generally  we  use  river  sand  as  top  up  for  planted  tank,  as  its  inert  so  you  will  NOT  be  able  grow  maximum  plants.

Best  is  to  use  some  fertile  substrate  then  river  sand  as  top  up.  Again  if  you  use  commercial  substrate  you  dont  need  river  sand.

It  depends  on  the  plants  you  are  planning  to  have,  if  you  are  going  for  only  ferns  and  moss  you  can  go  for  any  substrate  as  these  plants  does  not  take  nutrients  from  the  substrate.  In  this  case  you  need  to  add  liquid  fertilizers  on  regular  basis.
If  you  are  going  for  plants  with  roots  then  you  need  have  fertilizers  beneath  the  river  sand,  and  beware  the  sand  granules  should  be  large  enough  for  proper  circulations.  Fine  sand  prevents  root  from  further  penetration  and  also  fine  sand  will  make  your  bed  compact  which  will  lead  to  plants  dying  off  after  sometime.
Else  do  planting  in  pots  with  fertilizer  and  place  them  in  the  river  sand…

 Thanks  friends  for  detailed  reply.

Where  can  I  get  the  fertile  substrate  or  a  commercial  substrate  in  mumbai.  I  have  tried  in  Kurla  market  but  unable  to  source  it.
Actualy  I  am  beginner  in  planted  tank  hobby  and  would  like  to  keep  some  hardy  plants  which  can  grow  with  DIY  CO2  set  up  and  substrate  which  is  easily  available.

I  am  also  doing  some  online  research  about  planted  tank  but  need  guidance  from  IAH  experts.

 Regards,
 Sameer

I  have  used  only  river  sand  from  the  begining.  I  had  guppies/  goldfishes  in  the  tank.  At  that  time  i  was  having  only  crypts,  some  type  of  echinodorous(big  plants  like  amazon  swords)  some  ferns.  Since  i  was  a  begginer  i  tried  some  mosses  and  smaller  leaves  plant  like  rotala,  hm,  glosso  etc  but  my  gold  fishes  used  to  eat  them.  One  day  i  came  accross  nature  style  aquarium,  and  wanted  to  create  one.  I  sold  my  gold  fishes  and  added  many  plants.   but  their  growth  was  limited.  Then  started  reading  about  their  demands  to  thrive.  Buided  an  diy  co2  system,  added  liquid  fertilizer.  It  got  some  weeks  to  get  the  approximate  dosage  of  fertilizer.  Got  lot  of  algae  problem.  After  few  weeks  the  tank  got  stable,  after  few  weeks  the  tank  was  fulled  with  plants.  Have  to  trim  the  stem  plants  for  a  week.  Got  irritated  by  weekly  trimming.  Removed  many  plants  like  rotala,  HM,  pygmy  chain  sword.  Hydrocotyle  sibthoripoides,  valasneria  nana,  marselia  hirsuta.  Cryptocornes,  amazon  swords.
I  had  even  a  good  carpet  with  glossostigma,  Marselia  hirsuta.  But  i  didn't  got  growth  of  hair  grass,  H  cuba,  utricularia  graminifolia.
You  can  go  for  just  river  sand  with  ferns,  mosses  and  most  of  the  stem  plants  but  you  have  to  regularly  dose  fertilizer.  If  you  want  a  grow  plants  like  H  cuba,  hairgrass,  utricularia  graminifolia  etc  go  for  branded  substrate.

 Hey  Sameer,

Even  i  am  a  beginner  in  planted  tanks.  I  started  mine  around  2  months  back  with  red  river  sand  +  cocopeat  as  substrate.   Currently  I  have  Water  wisteria,  Compacta,  Polysperma  and  Dwarf  Saggittaria  in  my  tank.  All  of  them  seem  to  be  thriving  since  these  are  said  to  be  beginner's  plants.

 regards,
 pankaj

 Thanks  Bhim,  Pankaj,  Sripad,  Garothmaan,

@Garothmaan:-  I  am  closely  reading  your  post  about  maintaining  Anubias  and  inspired  to  start  my  own  planted  tank.  Due  to  busy  schedule  I  couldn't  carry  river  sand  this  time  but  in  next  visit  I'll  try  to  get  atleast  some  kgs  if  not  tons.I'll  try  my  level  best  to  attend  MAM  meet.

@Sripad:-  Can  you  guide  me  about  the  availability  of  river  sand  (laterite)  here  in  Mumbai,  it's  price  etc.

 Thanks  again,

 Regards,
 Sameer

Mostly  it's  not  available  at  LFS,  you  need  to  source  it  from  Nature
