Hello  friends,  I  need  your  suggestions  for  following   :-
 1)  How  to  identify  the  gender  of  betta  fish  ?
 2)  I  want  to  insert  an  Indian  almond  leave.  will  this  cause  any  undesired  effect  on  my  other  fish  in  that  tank  ?  Tank  size  24"L*12B*15H.  Tank  include  UG  filter  with  2  Goldfish  of  3/4''  size  and  2  shubunkin  fish  of  4/5''  approx  and  1  Betta  fish.
 3)  Betta  is  not  eating  food  properly  usually  it  crawls  at  the  bottom  so  it  does  not  getting  food.  I  am  feeding  my  fish  general  pellts  .  Can  i  feed  them  green  peas?  if  yes  then  dry  or  boiled?
   Please  help  me.

 Hi..
 1)  Gender  ::  use  this  link,  it  has  great  info  http://www.bettaterritory.nl/BT-AAB.htm

 2)  IAL  ::  Firstly  try  and  keep  your  betta  in  a  separate  tank,  a  6"  cube  would  suffice.  Bettas  do  not  like  strong  flow,  and  i  am  sure  you  must  be  using  a  filter.  IAL  is  beneficial  for  bettas  as  its  juice/extract  has  antibacterial  properties.
Either  you  can  drop  a  piece  of  dried  IAL  directly  in  the  betta  tank  and  let  it  release  the  extract,  or  you  can  usw=e  this  method  :  http://www.arofanatics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=332224

 3)  A  picture  would  help,  maybe  it  is  suffering  from  a  disease.  Bettas  will  not  eat  green  peas.  General  pellets  should  work,  but  do  vary  the  diet  as  much  as  possible  for  better  development.

 Cheers

Very  Small  tank  for  all  these.  Take  out  the  betta  and  give  him  a  separate  one  feet  tank.add  a  small  sponge  filter  for  him.
or  three  of  your  fish  will  die  very  soon.

I  am  not  hijacking  the  thread  but  I  am  keeping  2  bettas  (  one  CT  and  one  HM)  in  a  2ft  x  1ft  x  1ft  tank.  This  tank  is  divided  in  three  chambers  (  mistake  was  i  used  clear  glass)  so  unable  to  keep  3rd  betta  in  the  middle  section  because  3  of  them  will  be  flaring  and  gettng  stressed.
So  I  have  housed  RCS  and  guppys  in  the  middle  section.

No  fliter  and  no  pump  as  of  now  but  I  am  changing  50%  water  in  20days.  White  sand  are  the  substrate  n  betta  tanks  has  Anubias  tied  in  small  drift  woods.  Few  black  stones  are  thrown  in  their  tanks.

I  have  added  IAL  and  feeding  them  Hikari  Bio-Gold  5pellets/day  and  fasting  once  in  a  week.
Shelled  peas  once  in  a  week.  I  even  tried  garlic  soaked  pellets  and  they  like  it.

Only  no  filter,  pump  or  heater  because  in  Trivandrum  is  quite  hot..

Let  me  know  this  system  is  fine..

 Thanks

@Amazonian2010  :  How  big  is  your  bettas  ?  As  I  feel  5  pellets  are  very  less  for  an  grown  up  betta  .  My  betta  eats  10/12  pallets(hikari  betta  bio-gold)  easily  .  That  too  I  give  2  time  a  day  .

@kapa  :  Hikari  Betta  biogold  is  the  bast  food  I  came  across  .  Is  your  betta  not  eating  at  all  ?  You  mentioned  not  eating  properly  ...it  is  not  so  clear  about  your  betta  .  In  case  you  think  your  betta  is  sick  please  follow  as  Asish  and  Deepak  suggested  you  .

5  Pellets  are  more  than  enough  for  a  betta  if  you  are  not  conditioning  them  for  breeding.
Food  quantity  equal  to  the  eye  of  a  fish,  for  a  fully  grown  one,  is  enough  in  proportion  for  a  fresh  water  fish  to  sustain  a  healthy  life.
Bettas  have  the  habit  of  eating  as  much  as  possible  till  they  bloat  and  stress  their  air  sack.

I  will  post  some  snaps  soon  or  videos  may  be..My  fishes  are  1  to  1.5inch  in  length.  They  are  adults  and  I  have  no  intention  to  breed  them  now  (due  to  space  constrain).  Shall  I  increase  the  food  by  another  two  pellets?

One  point  I  want  to  make  here  they  are  eating  and  occasionally  flaring  while  looking  at  the  guppies  in  the  middle  section..but  is  there  anything  else  I  can  do  to  make  them  100%  fit?  Temp  is  quite  ok  here  so  not  using  thermometer  or  heater  but  it  seems  they  like  the  40watt  bulb  when  I  switched  it  on..

Any  more  food  suggestions?  apart  from  Hikari  bio,  I  use  sometimes  frozen  blood  worms  from  Taiyo. Can  you  suggest  some  live  food?  I  am  scared  to  expose  them  to  any  kind  of  natural  food  due  to  infection.

Can  they  eat  grindle  worms?how  do  i  feed  them?

 Thanks

Yes  they  can  eat  grindle  worms  if  they  please.
Bettas  are  picky,  try  everything  possible  Smile
My  bettas  used  to  love  live  mosquitoes!   Very Happy
One  more  thing  give  regular  exercise  to  your  betta's.
 Are  they  making  bubble  nests?
If  they're  then  it  shows  they  are  happy  and  content.  Also,  do  get  a  female  betta  in  their  tanks  occasionally  to  tease  them  and  feel  active.  Its  good  to  know  that  your  betta's  are  active  and  flaring.

Thanx  to  everyone  guys.  Unfortunately  my  betta  is  not  eating  even  single  pellets.  sometimes  she  grabs  it  in  her  mouth  &  instantly  throws  it  out, why  she  doing  so?  what  can  i  do?  What  is  other  food  for  feeding  betta  except  blood  worms  .  Because  blood  worms  are  unavailable  in  LFS.  Tell  me  some  domestic  food;  if  any.  And  i  will  separate  it  within  4/5  days.

@kapa  :  What  is  the  water  temperature   ?  Is  your  betta  flaring  properly  ?  Is  it  active  or  dull  ?  Can  you  observe  closely  to  see  if  the  fins  are  clamped  (clamp  fin,  The  fins  will  stick  and  the  betta  can't  flair  properly)  ?  The  clamp  fin  is  usually  called  as  sticky  fin  also  .  You  can  search  in  Google  about  this  .  May  be  these  information  will  help  experts  to  advice  you  .  :)

I  am  not  an  expert  to  advise  over  this  .  I  guess  these  may  be  one  of  the  reason  ,  why  your  betta  is  not  eating  .

Take  your  betta  out  of  the  main  tank.
Put  him  in  a  smaller  container  maybe  a  bowl  or  LARGE  jar.
Add  a  piece  of  dried  almond  leaf.
Keep  it  in  a  warm  location
Change  5%  water  daily  with  stored  water
Feed  once  a  day  if  he  eats  else  remove  food  at  once.

Try  giving  him  one  or  two  mosquito  larvae  that  you  can  collect  from  any  stagnant  water  body.

Keeping  a  betta  with  goldfish  or  any  other  fish  usually  ends  in  disaster.  They  are  best  kept  individually  in  reasonably  sized  tanks.  A  one  foot  tak  is  ideal.

Most  betta  illness  can  be  cured  by  changing  water  regularly,  raising  temperature  and  use  of  almond  leaf  and  low  feeding.

 Regards,
 Vebkat

I  would  suggest  you  separate  it  ASAP.
 Deworm  it.
Do  not  feed  it  for  5  days  atleast.
And  update  us  with  its  condition.  Please  post  a  latest  pic.
