Planning  to  setup  a  simple  yet  beautiful  setup  for  convict  cichlids  in  a  3  feeter.
Planning  for  complete  sand  substrate  with  rocks,  roots  and  driftwoods.

Should  I  keep  it  Convict  only  or  can  i  add  other  medium  size  CA  cichlids.
Planning  to  add  salvini  cichlid  if  possible  to  get  in  bangalore.

Let's  see  how  this  one  comes.

 Ooops........Convict  cichlids  .....  Wall Bang

After  keeping  them  one  year  I  just  fade  up  with  them.....So  aggressive......even  when  they  are  going  for  second  spawning  they  killed  their  previous  babies.........and  the  spawn  like  crazy.......

Also  I  try  to  kept  6  Salvini  cichlid  with  them,  they  killed  5  of  them  and  I  able  to  rescue  just  one  only.  Right  now  the  lone  Salvini  with  my  friends  tank.

Also  I  try  to  keep  Firemouth...same  result....

At  last  I  give  them.  I  think  you  should  go  for  some  other  choice.

Thanks  for  your  view  Mr  Abhi,  I  know  that  convicts  even  though  growing  6-7  inches  only  medium  sized  cichlids  are  pretty  aggressive  and  from  your  words  I  can  imagine  how  they  would  be  during  spawning  which  they  do  like  rabbits.  But  I'm  not  sure  why  they  would  eat  their  own  spawn  I  have  heard  that  they  are  one  of  the  excellent  parents  when  it  comes  to  parenting.  i  actually  hoped  to  see  this  behaviour.  But  anyway  as  per  suggestion  I  will  pass  up  on  the  salvini  and  better  make  it  a  convict  only  tank.

 Thanks  and  Regards,
 Vishnu

Yes  yes  they  are  excellent  parents  till  their  next  spwan.......even  if  you  put  your  hands  into  tank  they  start  pinching  you...I  have  seen.....  it  lovely  looking  and  very  careful  about  their  babies...I  also  post  snaps  in  IAH  ....you  can  check  ...currently  can't  remember  the  thread  name  but  Author-abhis9  under  cichlid  forum....but  I  was  surprised  when  they  make  a  second  spwan  start  killing  their  own  babis.....I  hardly  get  2-3  babies  out  more  than  a  hunderd  .....

I  see  thanks  Abhi  for  the  information  i'll  keep  that  in  mind.  Is  there  any  possibility  that  if  I  can  create  enough  teritories  by  divind  with  rocks  and  roots  that  I  can  possibly  add  another  cichlid  variety  or  else  i'll  go  for  the  planned  convict  only  tank.

 Regards,
 Vishnu

 Vishnu,

Do  you  have  the  convicts  already  with  you  or  you  plan  to  buy  them...
Reason  why  I  am  asking  you  is...
If  you  are  planning  to  buy  new  ones...how  many  Convicts  do  you  intend  to  house  in  the  3  Footer.
Before  you  introduce  the  convicts...buy  Firemouth's  or  Salvini's  or  any  other  equally  aggressive  and  compatible  fishes.
Allow  them  to  settle  in  their  new  setup.
This  way...there  will  be  a  pecking  order
Provide  good  hiding  places  and  few  Silver  dollars  which  will  reduce  aggression  levels.

Thanks  for  your  suggestion  Vinod,  I'm  still  yet  to  get  the  Convicts.  I  was  just  waiting  for  some  thoughts  from  others.  I  have  read  a  lot  about  their  aggressive  nature  and  I'm  planning  to  get  a  male  female  pair  too.  So  was  just  hoping  will  it  be  ok  with  others.  But  as  you  suggested  me  I  would  try  to  add  the  others  so  they  can  create  their  territories  before  introducing  the  convicts.

By  the  way  I'm  planning  to  add  only  two  convicts  but  can  i  add  other  fishes  like  silver  dollars  as  well.

And  can  you  suggest  a  place  where  I  can  get  salvini  cichlids.

 Thanks  and  Regards,
 Vishnu

I  thought  I  saw  few  convicts  in  a  LFS  near  my  house...I  did  not  check  the  price  though...If  I  am  going  that  side  ,  will  check  out  with  him.
Keep  a  look  out  or  if  you  know  a  local  LFS  guy  well...let  him  know  and  you  can  get  some  good  ones...
Silver  dollars  are  best  as  they  mindlessly  roam  in  a  school  and  when  2  cichlids  are  at  each  other  they  rumble  past  and  distract.
 HEnce  best  for  reducing  aggression.

Victor1061:To  buy  chiclids  go  to  the  shop  in  hegde  nagar  near  nagwara  signal.  He  has  tonnes  of  chiclids  of  different  variety  and  I  think  his  prices  are  low.  I  am  not  sure  of  the  price  since  I  dont  keeps  chiclids  but  you  will  get  lot  of  varieties.  It  is  a  good  place  for  chiclid  lovers  as  he  keep  them  in  huge  tanks.

you  can  have  only  one  breeding  pair  in  3  feet  tank

in  a  group  of  2  or  more  when  one  pair  is  formed  they  will  kill  other  fishes  in  a  small  tank
