 Hi  All,

I  need  some  urgent  help  please.
I  have  a  2.5G  moderately  planted  tank  in  which  I  have  3-4  RCS  and  one  otocinclus.
Originally  I  had  got  2  otos  some  3  weeks  ago,  but  one  died  the  very  next  day.
The  surviving  oto  looked  ok  for  a  couple  of  days  feeding  off  algae,  but  off-late  he's  acting  skittish.
He  constantly  laps  up/down  in  one  particular  corner  of  the  tank  and  that  really  concerns  me.  I  cant  understand  what's  bothering  him  :(

There's  not  much  algae  left  for  him  in  the  tank(at  least  visually),  so  I've  been  struggling  to  make  him  eat  things  like  algae  wafers/blanched  cucumber/cooked  peas  but  none  seem  to  entice  him  much.

I  really  like  this  little  guy  and  desperately  want  him  to  live.
Also,  I  realize  2.5G  is  too  small  a  space  for  him,  but  I  had  space  constraints  and  could  not  do  better  Sad
However,  I  am  now  planning  somehow  squeeze  a  new  10G  in  a  week  or  so.

Please  can  somebody  help  me  with  this  situation?
Is  he  hungry?  If  yes,  how  do  I  make  him  eat  the  wafers  or  veggies?

Is  he  feeling  lonely  ?  If  yes,  then  will  it  be  ok  if  I  get  2  more  otos  to  keep  him  company  till  I  finally  get  that  10G?
 Thanks  so  much  in  advance.

 Water  parameters:
 Ammonia:0,  Nitrite:0,  Nitrates:  <20
 2.5G  tank,  ~  10  ltrs  capacity

It's  good  that  you've  realised  that  tank  is  small  for  it.  What  are  the  other  parameters  in  your  tank?  Like  what's  the  water  changed  schedule,  filter  cleaning  schedule  etc.  ?  If  it's  behaving  skittish  don't  stress  it  out  by  switching  on  the  light.  How  long  since  you  have  it?  Did  you  acclimatise  it  well  before  introducing  into  the  tank?

 Cheers,

 Karthik

Thanks  so  much  for  the  quick  reply  @KarthikC.  Here  are  my  answers:

 -  I  change  my  water  every  weekend,  usually  after  I  test  the  parameters.
 -  I  have  a  HOB  rated  for  280L/H  that  I  clean  roughly  every  week  too.  By  cleaning,  I  mean  gently  swishing  the  filter  media  in  water  drained  for  PWC.
 -  I  have  had  the  oto  for  close  to  3  weeks  now,  first  of  which  he  seemed  fine.  I  am  seeing  this  behavior  only  from  past  couple  of  days
 -  I  did  acclimatize  him  for  close  to  2  hours,  pouring  like  5ml  of  tank  water  with  a  syringe  every  15  mins.

Few  other  things  I  missed  to  mention:
 -  I  see  a  little  bump  on  his  tummy,  which  hints  he  is  eating  well?
 -  Is  he  by  any  chance  intimidated  by  the  RCS?  Though  I've  never  seen  them  bother  each  other  at  all
 -  I  use  water  from  my  PureIt  filter,  but  I  have  no  idea  about  the  pH.  Can  that  be  an  issue  here?

I  did  a  30%  water  change  last  saturday,  I  am  planning  to  do  another  10-20%  this  evening  as  soon  as  I  reach  home.
Please  tell  me  if  I  shouldn't.  Thanks  again  karthik  !!

One  more  thing,  I  just  have  river  gravel/laterite  gravel  as  substrate  (I  am  not  sure  exactly  what  kind).  I  doubt  if  this  matters  but  want  to  keep  you  informed  anyways.

For  a  better  idea  on  the  substrate,  you  may  pls  refer  to  my  pics  at  http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=37416

Yet  another  thing  (forgive  me  for  the  erratic  posts,  I'm  just  thinking  off  my  head),  my  tank  temperature  has  been  on  the  higher  side  lately.  It  stays  around  27-28  C  these  days  as  against  the  24-26  earlier.  I  have  a  couple  of  tiny  laptop  cooler  fans  on  standby  that  I  can  rig-up  if  somebody  thinks  temperature  is  a  concern.  If  not  much,  I  believe  they  can  bring  the  temperature  down  by  at  least  a  degree  ?

 Anybody?  :)

Update:  I  did  a  20%  water  change  as  soon  as  I  got  home.  But  even  before  the  water  change,  I  saw  the  oto  has  calmed  down  a  bit,  though  he  still  continues  to  lap  around  that  corner,  but  just  not  as  quickly  as  earlier.  I've  put  in  a  cucumber  slice  and  crushed  a  single  algae  wafer  and  spread  it  across  the  tank.  Hope  he'll  feel  better  by  morning,  fingers  crossed  :|

Meanwhile,  any  suggestions  would  greatly  help.  Thanks  and  good  night  Smile

Its  been  close  to  3  months  now  Vignesh.  Thanks  to  everything  I  learnt  here  at  IAH,  I  started  off  with  fishless  cycling  and  the  tank  parameters  have  been  mostly  stable  since  then.  Only  the  otos  were  added  like  3  weeks  ago.

Unless  there  is  some  snap/video,  its  hard  to  guess  what  exactly  is  the  issue.

I  am  just  guessing  couple  of  things  but  it  might  not  be  correct  -
 1.  Since  you  say  that  the  temperature  is  slightly  high,  make  sure  that  there  is  enough  movement  on  the  surface  for  DO.  Else  add  an  airstone.
 2.  Are  you  sure  the  filter  is  280L/hr?  Though  it  wont  be  close  to  the  rated  flow,  it  could  be  too  high  for  your  tank.

Even  a  short  mobile  video  could  help

I  see  your  point  Deepak.  Will  try  to  upload  something  soon.

Meanwhile,  in  answer  to  your  queries:
 1.  Yes,  I've  always  had  an  airstone  running  24/7.  Will  probably  rig-up  a  small  USB  fan  this  weekend.
 2.  You're  right,  I  seriously  doubt  it  too.  I  have  a  pre-filter  floss  attached  that  clogs  up  and  needs  cleaning  every  3-4  days,  so  the  flow  isn't  that  much  in  the  first  place.  Also,  since  its  a  HOB,  I  am  using  a  make-shift  document  holder  clip  to  divert  some  of  the  flow  to  the  other  end  of  the  tank,  away  from  the  intake.  That  further  distributes  the  flow.  Hope  this  helped.  Thanks  for  responding   Smile

Catching  on  the  things  that  you  have  mentioned:

 -  Perhaps  the  stock  that  you  bought  itself  wasn't  great  enough.

 -  Do  you  still  see  that  lump  in  the  fish?   A  lump  is  not  always  a  good  sign  and  esp.  if  it  looks  out  of  shape.

 -  Otos  def.  need  more  of  their  type  to  feel  safe.   Perhaps  adding  3  or  4  might  help.

Hey  friends,  wishing  you  all  a  very  happy  Dasara  !!

@ShankarB  -  thanks  for  your  inputs.  I  have  made  some  changes  accordingly,  and  here  are  some  updates  on  it:

 -  I  was  googling  about  oto  behavior  the  other  night  and  came  across  posts  where  people  claimed  to  have  seen  their  otos  dancing,  or  in  other  words  going  around  in  circles.  Some  experts  had  responded  with  suggestions  like  increasing  the  flow  in  the  tank.  I  took  a  hint  from  this  and  removed  the  DIY  pre-filter  from  my  HOB.  And  voila  !!!,  my  oto  stopped  what  he  was  doing  and  started  acting  normal   Cheering   Cheering   So  I  guess  they  do  that  erratic  lap  swimming  just  to  push  water  quickly  through  their  gills,  thereby  creating  a  virtual  flow.  I  am  no  expert  on  otos,  but  this  is  what  my  oto  seemed  to  have  experienced  all  these  days.
 -  I  also  read  about  otos  needing  more  of  their  kind  to  feel  better  (including  @shankarb's  post  above)  and  got  two  more  to  keep  him  company.  And  guess  what,  my  oto  has  started  enjoying  the  algae  wafers.  He  never  used  to  even  look  at  the  wafers  earlier,  and  now  he  seems  to  have  developed  a  liking  for  it  out  of  nowhere!!!  Is  this  peer  pressure  or  what  ???   Very Happy

After  learning  so  much  from  IAH  and  getting  some  great  advice,  I  know  I  owe  you  guys  some  pictures   Very Happy
Thank  you  all  once  again,  you  guys  ROCK  !!!   Thumb Up   Thumb Up

Good  to  hear  that  your  oto  is  fine.  But  a  WARNING  here.  Otos  love  to  graze  continuously  and  have  a  high  bioload.  3  in  a  2.5g  tank  is  very  tight.  You  should  start  changing  10  to  20%  water  every  2  days  till  you  can  get  a  bigger  tank,  cycle  it  and  transfer  them.  I  have  kept  2  otos  in  a  2  gallon  tank  with  twice  a  day  water  change.

Also  shrimps  do  bother  otos  unknowingly.  They  may  just  jump  on  their  back  or  try  to  feel  them  with  their  feelers  resulting  in  sudden  skittish  movement  of  otos.  I  had  injured  shrimps  as  a  scared  oto  swished  the  shrimp  with  its  tail.

@neoaqua  -  Thanks  so  much  for  your  inputs  :)

I  have  realized  my  mistake  of  putting  them  in  such  a  small  space,  and  luckily  for  me,  before  it  was  too  late.
I  went  and  got  my  10G  today  but  couldn't  set  it  up.  Tomorrow  I  am  planning  to  start  the  cycling  part  at  least,  and  I  am  hoping  it  should  be  quick  since  I  have  2  cycled  2.5  G's  Smile  The  final  setup  will  probably  have  to  wait  till  the  weekend.

About  what  you  said  on  the  interaction  with  shrimps,  I  do  agree.  I  have  seen  my  RCS  kind  of  nudge  the  otos  around  while  they  are  looking  for  food,  tiny  little  bullies  they  are  !!  The  otos  maintain  their  gentleman  nature  and  promptly  make  way.  I  am  thinking  not  to  put  the  RCS  in  the  10G  and  make  the  2.5G  an  RCS-only  tank.

Will  post  some  pics  once  the  otos  move  into  their  new  home.  Thanks  again  Smile
