 Hey  Experts  !!!

I  am  six  months  old  in  the  planted  aquarium  hobby...
I  have  a  tank  of  165  litres  with  dimensions  of  3x1x2(LxWxH).
Currently  I  have  a  UPS  fan  and  Two  36  watts  PL-Ls  ,  One  20  watts  T5  for  the  lighting  in  my  hood  with  the  schedule  of  9.00am  -3.00pm  and  7.00pm-11.00  pm.
The  plants  are  growing  well  and  the  fishes, shrimps  are  happliy  settled.

I  came  across  a  few  readings  saying  that  keeping  different  coloured  tubelights  especially  PINK  helps  red  coloured
plants  grow  well  by  means  of  getting  good  colour.

I  have  attached  an  image  for  your  information.  Please  let  me  know  if  my  current  setup  would  be  worth  a  change  and
whether  my  fishes  shall  be  stressing  etc,,  Just  need  your  guidance  and  feedback  for  the  following  thought  of  mine
 for  MY  NEW  HOOD...

 01)  TWO  CHINESE  PINK  TUBES  -2  feet  (suggest  if  any  other) 9.00am-12.15pm
 02)  TWO  36  watts  PL-Ls  6500  k  Daylight  -Osram  Brand 12.00pm-4.15pm
 03)  TWO  20  watts  T5  Warm  White  -Osram  Brand 4.00pm-7.15pm
 04)  TWO  CHINESE  BLUE  TUBES  -2  feet(suggest  if  any  other) 7.00pm-10.00pm
 05)  FOUR  CHINESE  Moonlight  LED's  in  all  four  corners. 7.00pm-10.00pm
 06)  UPS  Fan  in  the  centre   24  hrs.

 Excitedly  waiting  for  your  feedback.

 Regards

 Sunny

I  really  doubt  that  pink  lights  promotes  plant  growth  and  also  you  do  not  need  blue  tubes.  A  combination  of  white  and  warm  is  more  than  enough  or  only  white.  Apart  from  light,  good  amount  of  co2  and  fertilizers  is  also  required.

 01)  TWO  CHINESE  PINK  TUBES,  04)  TWO  CHINESE  BLUE  TUBES,  and  05)  FOUR  CHINESE  Moonlight  LED's:  Its  not  going  to  help  you  anyway  in  growing  plants.  Do  read  on  the  required  spectrum  for  growing  plants.  You  are  just  wasting  current  by  using  these  tube  lights  in  your  tank.  Utter  waste  of  energy...  Thumb Down   Thumb Down   Thumb Down

 +1  above
Also,  why  all  this  complication  with  timing?  You  have  to  keep  the  light  constant  for  a  good  length  of  time.  If  you  want  (and  have  the  cash  to  spare),  you  can  install  a  sunrise/sunset  effect  controller,  so  that  the  light  increases  gradually  &  fades  gradually.  But  that  is  not  at  all  essential.  But  keeping  all  these  varied  timings  is  going  to  cause  a  load  of  algae  issues.  Also,  the  plants  will  not  be  able  to  use  the  light  efficiently.  keep  a  set  time  for  lights  on  &  lights  off.  It  can  be  for  a  period  of  7  to  10  hrs  depending  on  your  other  parameters.  That's  all!  Simple!

Dont  complicate  things  unnecessarily  for  yourself  and  your  plants  too.  If  you  really  want  a  good  mixed  spectrum  just  add  one  4200K  and  one  8000/10000K  tube  for  every  2  6500K  tubes  you  have  and  its  more  than  enough.

Also  the  light  gap  shouldnt  be  more  than  one  hour  so  revise  your  current  schedule

I  have  never  heard  anyone  using  pink  tubes  for  their  plant  tank  !  You  can  use  8-10hrs  of  light.

The  pink  tubes  are  available  in  Hitachi  brand.  They  are  T8  tubes  and  come  in  all  lengths.  They  are  usually  used  with  fish-only  tanks,  especially  goldfish,  as  they  make  the  fish  appear  nice.

In  theory,  the  spectrum  emitted  from  these  tubes  are  good  for  plants,  as  plants  use  up  blue,  purple  &  red  radiation  from  light.  These  tubes  are  exactly  in  that  spectrum.  But  the  whole  point  of  keeping  an  aquarium  at  home  is  for  us  to  enjoy  the  sight.  These  light  from  these  tubes  makes  a  planted  tank  look  very  unappealing.  Whereas,  daylight  tubes  make  the  tank  appear  beautiful,  and  also  contain  the  spectrum  required  for  the  plants'  photosynthesis.  So  that's  a  double  whammy!

If  you  use  proper  6500K  tubes  with  good  spikes  at  the  blue  &  red  spectra,  and  a  smaller  spike  at  green  spectrum,  it  will  be  more  than  enough  for  your  plants.  And  it  will  make  your  tank  look  lush  &  nice.

Another  point  being,  these  pink  tubes  are  available  only  in  T8  size.  These  do  not  have  much  power  and  also  not  much  penetration  through  water.  So  you'll  have  to  use  more  of  them  to  achieve  light  levels,  and  your  plants  will  'look'  dull  &  lifeless.  By  look  I  mean  only  look.  They  will  be  healthy  though.

As  everyone  suggests,  use  daylight  spectrum  lights.

As  for  your  query  on  photo  period,  you  will  have  to  give  us  full  tank  specs  to  get  to  a  number.  Important  things  being,  what  plants  you're  gonna  keep,  CO2,  substrate,  fertilization,  tank  size.
