 i  made  all  the  required  connections  and  it  worked  for  few  seconds  too,  but  water  was  leaking  from  the  gap  at  the  holes  for  the  inlet  and  outlet  pvc  on  the  lid  and  also  the  lid  of  the  plastic  container  came  open  due  to  the  water  pressure,

 what  should  i  do  to
 1)  prevent  lid  from  opening  up  ?  (is  there  any  way  or  should  i  abandon  this  container  and  try  the  large  diameter  pvc)
 2)prevent  leaking  from  the  gap  at  the  holes  for  the  inlet  and  outlet  pvc?

 use  silicone  to  seal  the  jointing  point  of  the  lid  &  pipes.  that  should  take  care  of  your  leaks.

 as  for  the  top  opening  up,  you  will  have  to  seal  the  top.  But  that  would  be  impractical  because  everytime  you  want  to  clean  your  filter.  you'd  have  to  take  off  the  seal  &  reseal  it  when  you're  done.  IMO  you  must  switch  to  a  container  with  a  screw  on  lid.  Or  if  you  can  find  one  with  a  rubber  gasket  that  will  be  even  better.  for  screw  on  lids,  I  would  recommend  that  you  use  a  good  coating  of  vaseline  jelly  (petroleum  jelly),  to  make  it  leak  proof.

 All  that  said,  i  think  DIY  canisters  are  not  worthwhile.  Its  a  lot  of  headache  to  keep  them  leak  proof.  Nowadays  we  get  some  cheap  canister  filters  that  do  a  good  job.  They'd  probably  cost  a  couple  of  hundreds  more  than  a  DIY,  but  save  a  lot  of  frustration.  The  only  time  I'd  do  a  diy  filter  is  if  I  wanted  a  sump  or  a  wet/dry  trickle  filter.  But  that's  just  my  opinion.  Please  don't  be  discouraged.  I'm  just  pointing  at  the  pros  &  cons.

 Waseem..
 These  buckets  can't  handle  the  pressure  of  the  power  head,  they  will  deform  under  this  kind  of  pressure.  hence  the  lid  is  coming  off.
 And  you  can't  just  poke  the  pipes  into  the  lid,  like  you  have  done..  you  need  to  use  the  bulkheads  (nipples  in  local  lingo)  to  secure  the  inlet  and  outlet  of  water.
 The  entire  container  must  be  water  tight  except  for  the  two  inlet  and  outlet  pipes,  even  the  pump  wiring  out  let  must  be  sealed  off..
 I  am  afraid  your  design  will  not  work..  think  of  stronger  containers,  and  which  has  a  lid  or  cap  which  can  be  mechanically  fastened  to  the  body.  better  if  the  lid  is  water  proof.

 @athreyan   nidhi
 thank  you  very  much  fot  the  reply,  i  really  liked  this  container  as  it  is  transparent  Sad  ,  guess  ill  try  hamzas  method  of  large  diameter  pvc  with  acrylic  hood,  i  found  some  shops  selling  acrylic  sheets  and  laser  cutting(hope  its  not  costly)I  dont  want  to  spend  too  much  money  again  on  a  quality  filter  as  my  HOB  filter  motor  got  burned  while  i  was  away  from  home
 and  ill  search  for  the  nipples.

 HURRAY  I  HAVE  SUCCESSFULLY  MADE  A  CANNISTER  FILTER(just  a  few  small  leaks  to  be  fixed)  Cheering

 the  sucking  tube  sucking  the  water

 to  make  the  round  surfaced  cap  not  fall  down  i  got  this  mug  to  perfectly  fit..looks  funny  but  its  stable  Chuckle

 i  would  like  to  thank  hamza.  aquamad,  bpldude,imrandayatar  and  lots  of  other  people  who  i  have  never  spoken  to  nor  met  but  whose  posts  i  went  through  to  make  this  cannister  filter  possible,and  athreyan,  nidhi  for  giving  me  valuable  advice...  i  am  very  happy  now  that  all  my  work  has  paid  off,  clear  water  is  coming  through  the  outlet,  and  most  importantly  i  learned  a  lot  of  new  things  during  this  experience...  (i  still  have  to  fix  3  small  leaks,  but  that  i  know  that  it  can  be  easily  fixed  inshaallah)....

 So,  Waseem  has  taste  of  success  at  last..  Clapping
 but  still  have  plenty  of  room  for  improvement  on  the  design.
 Especially  the  outlet  pipe  work  needs  some  more  length,  the  suction  pipe  needs  protection  at  the  end  so  that  fishes  don't  get  sucked  in  to  the  filter.

 nice  work!

 As  Nidhi  said,  there's  scope  for  improvement.  i  think  you  should  make  the  inlet  &  outlet  jointing  using  bulkheads.  It  gives  consistent  reliability.  Believe  me,  a  flooded  house  is  a  pain  in  the  @#$*.  also,  I  don't  think  you  need  to  have  PVC  all  the  way.  You  can  attach  a  hose  (just  like  you've  done  for  the  inlet),  and  have  a  curved  pipe  right  at  the  end  for  the  outlet.  This  will  give  you  some  flexibility  to  move  the  filter  around  a  bit.
 Why  do  you  have  2  ball  valves?  any  specific  advantage  of  having  two  over  one?

   Thumb Up

 @radjanair
 thanks

 @athreyan
 thanks,  when  I  have  to  clean  the  filter,  I  can  separate  the  place  between  2  ball  valves,  so  that  I  don't  have  to  suck  water  for  priming  each  time(at  least  thats  the  idea)...I'm  planing  to  fit  an  hose  for  the  outlet
