 Hi  Friends,

I  am  into  fish  keeping  from  more  than  10  years  and  my  latest  interest  is  on  setting  up  a  all  new  Cichild  tank.  Please  see  my  tank  details  below  and  kindly  advice  me  on  the  questions  asked.

 Tank  Size  -  72inches(L)  X  18inches(W)  X  24  inches(H)
 Filter  =  EHEIM  classic  600L
Aquarium  setup  completed  by  rocks/pebbles  with  lots  of  hiding  places.

 Questions:

 1)  From  the  following  list  of  fishes  please  advice  me  on  the  compatibility  and  kindly  remove  the  inappropriate  fish/group  from  the  list.
 2)  Please  check  the  tank  size  mentioned  above  and  let  me  know  if  the  number  of  pairs  i  am  planning  to  add  will  be  overstock.  If  yes  please  advice  me  on  the  number  of  pairs  which  is  idle  to  keep  in  my  tank.

 3)  Any  good/recommended  place/shop  in  Bangalore  to  buy  these  Cichlids  ?

Fish  list  made  with  my  basic  knowledge  on  Cichilds.

 Firemouth  -  2  Pairs
 Green  Terror  -  Pairs
 Jaguar  cichlid  -  2  Pairs
Electric  Blue  Johannii  -  3  Pairs
Electric  Yellow  Lab  -  3  Pairs
 White  Morph  -  3  Pairs
 Auratus  Cichlid  -  3  Pairs
Convict  Cichlid  Black  stripes  -  1  Pair
Albino  Convict  Cichlid  -  1  Pair
 Severums  -  2  Pairs
 Oscar  -  1  Pair
 Silver  Dollar  -  3  Pairs
 Tinfoil  barbs  -  3  Pairs
 Pleco  -  1

 Thanks  in  advance

 Anand

Hmm  so  the  piranha  guy  is  venturing  into  the  domain  of  cichlids..Good  to  hear...I  have  kept  all  the  cichlids  mentioned  above  and  i  guess  i  would  be  able  to  guide  u  according  to  my  knowledge  and  experience.

Following  ones  can  be  kept  together  -
 Firemouth
 Green  terror
 Severums

 (Malawi  group)
 Electric  blue  johanni
 Melanochromis  Auratus
 Electric  Yellow  Lab
 White  Morph

Convicts  are  the  most  aggressive  of  the  lot. These  buggas  will  drive  the  other  tank  mates  crazy.  And  the  most  exciting  part  comes  when  they  breed. And  trust  me,  they  breed  like  pigs.  Your  whole  tank  would  be  transformed  into  a  battleground.  I  have  seen  medium  sized  convicts  defend  their  young  against  cichlids  twice  their  size.  So  its  up  to  you  whether  you  want  to  keep  them  or  no.  Electric  blue  and  auratus  are  aggressive  too  but  since  they  belong  to  same  group  as  the  other  two,  they  can  be  kept  together.  Jaguar  is  another  fierce  competitor  too.  Had  kept  a  solo  juvenile  in  a  single  tank  for  some  time.  Had  to  get  rid  of  it  eventually  due  to  lack  of  space.

The  other  fishes  viz.  Silver  Dollar,  Tinfoil  barbs  and  Pleco  can  be  kept  together. They  are  not  compatible  with  cichilds  i  must  admit  but  then  again  you  can  take  your  chances.  Dollars  and  tinfoils  are  fast  moving  and  hence  they  might  somehow  escape  the  cichlids  only  for  some  time  tough.

I  havent  kept  Oscars  with  cichlids  so  i  cant  adivice  you.  They  grow  really  quick  and  unless  you  have  a  monster  tank  for  them  ready,  disposing  them  off  is  the  only  option  left  with  you.

Just  keep  in  mind  that  you  have  an  efficient  filtration  system.  Cichlids  along  with  Oscars  need  clean  water.   The  malawi  group  mentioned  above  need  alkaline  water.  Crushed  corals  in  your  tank  as  substrate  would  do  the  trick.

Hope  the  above  info  helps  you.  Wait  for  the  experts  to  comment.  I  have  adviced  you  as  per  my  knowledge.  I  am  still  in  the  learning  phase.

Best  of  luck  and  keep  us  posted  !

I'll  probably  remove  the  Jaguar  Cichlids,  Oscars  for  the  size  and  aggression  and  also  the  tinfoil  barbs  for  the  size

add  6  more  silver  dollars  and  a  large  school  of  red  eye  tetra  or  the  orange/Albino  variant  of  the  Beunos  Aires  Tetra

you  could  also  go  for  a  lot  of  loaches  to  replace  the  Pleco..

 All  the  Best,
 Jithin

Thanks  a  ton  'hrishi007'  and  'Jithin'  for  such  a  detailed  response.  Some  more  questions..

 1)   Can  i  keep  3-4  Pairs  of  Clown  loaches  in  a  Cichild  tank  ?
 2)   Will  it  be  a  serious  issue  if  i  keep  Malawi  group  Cichilds  along  with  other  Cichilds  mentioned  in  my  list  (Electric  blue  johanni/Electric  Yellow  Lab).  I  am  talking  about  health  issues  here  and  not  about  the  aggression.

 Thanks,

 Anand

 Hi  Anand,
 Good  luck  on  your  venture.
My  2  cents  for  your  plan  in  fishy  language

 1)  You  are  overloaded  2)  You  are  overloaded

Lets  look  at  the  total  no  of  fishes  in  your  tank
59  fishes  in  your  7  footer.
Sorry  to  tell  you  ,  disaster  in  the  making.
You  are  way  off  your  scale  on  bio  load  too.

You  are  mixing  Africans  and  Americans  here  ,  which  bring  in  their  own  agression...and  health  issues  will  be  very  evident  and  evenly  across  your  tank.
First  thing  you  will  stare  at  is  1)  Stress  and  related  illness  2)  High  level  of  Nitrates  (  Nitrogen  cycle  fluctuation  )  3)  Agression  during  breeding  and  for  hiding  spots
 4)  Ripped  fins  and  injury.

Oscars  and  Jaguars  will  have  a  go  at  the  silver  dollars  and  barbs  first,  when  done  ,  they  will  go  at  the  others  in  your  list.
 Your  filtation  is  not  sufficient.
PLease  tell  us  about  your  water  change  schedule.
Call  me  if  you  need  to  discuss  in  detail.
