating  normally  or  very  less?

Please  dont  mind  ,  I  feel  the  betta  is  suffering  from  Clamped  fin  (Sticky  fin)  problem.  As  out  of  my  24  bettas  ,  5  ware  suffering  with  the  problem  ,  So  by  seeing  the  pic  I  felt  it  is  not  able  to  flair  properly  and  almost  looked  like  my  effected  betta  .  if  in  that  case

 my  suggestions  :

 1.  If  possible  keep  a  small  sponge  filter  ,  which  will  help  in  cleaning  the  water  .
 2.  Try  giving  hikari  betta  bio  gold  or  any  other  food,  If  not  eating  check  with  experts  advice.
 3.   siphon  all  the  waste  from  the  tank  every  day  to  keep  the  water  in  good  condition.
 4.  If  possible  do  a  water  change  of  20%  every  two/three  day  for  some  time.
 5.  Put  some  Alomd  leaves.

Can  you  upload  a  pic  of  the  betta  with  flaring  ?  just  want  to  make  sure  it  is  not  suffering  from  clamped  fin  problem.

Thanks  Pranoy  and  Deepak  for  your  replies.
I  feed  dry  blood  worms  by  Aquafin  and  surely  try  dry  tubifex  worms.  Don't  remember  the  brand  of  the  pellets  but  they  were  cheap.
Searched  but  couldn't  find  live  worms  at  any  lfs.
How  many  watts  heater  will  be  needed  in  a  7g  tank?
What  about  the  colour?  Will  the  finnage  increase?

 Thanks  girlcookart  and  Satyanarayan.
The  tank  has  a  sponge  filter  and  is  bare  bottom  right  now.  Planning  on  planting  it  this  weekend.  I  am  doing  about  25-30%  water  changes  everyday  since  it  wasn't  cycled.  I  read  that  bettas  r  hardy  fish  and  its  ok  to  put  one  without  cycling.  While  doing  wc  I  siphon  out  the  waste  everyday.
Satyanarayan,  it  doesn't  flare  much  even  in  front  of  a  mirror.  Sometimes  he  flares,  sometimes  he  doesn't.  What  is  the  cure  for  clamped  fin  problem?

Clamped  fins  is  some  times  caused  by  velvet.  Keep  changing  water.  Add  a  little  rock  salt.  Add  almond  leaf  as  Satya  suggested.  The  heater  should  be  on  28  degree.  Don't  feed  him  dry  worms.  Add  a

Hi  Shreyas!  Congratulations  on  your  first  betta.
I  agree  with  Satyanarayan,  it  definitely  doesnt  look  in  good  shape.
As  for  the  food,  live  mosquitoes,  freeze  dried  bloodworms  is  what  I  am  feeding  my  betta  presently,  for  lack  of  other  options.  See  if  you  can  get  your  hands  on  some  hikari  betta  bio  gold.  You  could  try  culturing  mosquito  larvae  too.
Further,  a  heater  would  be  a  good  addition,  set  around  28  degrees.

 All  the  Best!

I  am  from  nagpur,  and  read  that  you  are  currently  in  Amravati.  Your  betta  keeping  skills  are  legendary   Smile  I  would  love  to  see  your  bettas  whenever  I  come  to  Amravati.

Thanks  to  your  help,  my  betta  is  better  and  seems  healthy  now.  Special  thanks  to  deepakg  without  whom  I  dont  think  the  fish  could  have  survived.  Now  the  tank  has  a  heater,  sponge  filter,  almond  leaf,  driftwood  and  thinking  of  planting  when  my  exams  are  over.  Posting  some  pics.
The  fish  wasn't  posing  well  for  the  camera.  whenever  I  brought  my  mobile  close,  it  would  come  so  close  to  it  that  I  couldn't  take  a  good  pic.  After  an  hours  work  and  having  my  fingerprints  all  over  the  glass,  I  got  some  pics.   Very Happy

Hey  ,  It  looks  better  now  and  just  continue  as  Deepak  and  other  members  suggested  you  .  You  will  see  it  will  flair  far  batter  then  this.  I  have  the  same  color  and  type  of  betta  too.  Smile  As  I  feed  my  bettas  only  hikari  betta  bio  gold,  I  don't  have  much  idea  about  this  food.  Any  way  congrats  your  betta  is  doing  very  good.   Thumb Up
