Hey guys,
I'm trying to get back into the hobby with the grace of God and thanks mainly to my 4 year old, who wants fishes...
(Kid overruled mommy... )
I'm getting a 30"x24"x24", with filter built into the back... I really am not sure what those things are called... hmmm... looks something like this but at the back of the tank:
Here's the problem... son wants "blue" fishes, wife wants colored ones (read as Goldfish, Mollies, Tetras, Scats, Angels, etc.)...
Right now, I'm starting the search for JD... anyone know where I can get one?? Thinking of keeping firemouth, GT, Texas, Salvini, Jaguar.... really unable to decide... Any help would be appreciated...

the tank will be on a box stand, so that would be size limit... I realize it's a sump filter, but does it have a new name if it's done within the tank itself?? somebody called it an inline filter at the LFS when I was describing the tank...
anyways, I found a LFS called Fishaway that will be getting Electric Blue Jack Dempsey sometime next week... I never kept those before and it meets all the requirements:
1) Kid - "Blue Fish"
2) Wife - "Pretty Fish"
3) Me - CICHLID ONLY (for now)

Well frankly I was puzzled when you asked what that filter was as I thought you knew. If there is a specific name other than a sump filter/Refugium then I don't know.
An EBJD does fit all your requirements!
However I must warn you that this is a politically dangerous situation! You might find that your wife and kid (henceforth called the constituency) having their initial demands met, will want newer concessions!
Another blue fish and just like this since this one is so beautiful... Err another EBJD?
Blue is good. Orange will be good contrast... A goldfish?
2-3 fish is too less... Can we have some of the small ones too?
Just make sure your constituency knows how difficult it was to come to a compromise with your own desires so that further negotiations are easier!

I know... I'm expecting a small war when it comes to the next fish... for the next 6 months or so, I'm pretty safe... the EBJD will be 1 1/2", so guppies are the answer.... once he finishes eating all of those, then I'm thinking GT, Texas, or Firemouth... maybe Jaguar or Salvini... depending on what they choose...
Figured it's easier to negotiate when you give them choices, rather than saying what do you like in the LFS...

Its been so long, I thought maybe a new word had cropped up for the filter setup... felt kinda strange calling it an inline filter when it was a sump filter... sometimes you don't know if you are outdated or if somebody is making stuff up...

With young kids around it might not be a good idea to have fish eat another live fish,

Well, I haven't read through all the responses in detail. Considering your tank size, I thought your requirements could have been met with Demasoni, Yellow labs etc. with good rock set up

For starters EBJD are very shy , constant water changes are essential to bring about the blue in them.
Sometimes it is frustrating to have them as they will hide for ever and will never come out except for feeding. ( Personal experience)
Feed Spirulina rich food , along with a mix feed to maintain the rich blue in them.
Get EBJD's from a good source , reason...a lot of inbreeding has resulted to higher mortalilty before they reach 3 inches and faded colors.

whoa...
the guy is from "fishaway"... any ideas on how good his fishes are?? any particular feed in mind? it's been quite some time, so all the help is appreciated...
NO EBJD... 2 african (the albino ones, I don't remember what they're called), 1 salvini, and 1 Firemouth....
the worst part: red, white, and green pebbles... "To bring color to the tank"-Wife
I'm not too sure if the Africans get along with the salvini and the firemouth, especially in terms of water conditions. And if you want the fish to show more natural feeding behavior you will have to change that substrate for something smaller grained. By the way the substrate you have now is often termed clown puke unless of course you happen to like it. But I guess one of the advantages of living in a democratic household is that one can hope for negotiations later on.

Democracy? what's that? clown puke came about like so:
Wife: "The green, white, red, and blue pebbles will add color to the tank. Lets get a blue background as well... wait... no... blue background will not look good with blue pebbles..."
Me: "Hmmm..."
Wife: "Lets get the green, white, and red ones... it'll look really nice..."
Me: "Hmmm..."
Son: "I want that blue fish and that yellow fish."
Me: "Hmmm..."
Wife: "Look... it's just a suggestion. We'll get whatever you want."
Me: (Thinking) "Oh Edit... it's that TONE!!"
Me: "Lets get 1 kg of each of the colors"
Son: "Blue fish and yellow fish..."
So... negotiation means... what exactly?
BTW, the blue background was supposed to go into the tank, after the water was filled... tried putting it in, in front of family. Didn't work (what a surprise).
Wife: "Oh well... it just looks a bit ugly... atleast the pebbles give it color."
