Hi  All,

Need  help..  I  heard  that  tetras  are  schooling  fish..  but  it  does  not  seem  to  be  happening  inside  my  tank.

they  are  fighting  with  each  other.   earlier  i  thought  that  they  may  be  attacking  one  particular  fish  but  this  is  not  the  case..  few  fish  have  become  territorial   and  allowing  one  fish  to  stay  or  swim  in  that  area..

my  tank  is  3  weeks  old

please  help..  is  it  a  stress  issue  or  space  issue?

 my  tank  is  18LX18WX15H

For  all  I  know,  it  is  "playful"  chasing  around  these  fish  do,  unlike  other  aggressive  fish.  THey  are  pretty  peaceful  with  each  other  when  in  group.  feeding  them  3-4  times  a  day  (little  qty)  might  help  I  feel.

 Cheers,

please  help!!  are  they  suffering  from  any  disease  NTD?  or  it  is  a  gender  equation  issue?

I  am  planning  to  introduce  6  Cardinal  and  10  Shrimps(to  control  brown  algae)  ..  will  that  cause  any  issue?

u  can  introduce  Nerite  snails  or  Glut  dosing  to  control  brown  algae
either  the  light+CO2  Combination  isn't  balanced  or  excessive  feeding  is  reason  for  brown  algae(Personal  experience)

Can  you  introduce  more  neons  and  check?  Tetras  are  known  for  nipping  and  chasing  each  other.  But  while  in  large  numbers,  they  should  not  do  it  for  long  time.  I  know  people  who  have  kept  20-30  neons  and  they  fared  pretty  well.  Space  might  be  an  issue  to  introduce  more,  I  think.  Cherry  barbs  fare  really  well  too.  Check  them  if  you  ever  want  to  give  away  neons  and  go  for  alternative  for  your  planted  tank.

 Cheers.

Tetras  shoal  when  they  feel  they  are  in  danger  or  the  environment  is  new..  once  they  settle  down  and  feel  that  there  is  no  treat  for  them,  then  they  start  their  own  territory  and  mildly  defend  it..  which  can  be  seen  as  little  quarrels.  But  this  is  not  a  serious  matter,  the  chasing  lasts  only  till  the  intruder  is  out  of  the  territory.

thanks  all  for  your  input..  looking  like  they  are  now  building  territories,  few  are  bonding  well,  few  are  getting  pushed  out  of  their  locations.  I  have  not  seen  any  physical  abuse  so  far..

I  am  planning  to  introduce  shrimp  to  control  brown  algae..  and  yes..  my  CO2  and  lighting  is  not  accurate  everyday,  hence  I  suspect  this  is  the  issue.(  i  will  buy  timer  for  light  soon).

I  might  introduce  6  more  neon  but  I  guess  this  will  fully  load  the  tank.

 Thanks

This  is  not  an  issue  at  all.  All  tetras  do  that,  they  are  just  playful  and  no  serious  issues  at  all.  I  would  say  bump  the  numbers  to  15-20  it  will  be  fun  and  they  will  feel  more  secured.

Couple  of  things  as  someone  mentioned,  they  are  just  playful  and  they  might  be  fighting  to  mate  with  a  female  tetra  this  is  complete  normal.

I  have   21  neon  tetras,  99%  of  the  day  these  guys  do  this  and  no  harm  or  fin  nipping  I  never  noticed.  At  times  they  do  it  for  breeding.  Check  if  any  of  the  females  are  bloated

Yupp..   Very Happy  .  so  happy  with  these  reply.

As  per  suggestion  I  have  bump  up  the  number  17  Neon  now  and  they  are  all  playful..  have  added  10  RCS  +  2  Ottos  to  take  house  keeping  charge..  added  air  pump  to  increase  water  flow  and  increase  the  filtration  speed.

so  looks  like  all  settled  now..  Thank  you  all
