Hey  everybody!  finally  im  getting  a  bigger  tank..im  getting  a  goood  deal  on  a  36  *  12  *  18  tank  at  my  LFS.  so  thinking  of  getting  it..cant  decide  how  to  set  it  up  though?
 1.  need  more  space  for  my  blackmoors..but  if  i  keep  them  in  the  big  tank  then  i  have  to  keep  other  goldfish  only  in  it  because  of  compatibility  issues?
 2.  Wanted  a  planted  tank,  but  i  cant  keep  gold  fish  in  it  can  I?  read  on  many  forums  that  goldfish  uproot/eatup  plants?
 3.  also  planted  tank  seems  like  lotsa  expense  and  maintainance  (if  somebody  can  pm  me  the  approx  ball  park  figure  for  setting  up  this  size  tank  ill  be  grateful,  maybe  im  overestimating  the  costs)
 4.  maintenance  also  seems  to  be  high  for  a  planted  tank..not  sure  whether  i  will  be  able  to  take  out  sufficient  time  for  it..i  can  spare  like  an  hr  every  week  no  probs..

i  know  its  too  vague  ideas  that  im  asking  suggestions  for..but  still  ill  be  grateful  if  you  guys  can  help  me  decide  and  set  up..

Goldfishes  are  good  to  look  at,  period.

They  themselves  constitute  a  full  subject  in  fishkeeping.  But  compatibility  being  the  main  concern,  Your  options  will  definitely  be  limited.

 Are  you  a  Goldfish  lover?

 Regards,

I  agree  with  Rasiknayak,  goldfish  and  that  too  black  moors  are  not  compatible  with  other  fish.
The  best  companions  for  goldfish  are  goldfish  themselves.

You  cannot  keep  goldfish  in  a  planted  tank  they  will  munch  down  everything.  Also  they  have  the  habit  of  playing  with  gravels  so  again  a  planted  substrate  will  dirty  the  whole  tank.

6  to  7  is  a  decent  no  for  3  footer...but  a  strict  no  in  planted  ,  as  they  love  to  uproot  everything  and  your  investment  will  be  useless.
As  suggested  ,  Gold  fishes  are  best  with  gold  fishes.

 All  hail  Ceaser....Just  joking  Chuckle

Caeser:  I  really  liked  when  you  said  the  time  you  can  put  for  the  tank....
To  be  frank  time  is  the  most  critical  factor  than  money  when  it  comes  to  a  hobby  including  living  things.

When  you  have  a  planted  tank  you  are  adding  more  VARIETY  of  living  beings  in  your  tank.
So  if  you  cant  put  more  time  than  1  hr  per  week.  Make  sure  you  go  with  ready  made  substrate  and  also  very  low  light  setup  including  crypts,  vallisneria,  sagitteria, anubia  and  other  ferns.
For  foregroung  you  can  use  dwarf  sagitteria, amazon  chain  sword,or  echinodoros  tenelus.
Mid  ground  :  crypt  wenditti  brown  or  other  dwarf  crypyts, amazon  swords
 background:  Vallisneria  or  taller  crypts.

You  can  start  up  with  this  and  I  bet  I  will  see  your  post  in  less  than  a  year.
That  post  will  be  "How  to  start  a  high  light  set  up  Very Happy  "This  time  you  will  have  1  hr  per  day.No  matter  how  busy  you  are  Thumb Up  .  This  is  a  very  addictive  hobby  which  you  will  love  to  do.
So  welcome  to  the  world  of  entertainment

Easiest  and  cheapest  fishes  for  planted  tank  will  be  (I  am  pointing  out  the  fishes  I  know.  Kindly  note  that  they  may  or  may  not  be  compatible  with  each  other  though  they  are  good  for  planted  tanks)

Mick  mouse  platys,Guppys  ,  Tiger  barb, mollys,  dwarf  gouras  let  me  know  if  you  need  more  options.  I  am  not  getting  all  the  names,  will  post  it  when  I  remember

 Hi  guys,

IMO,  keep  gold  fishes  and  decorate  your  tank  well.  Buy  a  very  good  filter  for  them  and  good  food.

My  experience  says  that  sooner  or  later,  even  if  you  go  into  other  varients  of  this  hobby,  somewhere  inside  you,  there  will  always  be  that  goldfish  syndrome  Very Happy  .  Later,  you  will  make  space  and  return  to  goldies  once  again.

So  I  suggest,  Keep  big  tank  for  goldies  and  that  small  tank  can  be  reused  for  planted.

As  already  you  know  planted  will  require  more  time  devotion  and  paitence,  therefore  you  can  go  for  a  small  one  with  one  stem  each  of  different  4  to  5  plants.

   Thumb Up  good  luck
