ok,  today  &  yesterday  have  been  the  worst  days  of  my  fishkeeping  saga.  I  will  give  you  the  whole  story  a  bit  later,  right  now  my  tiger  barb  seems  to  be  in  trouble.

This  is  happening  only  since  morning.  I  found  him  looking  bloated.  And  the  bloat  is  increasing  by  the  hour!  Since  afternoon  he  has  this  'pinecone'  look  where  the  scales  are  all  sticking  out  due  to  the  bloating.  I  did  a  web  search  &  I'm  getting  the  idea  it  is  dropsy.  And  most  forums  seem  very  negative  about  the  fish's  chances.  He  seems  very  agitated,  but  is  hiding.  fin  movements  are  very  rapid  which  suggests  stress.

Treating  the  fish  at  this  stage  is  tough.  However  you  can  transfer  the  fish  in  a  smaller  tank  and  dose  1tsp/5g.  You  can  supplement  the  treatment  with  antibitotics  such  as  RESTECLIN  250  (Tetracycline)  use  1  capsule  (250mg)  in  30l  tank.  Raising  the  temperature  to  30c  helps  also  use  only  airstone  in  the  QT.

The  probability  of  the  fish  to  survive  is  less  but  you  can  give  a  try.  I  cured  goldfish  long  back  with  this  treatment.

 Hi  Ruchit,
Do  you  mean  salt?  I've  already  put  him  in  a  plastic  tub  (25l).  I'll  go  right  out  &  get  the  medicine.

One  more  thing;  what  about  the  other  fishes?  Do  they  risk  contracting  the  infection?  Do  you  think  a  large  water  change  will  be  sufficient  for  them?  or  should  I  think  of  some  preemptive  treatment?

Can  I  follow  the  same  procedure  and  meds  for  a  neon  tetra  that  has  a  pop  eye  disease?  Also,  do  you  have  a  filter  in  that  tub?

Sorry  missed  the  "Epsom  Salt".  You  can  first  treat  the  infected  fish  and  keep  the  water  in  the  main  tank  at  top  condition,  usually  dropsy  is  caused  due  to  poor  water  conditions.

Surprised  poor  water  conditions?  OMG,  That  tank  (20G)  has  been  the  one  I  take  great  pride  in  (water  quality  &  stability).  The  tank  has  been  running  for  1  &  a  half  year  without  any  problems.  Other  than  a  couple  of  aggression  problems  &  a  couple  of  jumpers,  I've  never  had  disease  based  deaths.  It  even  housed  6  gold  fish  without  any  problems  of  water  quality.  I'm  a  stickler  for  water  changes.  I  do  a  30%  water  change  twice  a  week.  It  is  a  bit  overloaded,  that's  why  I  do  extra  WCs.

Do  you  think  its  time  to  rip  it  apart?  Any  chances  of  anaerobic  spots  in  the  substrate?  No  plants  though.

Sorry,  in  that  shock  missed  out  on  the  main  issue.  Epsom  salt  is  MgSO4  right?  I  have  loads  of  that  with  me.  will  do  that  first.  the  meds  are  on  their  way.

Ajay:  I'm  only  using  an  airstone  in  the  tub.  No  filtration.  I  plan  to  do  70%  water  changes  everyday.  I'm  hopeful.  Let's  see.

Ha  ha  thats  what  the  theory  says.  I  too  had  the  similar  condition  where  the  tank  was  at  top  condition  and  yet  a  goldy  had  dropsy..

@  agarwalajay  :  I  doubt  you  can  follow  the  same  medication  for  neons  as  they  are  very  sensitive  to  any  treatments.  If  it  is  a  Neon  Tetra  Disease  then  thats  uncurable  and  also  this  disease  spreads  fast  among  other  neons  so  it  would  be  good  if  you  separate  the  fish  asap..

Ok,  so  I've  added  epsom  salt.  Tetracyclin  will  be  here  in  some  time.

Yes,  I  understand  Ruchit.  Sometimes  you  get  rude  shocks!  So  here's  my  recent  history.  About  three  weeks  ago  I  set  aout  making  a  small  tank  from  a  ceramic  kitchen  sink.  Substrate,  plants  all  in.  Then  I  went  about  the  usual  routine  of  water  changes.  Yesterday,  I  wanted  to  introduce  some  mollies  into  the  tank.  I  aim  to  keep  that  tank  as  a  grow  out  for  plants.  So  no  fancy  fish  in  that.  while  I  was  trying  to  catch  these  fellows,  one  of  my  Bala  Sharks  freaks  out  and  takes  the  aerial  route  (IPL  fever).  So  frantically,   with  net  in  one  hand  I  try  to  slowly  catch  hold  of  this  fellow  with  the  other  hand.  Just  then  he  decides  to  leap  again  (from  the  floor)  and  lands  right  into  the  net.  I'm  pretty  pleased  with  this  fellow's  circus  stunts  and  I  go  to  release  him  in  the  tank.  When  I  do  that,  I  see  his  dorsal  fin  is  stuck  within  the  net.  So  now  I'm  trying  to  help  him  out  as  softly  as  i  can  and  he  keeps  wriggling  (all  under  water).  After  5  minutes  of  doing  all  this  I  just  decided  to  yank  him  off  the  net.   Crying or Very sad   Now  he's  got  only  half  a  fin!   Sad

So,  anyway,  I  sat  down  trying  to  calm  myself  down  from  all  this  adrenaline  rush.  Then  I  get  back  to  catching  the  mollies.  No  events  there.  Successfully  transferred  them.  Then  this  morning  I  get  up  and  head  straight  to  the  new  tub  to  see  how  the  mollies  are  doing.  I'm  unable  find  any!  And  then  I  find  them  hiding  under  some  stones  &  plants.  Phew!  Then  suddenly  a  few  dozen  ants  start  riding  up  my  leg  and  biting  me.  I  look  down  to  find  a  few  thousand  red  ants  all  over  the  floor  making  a  meal  of  a  white  molly  that  decided  to...  JUMP!

Then  the  insult  to  the  injury...  My  tiger  barb  looks  like  it  mutated  into  a  pearlscale  goldfish  overnight!

How  much  worse  can  this  get?

Ok,  today  is  the  fourth  day  of  treatment  (not  dosed  today  yet).  The  fish  is  still  alive,  but  the  bloat  is  still  there.  He  ate  today  after  3  days,  but  that  is  probably  because  of  extreme  hunger  (?).

 Here's  what  I'm  doing...
I  change  60%  -  70%  water  in  the  morning  and  add  epsom  salt  (2  tsp  for  25l).
In  the  evening  I  add  the  tetracycline.  I'm  not  sure  if  the  fish  should  be  kept  in  that  antibiotic  environment  all  the  time.  So  I  give  it  12hrs  with  the  meds  and  12  hours  in  just  water.  Of  course,  since  I  don't  change  the  entire  water,  there  will  be  a  level  of  tetracycline.  But  highly  diluted.  Am  I  doing  this  right?

These  are  some  things  I've  noticed...
As  soon  as  I  add  the  tetracycline  (dissolved  in  1  mug  of  water),  the  action  af  the  airstone  froths  up  the  water.  and  keeps  up  the  frothing  until  I  change  the  water.  Its  not  a  thick  froth  like  a  cappuccino.  it  is  just  localised  where  the  bubbles  from  the  air  stone  rise,  and  they  keep  bursting,  but  not  like  the  normal  air  bubbles  from  air  stone.  is  this  normal?

also,  I  noticed  since  yesterday,  the  water  is  turning  pink  just  like  a  very  diluted  PP  mix.  Now  the  problem  is,  the  bucket  I'm  using  is  pink.  The  capsule  has  pink  gelatin  (but  I  did  not  drop  the  capsule  in  the  water).  Can  anyone  throw  some  light  on  why  this  is  happening?
