 Hi  everyone,

I  am  extremely  happy  to  inform  you  that  my  Betta  has  spawned  after  more  than  48  hours  of  being  in  the  tank.  The  male  was  chasing  the  female  for  the  past  2  days,  but  finally  she  had  to  give  in  after  a  few  nipped  fins.  I  was  lucky  enough  to  watch  the  courtship  this  morning.  Wow,  what  an  amazing  sight.  The  male  wrapped  himself  around  the  female  for  more  than  about  20  times  in  1  hour.  The  female  started  releasing  eggs  only  after  a  few  hugs.  The  male  very  carefully  collected  all  the  eggs  and  placed  it  in  the  bubble  nest.

Water  temperature  during  courtship  =  24  deg  C
 Ph  =  6.5
Time  =  around  7:30  am  to  8:45  am

I  guess  the  egg  count  would  be  in  the  range  of  a  couple  of  hundreds.

I  have  now  separated  the  female  from  the  tank  in  an  individual  bowl  lightly  dozed  with  methyl  blue.  There  were  a  few  queries  that  came  to  my  mind  upon  experiencing  this:

 1.  How  would  you  know  that  the  female  has  completely  released  all  the  eggs?
 2.  Should  I  use  a  tank  heater  to  maintain  the  temperature  at  a  certain  degree  or  should  I  keep  the  tank  temperature  at  any  constant  optimal  condition  for  better  hatching  and  fry  growth?
 3.  How  many  days  should  I  feed  Microworms  to  the  fry?
 4.  I  have  no  access  to  Brine  shrimp.  Can  anyone  suggest  me  an  alternative  to  BBS  for  feeding  the  fry?
 5.  How  long  will  it  take  the  SAME  female  to  bear  eggs  for  next  spawning?
 6.  How  long  will  it  take  the  SAME  Male  to  be  ready  for  the  next  courtship?
 7.  Should  I  feed  my  male  now,  he  will  be  in  the  tank  for  the  next  3  more  days  until  the  eggs  hatch.  This  means  the  male  will  be  in  the  tank  unfed  for  about  6  days.  Is  this  recommended?  I  did  condition  the  male  with  live  feed  for  more  than  2  weeks,  prior  to  spawning.
 8.  Can  I  or  should  I  use  methyl  Blue  in  the  fry  tank  to  avoid  any  bacterial  bloom?  If  yes,  in  what  quantity?

I  would  greatly  appreciate  any  recommendations  from  veteran  betta  breeders  to  assist  me  with  my  queries  above.

 Thanks  very  much  in  advance.

 Best  regards,

 Tony

 Congrats  Tony  Smile
 Here  are  your  answers.
 1)  you  will  notice  females  tummy  is  flat.  And  male  is  chasing  her  away  from  nest.  And  tending  the  nest  alone.
 2)  heater  yes  27  degrees.
 3)  first  three  to  four  days  no  feeding  after  that  start  Infusurya  for  three  days  then  start  microworms..  when  they  are  15  days  old  start  BBS.
 4)  you  can  try  Moina  filtered  through  dapnea  net.
 5)  both  male  and  female  needs  20  days  rest  after  a  good  spawn.
 6)20  days.
 7)  feed  unless  he  looks  tired.  Try  dropping  a  single  worm  in  front  of  his  nose.  If  he  eats  then  drop  another.  Or  else  dont  feed.  Reduce  the  water  level  to  4  inches.  Eggs  will  hatch  Tomorrow.
Cool  yes  add  blue  liquid.  Make  the  water  sky  blue.
   Clapping   make  a  spawn  log.

 Today's  update.  07/09/2013

The  betta  eggs  have  hatched  and  my  breeding  tank  is  full  of  frys,  when  I  checked  at  06:30am  this  morning.  Some  of  the  newly  hatched  keep  falling  down,  but  the  male  is  extra  cautious/caring  and  puts  them  all  back  in  the  bubble  nest.  I  think  some  frys  are  dead,  as  they  are  lying  in  the  bottom  of  the  tank  motionless,  still  the  male  betta  picks  them  all  up  and  puts  them  in  the  nest,  may  be  I  am  wrong.  Is  this  how  they  are  or  are  they  really  dead?

The  temperature  is  set  at  a  constant  25  Deg  C.  and  as  per  DeepakG's  recommendation  I  have  added  Methyl  Blue  to  the  water  before  the  fry  hatched.  The  water  level  is  around  5"  with  zero  filtration.  My  microworm  culture  is  blooming  as  well.

Now,  waiting  for  the  fry  to  start  swimming  horizontally  to  start  feeding  them  and  remove  the  daddy!.

Thanks  guys  for  your  support  and  help  so  far.  Much  appreciated.

 Best  regards,

 Tony

 Update  09/09/2013
 Temp:  25.7  Deg  C

I  removed  the  male  betta  from  the  breeding  tank  at  around  10AM  this  morning.
I  noticed  the  fry  were  swimming  horizontally.  I  have  also  introduced  3  small  apple  snails  to  clean  up  the  debris  and  dead  fry  sedimented  at  the  bottom  of  the  tank.

I  have  also  given  a  slight  doze  of  microworm  water  to  the  tank.

I  have  a  query  guys,  does  introducing  baby  apple  snails  trouble  the  fry  in  any  way?  I  the  fry  are  swimming  horizontally  at  lightning  speed,  so  i  think  they  can  take  care  of  themselves.

I  have  also  introduced  mild  lighting  to  the  tank  at  nights.

Any  suggestions  in  this  regard  would  be  much  appreciated.

 THanks,

 Tony

 Regarding  apple  snails..
   1)  cleans  up  tank  bottom  ..  eats  dead  fry,  uneaten  food,  prevents  fungul  activities.
 2)  their  digestive  system  is  week  so  their  poo  contains  undigested  food  which  helps  Infusuryan  growth...  which  is  good  food  for  fry.
 3)  it  polishes  the  tank  bottom  which  prevents  fry  anal  fin  rot.  Betta  fry  tend  to  go  down  the  rest  and  to  eat  microworms..   that's  when  the  anal  fin  which  touches  the  bottom  get  infected.
 Only   Draw  back  ..
 1)  big  apple  snails  falls  down  from  the  wall  very  fast..  that's  why  small  apple  snails  are  good..
I  would  say  keep  only  two  Small  snails.
Don't  feed  too  much  ..  get  some  BBS  ..they  will  be  ready  for  BBS  very  soon.

 Hi  Deepakg,

Thanks  very  much  for  your  valuable  reply.  Much  appreciated.  I  was  simply  using  my  instincts  introducing  3  baby  apple  snails.  They  seem  to  be  doing  a  good  job  and  your  reply  supports  that.

With  regard  to  BBS,  I  have  no  access  to  them  just  yet.  I  have  given  the  fry  a  few  doses  of  microworm  today.  Can  you  suggest  any  other  alternative  to  BBS,  I  am  planning  to  use  egg  yolk  may  be  after  10  days  in  moderation  for  the  fry  growth.

Any  other  recommendation  to  source  BBS  or  get  them  cheap?

Remember,  I  am  not  a  commercial  breeder.

 Cheers,

 Tony

There  are  small  packs  of  BBS  available  in  market  with  is  enough  to  raise  one  batch  of  Betta  spawn  till  they  start  on  Moina.  Which  is  cheap  enough  on  comparison  to  other  nutrition..  nothing  can  beat  BBS  in  term  of  nutrition  and  safety.  That's  why  most  breeders  use  that  as  primary  raising  fry  food.
Their  are  other  alternatives  which  can  be  used  but  Betta  fry  are  really  stuborn  and  will  not  eat  anything  accept  moving  critters.
Egg  is  no  doubt  a  great  food.  But  it  will  rot  the  water.
Moina  is  good  but  might  chock  the  fry  if  you  are  not  careful  enough  to  filter  them.  I  would  suggest  you  to  get  the  smallest  pack  of  BBS  and  raise  them  till  they  accept  the  other  supliments.
Later  when  time  comes  I  will  provide  you  info  on  how  to  make  diy
 Betta  food.

Where  can  I  source  moina  by  the  way?

 Hi  Deepakg,

My  water  is  a  bit  cloudy  now.  I  have  a  biofilter,  but  it  is  now  floating  in  the  water?  Not  sure  what  happened?   I  have  not  turned  the  biofilter  on  just  yet.  How  can  I  make  it  sink  to  the  bottom  of  the  tank?

 cheers,

 Tony
