 keluthi,
You  are  not  getting  the  concept  of   HMF,  its  not  used  at  the  bottom..  but  a  thick  foam  is  used  as  a  wall..
Ok  here  is  the  Idea  behind  the  filter..  The  image  shows  the  aquarium  as  seen  from  the  front..

 Keluthi,
First  off,  congrats  on  the  new  arrival!
The  Hamburg  Mattenfilter  works  like  a  charm.  Amazing  filtration.  It  works  well  in  a  planted  tank  too.  It  is  very  easy  to  set  up  &  very  easy  to  maintain.  I  don't  have  one  right  now,  but  have  tried  it  before.

The  thing  about  this  filter  is  that  you  NEVER  remove  or  clean  the  filter.  What  I  mean  by  'never'  is  that  it  needs  to  be  done  only  once  in  a  year  or  even  longer.  The  whole  thing  about  this  system  is  that  the  filter  should  not  be  cleaned.  otherwise  the  whole  filter  is  reset  (the  nitrogen  cycle).  And  the  main  USP  of  this  filtration  is  biological  filtration,  so  resetting  it  often  would  defeat  the  purpose.  But  most  of  us  redo  our  tanks  in  that  time  span.  So  we  'never'  have  to  clean  the  filter.  Every  now  and  then,  you  only  vacuum  the  detritus  off  of  the  tank  side  of  the  sponge  (not  the  'sump'  side).

But  the  picture  you  have  shown  is  an  adaptation  of  the  same  design.  I'm  not  sure  it's  a  very  good  adaptation.  This  system  works  on  slow  water  flow.  If  you  don't  have  the  filter  all  the  way  to  the  bottom,  I  don't  know  how  effective  it  will  be.  There  are  better  adaptations  that  you  can  find  with  a  google  search.  The  corner  one  seems  to  be  most  popular.  Also  remember,  this  is  not  really  for  large  tanks.  it  is  meant  for  small  to  medium  tanks.
