Actually  I'm  very  new  into  photography  and  getting  into  this  because  of  my  planted  fish  tank.

I  love  to  capture  pics  of  my  fish  and  so  i  got  into  this  and  my  mobile  camera  is  not  good  enough

so  wanna  try  some  good  camera  and  start  learning  some  serious  photography...

so  just  want  to  start  with  a  beginner  camera  and  the  budget  is  like  max.20k  (  i  know  it's  pretty  less  for  a  good  cam)
but  still  need  to  get  a  good  cam  around  this  to  start  of  with.

actually  my  uncle  is  getting  me  the  camera  from  US  this  week  so  I  need  to  decide  a  model  in  2days  and  inform  him

I  don't  know  anything  regarding  these  cameras  so  want  an  expert  advice  and  who  better  than  IAH  members  as  i  have  seen  many  pics  here  and  loved  them.

and  Yes  main  purpose  for  the  camera  would  be  capturing  fish  and  some  landscapes  during  usual  trips  and  family  photos  off  course.
So  please  do  help  me  regarding  this

 hi  Naveen,
At  your  budget  you  may  not  have  much  choice.  Try  to  stretch  it  to  about  30K.  Then  you  could  get  some  seriously  good  stuff.
Where  exactly  in  the  US  does  your  uncle  stay.  If  he  lives  in  or  around  New  York.  Ask  him  to  go  to  B&H.  IME  they  are  the  best  store  for  anything  photography  based.  They  also  have  a  used  equipment  section  where  they  sell  some  decent  stuff.
Checkout  their  website:  B&H.  This  should  give  you  a  fair  idea.  Also  if  you  find  anything,  you  could  order  it  from  here  itself  &  have  it  delivered  to  your  uncle's.  Their  mail  order  system  is  also  great.

These  are  some  models  I  found  quite  interesting  within  your  stated  budget:
 Canon  PowerShot  SX50  HS
 Sony  Cyber-shot  DSC-HX200V
 Panasonic  Lumix  FZ60
 Panasonic  Lumix  DMC-G3

 Check  out  this  link:  dpreview
This  site  is  a  favorite  of  mine  to  check  out  camera  reviews.

see  which  model  fits  your  budget  &  needs  and  check  out  the  review.

 Hope  this  helps!   Thumb Up

You  can  choose  between  Nikon  D3100  &  Canon  EOS  600D.  both  are  equally  matched.  Let  me  give  you  a  low  down:

The  colors  on  the  Nikon  will  be  a  bit  more  saturated  than  the  canon  which  will  give  you  softer  colors.
Nikon's  lenses  are  better  than  canon's  in  general  but  more  expensive.  Unless  you  go  for  the  real  upmarket  stuff.  This  is  for  a  later  date.  As  of  now,  for  your  budget,  a  kit  lens  is  all  you  will  get.
As  you  progress  with  buying  lenses  and  accessories,  the  nikon  will  work  out  more  expensive  but  IMO  the  canon  camera  will  'be'  replaced  quicker  than  a  nikon.  Nikon  cameras  are  built  better  and  last  longer.  Not  to  say  that  canons  are  badly  built.  Their  hardware  seems  to  get  'tired'  after  a  while.  But  that's  not  necessarily  a  bad  thing.  If  you're  the  kind  of  guy  who  like  to  update  frequently,  then  the  canon  can  be  a  good  choice.  That  way  you  keep  up  with  technology  (which  has  become  a  necessary  evil  in  today's  digital  world  just  like  computers).

Personally,  I  would  take  the  Nikon.  Buy  good  optics  and  keep  the  camera  for  5  or  6  years  before  I  replace  it  (I  would  have  good  lenses  already!  Cheering  ).  Rather  than  buy  a  canon  &  replace  it  every  3  years.  you  CAN  keep  the  canon  also  for  longer.  But  there  will  be  some  change  in  imaging  quality  which  may  or  may  not  be  noticeable  to  all.  And  you  may  or  may  not  want  to  live  with  it.

But  the  call  is  yours  to  take.  As  Madan's  (IAH  admin)  signature  says;  no  one  gets  into  photography  because  its  cheap.  BE  WARNED:  Photography  is  a  lot  like  fishkeeping.  VERY  ADDICTIVE!!!  Drinking

 Naveen

You  can  go  for  Canon  1100  or  500D  which  will  fit  in  your  budget  as  well  as  get  you  some  more  extra  kits
Iam  a  canon  guy  thats  why  i  recommend  the  same.   Very Happy

Check  this  out  for  the  comparison  between  the  2  cameras
 http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-1100D-vs-Canon_EOS_500D

check  this  out  for  some  kits.  Ask  your  uncle  to  check  what  extra  he  can  get  over  there

Actually,  Ramdas,  I'm  a  Canon  guy  too!  But  I  update  my  equipment  almost  every  year!!!  Surprised  And  I  have  varied  uses  (I  am  an  ad  photographer),  so  neutral  colors  &  frequent  upgradation  are  my  thing.
For  a  lay  person,  it  would  be  nice  if  they  had  some  spunk  in  colors.  Especially  with  aquarium  photography.  And  the  longevity  of  Nikon  is  a  factor.

Actually,  I'm  starting  to  lean  towards  Sony  now.  They  have  come  up  with  some  amazing  equipment.  And  the  real  magnet  for  me  is  the  Carl-Zeiss  optics.  Best  in  the  world!  I'm  just  waiting  for  them  to  tweak  their  cameras  a  little  bit  before  I  go  out  to  grab  one.  They  don't  have  tethered  shooting  capabilities,  which  is  a  must-have  for  me.  But  I'll  cross  that  bridge  when  I  get  to  it.  Its  a  few  six  digit  numbers  that  I  have  to  throw  to  the  sharks!  Sad

 Hi  guys

I  am  not  much  of  a  photography  expert.  In  fact  I  just  got  Bryan  petersons  book  "understanding  exposure"  and  went  through  a  part  of  it  yesterday.

At  his  price  point  why  not  an  advanced  point  and  shoot  instead  of  a  dslr?  I  doubt  whether  he  has  made  his  mind  on  investing  more  (money  as  well  as  other  resources)  into  photography.  Indeed  owning  canons  myself  I  would  second  the  option  of  the  pwershot  quoted  above!

I  have  it's  elder  brother  the  sx40hs  and  to  duplicate  its  zoom  reach  and  dof  on  my  doosra  a  650d  would  stress  out  most  of  us.

Buying  DSLR  for  capturing  fish?  I  would  say  get  an  p&s  camera.
DSLR  is  meant  for  serious  photographers,  also  wht  you  get  with  canon  rebel  Xs  and  Nikon  d3200  is  very  limited,  both  are  entry  level  DSLR's.
Major  misconception  among  most  of  the  people,  is  the  camera  that  makes  the  big  difference,  but  it  is  not.  Its  the  lenses  that  takes  almost  60%  of  the  credit,  rest  goes  for  the  camera.  With  a  good  p&s  camera  you  can  get  beautiful  pictures.

Photography  is  more  a  complex  hobby,  requires  amazing  understanding  of  light  and  creativity.  Most  of  the  times  people  get  disappointed  with  DSLR's  with  lack  of  skills.

My  intention  is  not  to  discourage  or  pick  you.  I  would  suggest  to  invest  in  DSLR's  only  if  your  crazy  about  photography.  You  also  need   55-200mm,  35mm  and  a  fast  lens.  Must  say  its  an  expensive  hobby.

Start  reading  dpreview.com  before  you  take  a  call.

Pm  for  any  queries,  I  have  been  doing  photography  for  the  past  10yrs.

 Thanks
 Gokul

@  Deepesh  &  Gokul:  I  agree  with  your  views  on  'cost  vs  features'.  But  there  is  no  real  comparison  between  a  SLR  &  a  P&S.  The  argument  about  lenses  being  the  decider  is  a  thing  of  the  past.  That's  when  people  shot  with  film.  Today  the  camera  (actually  the  sensor)  is  the  major  factor  because  the  quality  of  the  sensor  and  its  related  properties  have  a  major  bearing  on  picture  quality.  The  resolving  power  of  a  DSLR  sensor  is  light  years  away  from  P&S  cameras.  There  is  however,  a  third  kind  of  camera  which  is  called  a  bridge  camera  which  is  almost  as  good  as  a  DSLR  but  has  a  fixed  lens.

The  P&S  cameras  do  not  hold  good  throughout  their  zoom  range.  After  a  certain  zoom  level,  it  is  a  digital  zoom.  What  this  means  is,  the  camera  lens  is  not  zooming  in,  it  is  the  image  that  is  getting  cropped.  I  agree  that  to  get  similar  levels  of  enlargement,  you  will  have  to  give  a  hand  &  a  leg  in  a  SLR  system.  But  the  resolution  cannot  be  compared.

Even  as  an  amateur,  I  would  pick  an  entry  level  SLR  to  an  expensive  point  &  shoot.

Anything  is  only  as  complicated  as  you  want  it  to  be  or  you  think  it  to  be.  A  DSLR  can  be  used  in  a  very  simple  way  also.  Even  using  an  'all  manual'  method  can  be  pretty  straight-forward  as  long  as  you  don't  get  tangled  up  in  all  the  jargon.

 @  Athreyan  and  Ram

Thank  You  ,  I  am  actually  looking  to  get  Nikon's  D3100  after  watching  a  lot  of  reviews  and  all  your  suggestions

 @Deepesh  and  Gokul  k

After  reading  up  on  many  forums  and  articles  ,  I  agree  that  an  advanced  expensive  point  and  shoot  can  serve  my  purpose
but  defenitely  i'm  not  going  to  stop  my  photography  hobby  here  with  only  capturing  fish

my  main  purpose  is  capturing  fish  but  i  do  a  lot  of  Road  trips  on  my  bike  and  miss  a  good  cam  for  capturing  those  beautiful  landscapes  and  greenery, which  I  love  the  most

So  was  thinking  on  getting  an  entry  level  DSLR  so  that  i  can  get  to  learn  a  bit  and  then  upgrade  by  getting  new  lenses

Naveen...  You  will  not  like  the  quality  of  the  pics  you  take  in  stock  lens  in  a  DSLR  cam  be  it  aquarium  photography  or  as  you  say  landscapes..  You'll  regret  you  decision  with  only  18-55  lens  going  to  road-trips..

Also,  Fish  photography  is  different..  &  landscapes  is  different..  they  require  different  lenses..

I'd  suggest  you  to  go  with  a  prosumer  camera..  which  is  very  well  available  at  your  budget..  Learn  with  that  &  then  go  for  a  DSLR..  This  is  what  I  did  &  thus  suggesting  you..

 Regards,
 ABHILASH

One  of  the  problems  with  aquarium  photography  is  the  use  of  flash.
Use  of  built  in  flash  bounces  the  light  back  to  camera  and  ruins  the  shot.
So  a  remote  flash  or  a  flashgun  with  moveable  top  are  required.
If  you  don't  use  flash,  use  a  tripod, and  camera  needs  to  give  you  manual  controls.
Some  high  end  point  and  shoot  camera's  give  you  these  controls,  and  you  can  take  decent  pictures  with  them.
Remember  it  is  the  skill  of  person  and  not  camera  which  decides  the  beauty  of  the  shot.
I  do  not  know  how  many  of  us  know  that  Takashi  Amano  like  to  use  large  format  film  cameras  and  does  not  use  DSLR..
