 Hello,

 I'm  getting  a  12"  X  12"  X  12"  (L  X  B  X  H)  cube  tank  and  planning  to  keep  probably  a  few  Tiger  Barbs  or  a  few  Zebra  Danio's  in  it,  maximum  of  4  of  them.

If  someone  could  kindly  suggest  a  suitable  filtration  system  for  the  tank.  Will  an  internal  power  filter  be  a  good  choice  or  will  it  be  too  powerful  for  a  tank  of  such  dimensions?

 Regards,
 Souptik

Souptik..  buy  a  small  HOB  filter  like  150-200Lts/Hr  rating,  And  Tiger  barbs  are  not  ideal  for  small  tanks  and  they  must  be  kept  in  large  numbers  like  above  12  numbers.  They  are  aggressive  to  their  own  kind.  so  if  you  keep  4  in  that  tank,  you  will  end  up  with  one  solitary  tiger  barb  with  a  few  weeks..

Thank-you  for  the  reply  Nidhi,  appreciate  it!   Smile

I'll  try  and  get  a  small  HOB  for  the  tank  then.  However,  will  something  like  this  work  for  the  tank  as  well:

 http://www.fishspot.in/fluval-nano-filter/

Also,  if  not  Tiger  Barbs...  any  other  suggestion  for  fish  that  would  do  well  in  the  tank?

I  was  also  thinking  about  having  a  dark,  black  substrate  for  the  tank  as  opposed  to  the  sand  substrate  in  my  larger  tank.  I  saw  this  on  Ebay  last  evening  and  was  thinking  about  getting  a  2kg  pack:

If  you  are  ok  with  the  space  those  filters  takes  up  inside  the  tank..  then  go  ahead..
As  for  the  fishes,  Herliqun  rasboras,  neon  tetras,  or  a  couple  of  Rams  or  thread  fin  rainbows,  endlers,  Otocinclus,  Kribensis  etc..

If  you  are  planning  a  planted  nano,  then  those  gravels  might  not  be  a  good  choice.  Buy  ADA  aquasoil  or  controsoil.  As  they  are  almost  black  in  colour.

I'm  not  planning  on  a  planted  setup.  Just  gravel,  some  rocks  and  a  center  driftwood.  I  guess  it's  okay  then  in  that  case  to  go  ahead  with  that  particular  black  gravel?

Yes,  that's  the  exact  question  that  is  plaguing  my  mind  as  well,  whether  I'm  okay  with  the  space  that  the  internal  filter  with  take  up  as  opposed  to  a  smaller  HOB.  Think  I'll  just  go  with  the  HOB.

Thank-you  for  the  input  and  also  for  the  fish  suggestions...  will  keep  them  in  mind  when  stocking  the  tank.  Smile

I  suggest  you  go  with  HOB  filter.  It  is  easy  to  clean  the  filter  without  disturbing  the  tank  setup  with  it,  apart  from  other  advantages  like  real  estate  savings  inside  the  cube.  I  had  an  internal  powerhead  in  a  10inch  cube  and  recently  re-did  the  setup  and  changed  the  filter  to  HOB.

Thank-you  Shyam  for  your  suggestion  and  input,  appreciate  it!  Yes,  I'll  be  going  with  a  HOB  filter  for  the  tank.  Something  like  this  should  do  the  job  I  believe:

A  lot  of  people  use  that  RS  Electrical  HOB  as  I  have  seen  and  surely  it  would  work.   Use  filter  media  sponge/floss  type  with  it.
I  am  using  similar  one  but  not  same  company  though.

That's  a  lovely  looking  tank  you  have  there  Shyam!  :)

I  enquired  at  the  LFS  this  afternoon  and  they  have  a  similar  HOB  filter  from  Sobo,  will  mostly  pick  that  up  for  the  tank.

^^  That's  a  lovely  looking  nano  tank  you  have  there!  The  output  spray  bar  surely  helps  in  reducing  the  return  flow  back  into  the  tank  from  the  power  filter.  I  saw  a  similar  looking  filter  from  Fluval  online  at  Fishspot  yesterday.  I'm  getting  a  HOB  though  from  the  local  LFS  some  time  next  week.  Should  have  the  tank  with  me  on  Tuesday  morning.
