 Hi  Matt,

I  am  not  sure  if  Aplocheilus  sp  is  found  in  northern  rivers.  Your  best  bet  would  be  to  explore  upstream  of  Yamuna  which  flows  through  Delhi.  I  am  just  speculating,  the  best  of  places  would  be  atleast  20+km  upstream  as  its  highly  polluted  around  the  city.

Will  try  to  update  here  with  more  accurate  info  in  a  day  or  two.

EDIT:  Seems  to  be  common  across  southern  asia,  so  think  Yamuna  would  be  good  location.  Slow  moving  water  with  some  vegetation  would  be  ideal  places  to  look  for.

This  link  shows  a  map  with  claimed  distribution  on.   Do  you  think  this  is  likely?

 http://www.globalspecies.org/ntaxa/661665

According  to  Fishbase,  Aplocheilus  Panchax  has  a  very  wide  distribution

 http://www.fishbase.org/summary/Aplocheilus-panchax.html

The  other  collection  info  for  the  species  shows  it  as  being  found  in  Nepal  as  well.

Fingers  crossed  I  can  find  some.   I  used  to  keep  these  around  30  years  ago  and  they  were  a  staple  in  every  shop.   Now  they  have  completely  disappeared  and  nowhere  stocks  them.

I  found  this  document  on  the  Yamuna  river.   Table  3  shows  species  caught,  but  unfortunatley  not  panchax.   Several  other  nice  fish  though.

The  best  time  for  collecting  would  be  the  summer  months. If  you  are  planning  to  take  the  fish  out  of  the  country  research  the  paper  work  needed.  It  will  probably  be  long  and  cumbersome  process.  You  might  want  to  get  in  touch  with  some  one   who  exports  the  fish  who  can  guide  you  with  that.
