I  have  a  5g  RCS  tank.  There  are  23-24  shrimp  in  it  of  which  3  are  preggers.  I  wanted  to  know  if  I  can  use  hardboiled  egg-shells(finely  powdered)  for  adding  as  a  calcium  suppliment?

 Info:

I  use  UV-filtered  water  in  my  tank,  with  an  addition  of  a  JBL  Biotopol  (not  'C'  variety)  water  conditioner.
WC  -  once  every  two  weeks(15-20%)  and  top  off  every  week.
Diet:  feeding  once  every  2  days  with  a  varied  diet  of  algae  wafers,  Ocean  free  Supersticky  food  for  small  fishes,  Ocean  deep  Spirulina  etc.  They  also  munch  on  the  green  algae  that  grows  naturally  in  the  tank.
Temperature  of  water  :  28   deg  C(because  of  the  summer).
Other  inmates:  pond  snails,  seed  shrimp,  copepods.

Is  calcium  essential  for  shrimps?  Never  knew  it.

Shrimp  body  can  be  hardened  by  giving  them  chitin.  Chitin  is  present  in  insects  give  any  other  small  dried  insects  like  daphnia  or  other  dry  shrimp.  Calcium  is  nothing  do  with  shrimps.  You  can  give  calcium  rich  food  to  snails  and  turtles.

I  regularly  give  killed  mosquitoes  to  my  bettas  as  live  food.  I  give  dried  daphnia  and  froazen  artemia  to  my  shrimp  to  get  healty  body  covering.

If  you  are  feeding  blanched  spinach  one  in  a  while  it  is  enough  as  the  spinach  is  rich  in  calcium   Thumb Up

 This  is  not  correct.
Shrimps  have  a  exoskeleton,  and  need  calcium  in  their  diet.
However  most  of  the  time  their  calcium  requirements  are  met  with  from  their  diet  and  water.
As  long  as  you  are  not  using  RO  water  and  feeding  balanced  diet  they  will  remain  healthy.

Just  feed  them  blanched  calcium  rich  vegetables.  Your  feeding  is  fine  and  stabalise  the  temperature  to  25-26.

Thanks  all  for  their  timely  help..I  do  believe  that  shrimp  require  a  good  nutritious  diet.

@Bharadwazputta:  calcium  is  a  priority  as  shrimp  do  have  an  exoskeleton  which  they  shed  and  require  to  replenish  the  essential  nutrients  for  the  same.

 @SandeepRaghuvanshi:  thanks  for  confirming.

@Mortis:  thanks  for  the  idea..I  have  stopped  feeding  them  fresh  veg  (why?  just  lazy...  Innocent     )  I  will  do  what  you  suggested.

@navneethtk:  how  do  I  stabilize  the  temp??  I  dont  have  a  chiller  and  I  did  add  an  ice  cube  or  two  which  didn't  help.

That  would  only  be  necessary  in  a  large  tank  with  a  huge  colony  but  otherwise  it  is  unnecessary
