guys,  once  u  guys  start  to  have  an  aquarium,  cutting  down  the  costs  on  is  really  out  of  question,  u  can  only  limit  how  much  u  spend.  believe  it  or  not  i  had  a  empty  3  x  1  x  1.5  tank  in  my  house  about  a  month  back,  then  i  got  some  oscars,  then  a  texas,  then  angels  then  my  tank  was  full.  i  got  another  tank  3  x  1.5  1.5  with  fibre  top  and  neon  lighting,  boyu  filter  and  dual  outlet  air  pump,  then  a  thermostat,  then  undergravel  filter,  then  ...  the  list  goes  on  and  on    Very Happy  .  i  have  spent  this  month's  salary  only  on  my  aqarium,  and  guess  what  i  got  a  imported  flower  horn  and  a  black  ghost  and  i  told  my  parents  they  just  cost  Rs  200    Very Happy  and  my  mom  was  shouting    Shocked  .  once  u  start  spending  no  way  can  u  have  budgets.  guess  what  am  planning  to  get  a  new  tank    Cheer    Drinking    Thumbs Up    4  x  2  x  2,  this  week.  three  cheers  for  my    Thumbs Up    Cheer    Cheering    Thumb Up    fishes.

 HAHAHAHAHHA  ROFL

 Nice  topic.
 Had  a  good  laugh.
Showed  the  post  to  my  wife  and  guess  what  "See  u  are  so  lucky"
   ROFL

I  am  relieved  to  know  that  I  am  not  alone.  There  are  more  of  the  same  species  on  this  planet  with  similar  problems.

I  started  off  with  a  planted  tank  in  mind  and  ordered  a  5'x18"x18"  tank
what  initially  worked  out  at  15000/-  gradually  started  increasing.
I  have  a  feeling  it  has  touched  30k  and  the  grand  total  row  doesn’t  seem  to  be  in  sight.
Making  your  dream  tank  can  be  great  fun.  See  it  take  shape  over  a  period  of  time.  People  at  home  (anti  aquarium  squad)  wondering  how  the  amount  of  neon  tetras    seem  to  have  increased.
Every  carry  bags  being  eyed  with  suspicion  HAHAHAHAH

Well  guess  I  am  happy  it  is  all  over  or  is  it.......................  Very Happy

IMO  u  must  go  for  the  biggest  tank  affordable  by  saving  for  it  (maybe  a  few  months  delay)  or  building  it  gradually  by  collecting  items  as  and  when  u  can  afford  them.

But  end  of  the  day  it  is  all  very  satisfying  and  worth  it.

 regards

 Hello,Aquarist  Anonymous!
My  name  is  Aditya  Murthy.....I  have  an  Aquarium  "Problem"(15  specific  problems  of  various  sizes....and  growing)Its  not  entirely  my  fault.....my  LFS  supplies  me  on  credit  Surprised  .....so,  like  all  bills, along  with  electricity,tax,water,grocery...at  the  end  of  each  month  I  recieve  an  LFS  bill(for  my  eyes  only)(it  saves  others  in  the  house  unneccessary  agony)--------->lets  call  that  bill  as  the  "black"  aspect. Then,my  kind  wife  "allows"  me  a  "white"  expenditure  of  about  Rs  5000/-  per  annum(HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA  HA  HA  HA)...(ha  ha  ha).....(still  wiping  off  the  tears  from  laughing  too  much)
I  do  manage  to  breed  some  tanganyikans  now  and  then. And  the  ubiquitous  angels.I  sell  the  fry, and  supposedly  fund  my  entire  hobby......
(HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA  HA  HA  HA)....peanuts.(and  nuts,if  i'm  to  be  included)
There  is  a  new  term  coined  in  one  of  those  womens  magazines(femi-something)"finacial  infidelity".It  didnt  take  me  very  long  to  use  the  pages  of  that  article(cal)  to  clean  up  the  front  glass  of  my  marine  tank. It  works  nicely.
I  keep  promising  myself  to  reform. But  I  know  i'll  be  spending  much  more  money  in  psychotherapy  without  the  hobby. So  my  objectives  are  clear.Feed  the  family....rest  is  for  the  fish.I  get  to  live  life  only  once(or  thats  what  we  all  think)So  three  cheers  to  blowing  money!  Very Happy

On  a  serious  note  Chuckle  (if  I  may  call  it)  breeding  and  selling  your  fish  is  an  interesting, challenging, noble, and  hopeless  way  of  funding  your  hobby. You  must  try  it!

Great  topic.  I  am  joining  all  you  guys  on  the  Wifey  Syndrome.  My  wife  has  been  in  her  mother's  place  for  a  long  time,  and  I  haven't  been  quiet  either.

You  see  that's  when  I  got  into  the  hobby  (in  her  absence)  and  she  returns  tomorrow  !!!  Though  she  knows  about  it,  I  am  not  sure  what  her  reaction  will  be  !!    I  have  spent  x  times  more  money  than  what  I  have  given  her  and  have  always  told  her  I  am  short  on  cash  !!!!  Surprised    ROFL

I  already  have  a  cement  tank  where  I  plan  to  introduce  guppies.  I  have  plans  to  set  up  my  second  small  tank  (1x1x1)  just  to  have  plants  initially  with  DIY  CO2  setup.

So,  budget?  what  budget?  It's  more  like  "how  much  am  I  going  to  spend  on  fish  today?".  It's  an  addi(c)tion  but  certainly  no  vice  (hic)  !!

Looks  like  many  of  us  do  the  same  thing  as  far  as  giving  out  the  right  budget  of  the  tank  goes  Chuckle

Mine  is  probably  one  of  the  worst  here  Unsure  Lies    Innocent

1)Eheim  2217  -  i  tell  my  parents  that  i  bought  a  bucket  in  shivajinagar, bought  the  pump  is  SJP  road  and  i  fit  the  2  together  with  a  lot    cotton  inside    ROFL  .It  cost  me  1500  bucks    Shocked    (My  bro  sent  me  the  money  from  the  US.Hope  my  parents  dont  realise  that  Crying or Very sad  )

 2)My  4  feet  planted  tank  with  top  -  2000  bucks(spent  3  times  more)

3)gravel  100  kgs  purchased  at  1  ruppee  a  kilo  Neutral

4)Plants  purchased  at  500  bucks(spent  3  times  more  and  my  tank  is  still  has  only  60  %  cover)

5)Flowerhorns  -  my  friend  breeds  them

6)Turtles  -  i  picked  it  up  from  Mekedatu

Most  of  this  i  bought  ,after  selling  my  old  mobile  phones. What  do  i  tell  at  home  regarding  the  mobile  phones...hmmm,well.i  lost  it/got  wet  in  the  rain/i  dont  have  it,may  be  you  have  kept  it  somewhere  etc  etc  etc  Crying or Very sad

Just  hope  that  none  of  my  dad's  friends  are  into  this  hobby    Surprised

Wow  you  guys  are  really  spending  big  bucks  on  the  hobby.
I've  gone  the  cheap  way  getting  things  from  other  hobbyists  and  ebay.

My  marine  tank  has  cost  me  slightly  over  Rs  10000  so  far  and  I  have  got  almost  everything  from  fellow  hobbyists  including  the  tank,  LR,  skimmer,  test  kits  and  wavemaker.
Somehow  I  feel  this  is  reasonable  for  a  50  gallon  tank.
Going  through  the  network  is  a  lot  better  than  anything  else.

 Hi  Everyone

Talking  of  budgets.    I  don't  think  any  of  the  hobbyists  stick  to  any  kind  of  budget.  Its  like  you  take  your  Girl  friend  around  and  you  lose  track  on  what  you  are  spending  on  her  just  like  you  visit  the  LFS  and  buy  whatever  catches  your  fancy.  Its  like  spending  something  for  your  love  there  are  no  budgets.  Hope  everyone  agrees  Cheering

Is  it  possible  for  moderators  to  split  this  thread  into  two,  one  can  be  a  humerous  one  and  second  one  can  be  a  serious  one  having  only  my  question  and  the  estimate.  Very Happy

How  much  ever  i  spend  on  fishes,  i  really  dont  have  much  problem  disclosing  the  prices.    I  just  cut  a  zero  or  2  if  the  bill  goes  to  5  digits.    Very Happy
The  budget  for  non  planted  tanks  would  primarily  depend  on  tank  size  and  the  price  of  the  fish(es)  and  of  course  the  filter  of  choice.

Sen  has  written  clearly  that  the  budget  is  only  for  starting  a  planted  aquarium  not  for  the  next  week  or  running  etc  or  the  for  sure  definite  progressive  additions  or  changes  which  either  may  be  essential  or  takes  the  fancy  of  the  planted  nut.  In  short  its  a  budget  for  day  one.
