 Hi  guys,

Was  thinking  to  get  a  small  tank  for  my  desk,  a  small  pico  kind  of  cube  or  equivalent.

So  does  anyone  have  one  such  thing?  even  a  vase  or  jar  with  life  will  do,  and  I  actually  just  want  to  know  the  basics  you  follow.

 Like,
 1.  Water  changes
 2.  Lights  yes  or  no
 3.  Plants  yes  or  no
 4.  Ferts  yes  or  no(I  know  am  asking  too  much)
 5.  Tank/container  size
 6.  Any  fish/snail/shrimp

Please  feel  free  to  suggest  whats  on  your  mind,  even  if  you  dont  own  one.  It  will  help  me  plan  one.

 Thanks  in  anticipation.  Thumb Up

 Sai,
I  think  you  can  buy  6",  9"  or  12"  cubes,  if  not  readily  available..  you  can  order  to  make  one  from  an  LFS  or  DIY  one  yourself.  some  Chinese  tanks  are  also  available.  Water  changes  can  be  as  simple  as  topping  up  the  evaporated  water.  if  your  office  is  well  lit  then  no  need  for  a  lighting  if  you  go  for  some  ferns  and  mosses.  Go  for  a  commercial  substrate,  you  wont  have  to  dose  ferts  if  you  do  so.  And  finally  I  would  suggest  you  to  go  for  only  shrimps.

Can  we  suggest  Betta's  in  the  same  Tank  configuration  ?  They  wouldnt  need  much  space  to  move  around  ..
Two  males  in  a  partition  tank  would  be  a  eye  treat  at  Work.

Correct  me  if  i  am  wrong  ..

I  hate  keeping  betta's  in  small  containers,  I  think  they  deserve  better...  But,  yes  can  keep  em  any  how.

A  guy  in  my  office  keeps  2  Bettas.  I  find  it  too  much  of  a  headache  to  keep  fish  at  work,  just  in  case  something  goes  wrong  and  the  water  ruins  the  floor  and  equipment  on  desk.  Would  be  an  embarrassing  situation.

 Thanks  for  your  reply  guys.

Nidhi,  6"  cube  sounds  nice.  Actually  I  came  across  one  desk  where  they  had  a  running  money  plant,  took  a  while  to  realize  its  a  real  one.  So  not  sure  how  sustaining  the  light  can  be  to  this  extent.
Water  changes,  I  wd  want  to  keep  it  fresh,  so  want  a  nicer  option  to  replace  water.

Prax,  I  wd  not  like  such  attractive  ones,  same  reason  don't  want  to  be  embarrassed  with  people  flocking  about,  and  nor  do  I  want  to  attract  rats,  yes  all  offices  have  them  :)

Humaid,  how  is  your  friend  managing  it?  did  he  topple  it  anytime,  his  water  changes  feeding  etc?  I  wd  not  go  for  a  vase  for  same  reason,  cubes  look  stable.

 Pramodh,   Smile

 Check  this:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfK6kO4Q5sg

 http://www.ebay.in/itm/imported-lcd-mini-usb-desktop-lamp-light-fish-tank-aquarium-led-clock-/141039920500?pt=lh_defaultdomain_203

Key  point  IMO  is  to  avoid  if  you  are  in  a  noisy  area  work  area  or  where  there  is  lot  of  thoroughfare.  It  will  not  be  fair  to  the  fish.

 -  Weekends  the  fish  may  survive  without  food
 -  Get  an  auto  feeder  for  long  term.  Cannot  trust  colleagues  to  take  care.
 -  Put  up  a  notice  with  do's  and  don'ts  for  people  who  are  not  aware.  People  even  in  my  house  tend  to  feed  the  fish  just  because  all  of  them  come  to  the  top  when  they  approach  the  tank
 -  Have  a  mesh  cover/plastic  prop  up  cover  to  prevent  things  from  falling  through
 -  Plan  your  water  change  strategy.  Will  you  go  in  on  a  weekend  when  nobody  is  around?  Are  you  near  the  restroom  to  be  able  to  do  this  without  drawing  too  much  attention?
 -  Shrimp  should  be  a  good  option  as  well  with  a  betta  or  guppies  (only  male).

Also  check  with  your  office's  safety  and  facility  folks  and  confirm  policy  for  personal  devices  use  for  electricity  and  all  allows  this.  There  may  be  reservations  on  such  things.
Also  if  there  are  like-minded  colleagues  along  with,  to  take  care  of  tank  when  you  are  on  that  long  holiday/vacation.

If  you  are  the  boss,  set  up  a  big  one  in  cafeteria  or  reception  !  :-)

Thanks  guys,  I  am  happy  for  all  your  replys.

Pramodh,  thanks  for  the  pointer.  I  liked  the  net  suggestions  the  most.  I  also  might  just  go  for  shrimp.  But  water  change  on  weekend  is  out  of  question   Smile  .  I  ll  probably  manage  in  early  hours,  but  I  dont  like  to  carry  the  stuff  around,  may  be  something  easier?  I  got  a  friend  from  IAH  so,  may  be  he  ll  back  me  up  during  my  leave,  being  shrimp  hope  shouldnt  be  much  issue.

Shyam,  Smile  well  no,  I  am  not  the  boss  yet.  I  think  it  was  ok  sometime  back,  ll  have  to  recheck.

Raj,  how  big  is  your  tank  you  keep  3  bettas?  and  how  are  yoy  managing  WC?

 Hi  Sai,

Go  for  A  water  less  small  tank  with  emmersed  aquatic  plants.  You  can  make  a  small  paludarium  like  as  this.

 It  is  just  15  X  15  X  10  cm.
