These are attributes to an aquascape. Not a planted tank.
A planted tank is just that; a tank with plants.
If it is then more or less all tanks are planted tank. Then why we start to mention specifically “Planted tank”!! Even ten years back also people bought the tank, plants, fish, light, filter etc etc. But always we heard that he/she bought an Aquarium and we went to see the tank or aquarium.
Then suddenly how this "Planted Tank" or "Planted World" terminology came up!! Why !!
Even I also was hearing it last 6-7 years. Planted tank….Planted Tank…..Planted Tank….Why not an aquarium!!

Abhida, that is exactly what I'm trying to say. We are getting entangled in terminology.
Planted tank has always been around. I had planted tanks more than 18 years ago upto my college times. But I left the hobby and started up again 2 years ago. Only now do I even know anything about designing the tank to my taste. That designing is what we call aquascaping.
All I'm trying to say is that a tank with plants, whether is scaped or not is a planted tank.
let me put it this way: all tanks with plants are planted tanks but not all tanks with plants are aquascaped tanks.
I think that is the point you're trying to bring out through this thread. Am I thinking right?
In this specific case (the person's tank you're trying to debate), I will totally say that it is a planted tank, BUT it is not an aquascaped tank.

Exactly Athreyan. We are both saying the same but in a different manner.
What I mean to say what's a big deal to say any tank with plant is normal aquarium. As per my small knowledge only few years back this terminology came specially when Takashi Amano's creation comes to public. And I keeping plants in my tank since last 35 years. But I never
said I have a planted tank. I start to say planted tank since 2009 with the proper aquascaping and other things. Try to understand me what I mean to say.
Garothmaan is also right.
Previously we have two segments. Freshwater & Marine. Now another segment is added "Planted Tank". And if you watch the threads you can see lot of details like, Light, Substrate, plants, rocks, filtration etc. etc. People are thinking they are doing aquascaping but lot of cases they are only tank with plants which existing for a long long times. Nothing new and and we start giving our comments.
Here is I defer. Hope you understood what I mean………
And also if any tank is not aquascaped tank then why should I consider a planted tank !! It's a normal aquarium like millions of aquarium all over the world.

Abhi da..... All planted tank may not be aquascape.......
People in slums live in shacks and it is their home..... So a home may not be properly architectured and still it can be home.
As long as a tank has plants and can survive and grow in it..... It has every right to be called as planted.
Garothman you should be the first person to acknowledge it........ I have never seen an aquascape from you. All I saw is planted tanks. I am even not sure if they sustained.

I don't really think we are saying the same thing. You're saying that a tank can be called planted tank only when it is scaped. I'm saying that you can call any tank with enough plants to make an impact on that ecosystem a planted tank.
i agree that aquascaping is a relatively new term. But planted tanks have been around for much longer, but without any thought to aesthetics. now it is not a matter of when one 'heard' of the term.
talk about substrate, lights etc is also a recent development, I agree. But whether the tank is scaped or not, plants need nutrition. Of course, it is also new that we suplement nutrition. Earlier I just used to bury some plants in the sand and let the fish poo take care of nutrition. Now (as everything in the modern age) we want instant & fast results, so we dose fertilizers.
Plants really don't know if they have been arranged in an aesthetic manner or not. They just need nutrition.
So if you have a scaped tank or just threw in some plants, you still have to take care of them.

Abhis9 - I know you are a senior member and i dont mean any offence, but i think the discussion has deviated from the original topic - from clarification on the definition of a planted tank to whether or not a planted tank by definition must be an aquascape - and it has turned more into a personal issue. As for the original topic of the thread, i'd like to say that planted tanks dont only refer to high-tech, high budget aquariums which have been aquascaped. The category of planted tanks also includes low-tech tanks ( like mine) which only sustain plants without much external help such as ferts and CO2.

So in past I have kept densely planted tanks. I am not a very creative person so they wont fit the Dutch, Jungle and other aquascaping types that are out there.
Only low demanding, fast growing plants without CO2 and other stuff. But both the plants and fish were always healthy and properly taken care of.
Just because I am probably not the most creative person around, should I call them aquarium?
I own a Santro and Tendulkar owns a Ferrari.....In the end both are cars as they serve the same purpose. Just because, compared to Ferrari my car does not cost crores, it is not attention grabber, does not have the aesthetic value and fancy gadgets...should I call it a car or should I call it a piece of metal on four rubber tyres.
