 Hi,

Anybody  have  experience  in  using  the  ion  exchange  resin  beads  in  their  tanks?
Have  any  body  used  this  material  for  reducing  the  hardness  of  the  water.

I  got  some  sample  from  my  friend  and  want  to  try  it  out  in  my  planted  tank.  Wanted  to  know  if  this  would  have  any  ill-effects  in  the  planted  tank.

Also  need  information  on  how  to  re-charge  these  beads.

Planning  to  put  them  in  the  nylon  bag  and  keep  it  inside  the  canister  filter.  If  this  is  efficient,  would  build  a  dedicated  reactor  for  this...   Smile

I  have  used  water  softener  from  Azoo  (yellow  coloured  beads),  they  work  good  but  I  found  peat  moss  to  be  more  efficient.  Only  drawback  with  peat  moss  is  that  it  tans  the  water  pretty  bad  during  its  initial  use.

When  the  colour  of  the  beads  turn  brown  simply  remove  and  wash  with  tap  water  and  dry,  it  turn  back  yellow  and  ready  to  be  used  again.

 My  friend  shared  this  link.

 Re-charging  the  ion  exchange  beads.

The  process  seems  to  be  very  long.  Will  have  to  find  out  to  source  the  raw  materials  used  to  recharge  the  beads.

 Hi  Shelly,

I  found  another  easier  way  using  salt,  I  have  done  some  research  on  this  as  well  &  many  have  suggested  using  common  salt  i.e  without  Iodine.  check  this  link  please  http://www.ehow.com/how_8087248_regenerate-ion-exchange-resin.html

 Cheers,
 Dj

 @  Dheeraj,

I  tried  doing  the  recharge  with  the  salt  which  is  there  in  the  kitchen.  Will  keep  the  beads  in  the  canister  filter  today.

Will  measure  the  TDS  first  and  then  take  the  test  on  everyday  to  find  the  difference  in  the  tds  after  introducing  the  ion  exchange  beads.
