 Hi  guys,

After  one   whole  year  I  am  finally  getting  back  to  planted  tank  (again)   Agree  ..  I  was  using  2  36W  phillips  PLL  for   about  a  year  now.  Should  I  consider  replacing  the  lights  or  would  they  do  fine  untill  they  burn  out?  Am  I  expecting  a  shift  of  spectrum  or  a  reduction  in  total  output?

Any  help  on  this  regard  will  be  appreciated.  Thanks  in  advance.

ok..  I  am  really  confused  right  now.
@Mortis.  Can  you  tell  me  more?  Are  you  keeping  planted  tanks?
Since  you  are  saying  this  I  am  thinking  you  have  had  success  with  planted  tanks  without  replacing  the  light  untill  they  burn  out.
In  that  case  I  would  follow  your  advice  and  keep  the  lights.

Yes  I  am  into  planted  tanks  and  in  the  current  fixtures  I  am  using  I  only  changed  the  tubes  after  2.5  years  and  that  too  just  for  kicks  because  I  was  shifting  it  onto  a  new  tank  and  I  wanted  to  see  what  the  6500k  tubes  from  various  companies  looked  like  otherwise  I  would  have  run  them  till  they  had  stopped  working

Thanks  for  the  input  buddy.  From  some  sources  in  the  net  it  is  recommended  to  replace  the  lights  every  6  months  while  others  recommend  keeping  them  untill  they  burn  out  which  rendered  me  confused.  So  I  was  looking  for  advice  from  someone  who  had  practical  experience  in  this  area.

Replacing  lights  every  6  months  is  a  utter  waste  of  money..

This  is  really  a  debatable  topic  as  most  users  in  some  forums  recommend  to  replace  lights.

Why  spend  the  money  unnecessary  ?

I've  changed  my  lights  only  after  they've  burned  out.

I  kinda  tilt  towards  Mortis'  and  Pio's  thinking...........  I've  been  using  the  same  36W  PLL's  in  my  planted  tanks  for  about  2+  years  now.  Have  not  noticed  any  significant  difference  in  the  plant  growth  due  to  the  same  tubes  being  used  for  a  long  time.
Even  I  feel  changing  the  tubes  every  6  months  or  1  year  is  a  real  waste  of  money.  You  cannot  even  use  the  old  tube  for  your  home  lighting......   Very Happy  Ha  ha  ha.......  Unless  you  have  a  shop  which  has  similar  36W  industrial  lighting.

 Regards
 Prabhu

Same  pinch.  Even  I  am  in  your  shoes  guys,  hope  someone  helps  us  on  this.
But  I  dont  trust  eye,  because  any  bright  thing  would  look  bright.  A  comparitive  check  may  be  better.

And  this  is  what  I  am  learning  now,  wish  some  one  helps  to  conclude  it.

The  lamp  says  8000hrs  of  life  or  more
 http://www.cp-lighting.co.uk/DULUX-L-36W-860-2G11
Then  again,  the  intensity  decreases  by  time,so  I  wouldnt  want  to  run  anything  thats  died  out  70%(  I  am  a  B-grader  Sad)

Check  the  Rated  LLMF  in  below  link  and  I  wouldnt  want  it  to  decrease  much,  but  howmuch?  I  dont  know.

The  drop  in  PAR  and  shift  in  spectrum  over  the  life  is  barely  10%  so  its  not  like  you  will  go  from  10W  to  5W

All  the  lights  usually  mention  how  long  they  should  last  for  and  Mortis  is  right  in  saying  that  the  decrease  is  minimal.

LFS  will  always  tell  you  to  change  your  lights  because  they  want  more  business

Thats  cool  then,  I  ll  keep  what  I  have  Thumb Up  and  change  if  plants  arent  responding  well,  may  be  a  better  way.
Agree  with  you  Mortis,  it  might  be  very  minimal,  I  think  Trevor  ran  his  tank  for  2yr+  with  philips  trulite  and  he  grew  most  of  the  plants  of  hobby.

May  be  we  people  just  want  a  reason  to  buy  new  stuff.  Sad

Thank  you  all  for  your  comments.  It  seems  a  myth  has  been  busted.   :cheering:

I  would  continue  to  use  the  PLLs  and  see  how  much  plant  thrives.
