Hey Guys,
As any other hobbyist, I frequently visit lots of LFSs near my house at Bangalore and also visit Kolathur, at my home town Chennai once in a while.
In all most all the stores the one fish which is harassed the most is the Betta. They are placed in tiny covers to cups in which they cant even even be straight leave alone breathing and swimming.
Nobody really cares if they are sick and if they die they are still in those cups for weeks stinking and horribly deteriorating.
I tried many times to rescue these poor ones but at last give up realizing I cant save all of them.
Specific Incident - I visited a well known large Aqua shop in Banaswadi last week and saw that they had brought a huge collection of Bettas all bright and brisk, of course colorful. I thought they were on wait for a huge export or sell off. Today I was excited to go to the shop to look at them, but my foot was in my mouth when I saw hundreds of bettas sick, dead and sadly placed in the same filthy water gasping for air. I can mention the Aqua-store if it is permitted. I literally cried standing there thudding each cup (closed airtight) to see whether they are alive.
If I tell them, they give back a stare as if they are gonna burn me down.
We should do something about this. Can we (IAH members) educate the LFSs? Cant we arrange for get-together meets like our IAH meets inviting LFS folks and imparting knowledge on how to maintain these cute animals ?! We have one of the best group of senior aquarists in INDIA.
Just my few thoughts. !!
Thanks

great thought
we should do it for local regions not only for bettas but all other fishes especially those goldies
we can educate them of maintaining aquariums along with doing a fair business with right advice to customers
in this process many would give us back but we have to take that politely and patiently may be after year or so things will change.
Many LFS will tell us they know every thing but they really dont, many things like cycling, beneficial bacteria and filter flow not known
they generally suggest high filter pump even for small tanks saying this will avoid water change for 40 days or so they do this to woo thier customer because if they tell that you need a minimum of 4 feet tank for a flower horn with  weekly 50% water change the customer may drop the idea and the hobby but here in this case the LFS may suggest some other options thats is what we need to try and explain to him. instead of investing high in number of FH he may get in to planted stuff because if he sells planted tank concept he may sell many things along with it and may earn more than a FH. kepping bettas in bigger tank is not feasible but altleast they can do daily water change and feeding
We keep criticising these LFS guys this time lets try to help them.
MAM lets do it |

A good thought and initiative.
However I have my doubts how the idea of educating the LFS will be taken. I know many LFS in bangalore where when we walk in, we are treated as alien's. Just because we have tried such a thing in the past. I have once been asked to buy goods from another shop as well !
They just sit across and wait for us to go. They tell other customers to wait till we leave so that we do not educate the innocent first time buyer.
maybe we can educate the shop owners on the pretext that they will be IAH certified fishkeepers Not sure if that is against the rules. |

we need to form a group locally with a IAH Tshirts and may be a certificate can work.
I objective should be a LFS fair business, we need to tell them that we understand your business and competition but there are other better ways of doing business. we can give them some example of other good LFS in the town.
In my opinion some LFS guys lack source of knowledge so they carry the information given to them by a whole seller or some of his aquaintances. further not all will shoo us away some may listen to us so lets give us a try .
Guys needs some inputs on this |

IMO- I suggest .....
that we make posters of IAH and stick-em-up in LFS first to bring their attention towards appropriate fish-keeping.
Like posters with Do's & Dont's.
Other thing would be put stickers of IAH on rear wind screens of cars "KEEP THE FISH HAPPY" slogan on it.
Even bikes & Scooters can have a small sticker to spread awareness.
Make cards and keep them, atleast 2 in your pockets, so that when a lay fish keeper asks questions we can give them a card to visit IAH website.
I spend atleast 1 hr at crawford market in a month or twice a month, I spend about 1 hr in my favourite LFS (shree aquarium Giawadi).Whenever people enter the LFS, asking questions, we should volunteer to give them guidance.
I write the IAH web link and give them to visit IAH if they have net access.
I have persuaded my LFS guy to come and participate with me at MAM.
A whole group going together may look like a raid
Instead bring your favourite LFS guy and beat him-up at MAM
I mean refine them.
YOU and ME let practice what we preach : |

Though the intentions are good, I feel we overlook the fact that most LFS see fish as a source of money and not a living entity.
I suspect it is more so indifference and not (only) lack of knowledge on LFS's part.
Even this aspect should be addressed. IMHO. |

I feel if we go in a proper way with a small group with some mature knowledgeable person with experience in public speaking/relationship management to lead us they may pay heed to our say |

Actually. I have already educated many lfs in my area and home sellers to keep them in divided tanks.
I just made up things saying they'll die if they're In such conjusted spaces. So now they are in 4x4 spaced tanks.
I also tell them to feed them once a day. Up till now about four lfs have been properly following my Instructions.
Few big lfs such as zooland and others don't bother giving the fighers much space as they get sold very quickly. So they don't bother wasting space for them. And very small lfs leave them in packets because they have no space in their shop.
I think we should think of a way for every type of lfs to properly keep bettas. |

nice idea by garothman
but dude LFS need money, he dont bother about the health of fish...no matter wht breed it is
about beeta they sold under name fighter fish...name itself suggest tough and hardy breed
only few people knws about the fact..90% ppl who visit LFS , are new or uneducated hobbyist, when fish die they simply goes to the LFS and ask for new variety.after certain time they give up....end of the chapter
i know many ppl whom i met in LFS shop they invest heafty money, one fellow i met him in LFS six month back
planted tank of 130gl....invested about lakh...for soil and automatic co2 dispanser extrnal filter..and many more things
but still his fish die within 4 mnts..he was upset and LFS was ready to help..nt free
for him fish is not love but showoff..so best we can do is spreading awarness about fish keeping..
as u say...i like all your suggestions...HATS OFF....
gud luck for future fish |
