I'm  thinking  to  convert  my  16"L*9"W*14"H  into  low  tech  planted  aquarium.  So  guys  can  u  please  guide  me  to  make  it  more  successful.  I'm  absolutely  blank  in  planted  aquarium  field.  Also  what  about  substrate  ?  I  dont  want  to  use  controsoil;  as  my  economical  budget  is  also  low  Crying or Very sad     Red  soil  or  river  soil  could  b  used  as  substrate  ?

Thanks  garothmaan  for  showing  co-operation.  But  I  need  detailed  information  from  start  to  end.  I.e.  nature  of  soil,  thickness  of  soil,  selection  of  plants,  after  what  period  fishes  should  be  inserted.   Also  necessity  of  filter!!!
Hope  u  will  fully  co-operate.  And  others  are  also  welcome  for  guidance.  Thaks  alot.

My  suggestion  will  be  to  go  for  Mineralised  Top  Soil(MTS)  than  plain  sand,  reason  is  MTS  can  provide  sustained  nutrients  supply  over  a  period  than  a  plain  sand  which  will  be  a  great  help  for  stem  based  plants  you  will  be  planting.  Search  old  threads  for  MTS,  let  me  warn  you  its  time  consuming  and  laborious  but  very  much  worth  in  my  opinion.
Second  for  lighting  my  suggestion  will  be  check  out  a  2  feet  T5  which  will  be  lesser  power  utilization,  heat  and  more  light

Where  do  I  get  MTS  ?  Plz  suggest  me  any  natural  of  rich  nutrient  soil.  Around  200  km  of  radius  from  my  city;  I  don't  think  that  I  will  get  perfect  substrate.

You  cant  buy  MTS,  you  need  to  make  it  by  yourself  and  thats  why  I  said  its  little  ┬álaborious
Its  nothing  but  ordinary  top  soil  after  removing  a  feet  of  soil  from  the  top  and  mineralised  by  washing  and  drying  it  in  sun  many  times.  For  more  info  kindly  check  this  link  about  MTS  How  to  Make  MTS

 Hope  it  helps

 @  Kapil,

When  it  comes  to  this  hobby,  you  need  patience  and  time.  If  you  dont  have  patience  to  do  something,  you  can  just  spend  some  good  amount  of  money  and  buy  branded  soils/stuffs..

If  you  want  to  DIY  it,  you  need  to  spend  some  time  on  reading  and  then  doing  it.  Making  a  DIY  substrate  is  very  cheap  compared  to  branded  soils.  So  its  upto  you  on  what  you  wanted  to  use.

Since  it  is  a  low  tech  tank,  you  dont  need  much  quantity  of  MTS.  You  need  very  little  MTS.  Rest  substrate  could  be  managed  with  river  sand  or  gravel.

Thanks  shelly  for  your  valuable  opinion.  But  how  thick  the  layer  of  MTS  should  be,  for  low  tech  tank  ?

 Kapil,
For  your  tank  size  half  an  inch  of  MTS  is  enough,  1  inch  of  sand  on  top  of  MTS  is  recommended..  Don't  try  to  do  extravagant  sloping.
You  can  give  slight  sloping  of  the  sand..  like  1.5  inches  at  the  back  to  1  inch  in  the  front..

 1.   Should  I  go  for  powdered  river  soil  as  MTS.  Which  is  oftenlly  used  in  lawns  ;  to  grow  lawn  grass.
 2.   For  sand  I  think  thick  River  soil  or  Red  soil  (thick  red  soil  obtained  after  few  feets  down)  will  do?
 3.  What  about  filter  ?  I.  e.  HOB,  Top,  carnister  or  internal.  Filter  should  be  efficient  and  cheaper.

 1.  Use  Red  soil  or  your  local  soil  as  substrate.  One  inch  layer  of  soil  and  half  inch  layer  of  Goldan  sand.
 2.  You  are  in  tight  budget  so  use  a  CFL  (26  watt)  as  light  source.  It  will  be  enough  for  this  tank.
 3.  Use  a  HOB  filter.
 4.  You  can  go  for  DIY  CO2  or  liquid  source  of  Carbon.
 5.  Choose  hardy  and  undemanding  plants  such  as  mosses,  Riccia,  Marselia,  Ferns  etc.  You  can  request  to  senior  hobbyists  for  free  plants.
 6.  You  can  collect  woods  and  rocks  from  forest.

If  you  have  any  other  query,  please  post  here.

I  dont  wish  to   go  for  CO2  as  I  want  to  make  low  tech  tank.  I  will  definitely  consider  your  remaining  points.

What  will  be  life  of  the  life  of  this  setup  ?  Can  someone  please  suggest  DIY  HOB  filter  ?  If  I  wish  to  purchase  then  what  should  be  the  capacity  ?(lit/hr)

What  is  the  significance  of  contro  soil  in  planted  aquarium  ?  Whether  contro  soil  itself  used  as  substrate  ?  What  is  the  life  of  same  if  used  for  low  tech  plants  ?
