I have a community freshwater aquarium, with 10 Zebra Danios, 5 Guppies, 4 Endlers and 2 plecos in a 30 gallon tank with a Fluval C2 HOB filter. I had an issue with white and grey algae blooming in my gravel, for which I have currently removed the gravel. However, in this period, there were some water quality issues, and slightly higher than normal Nitrate levels. 2 of my guppies developed a black coloured band at the end of their tails, 1 had a split tail, and another developed bloat. The danios, endlers and plecos are unaffected by this, which is why I believe that a little bit of fighting between the guppies and endlers may have also caused the tail problems.
I isolated the bloated guppy in a bucket to quarantine him. I could not feed him shelled and blanched peas because of his teeny tiny size, and also could not feed him any stomach clearing medicines. So, I gave him an epsom bath by adding a tsp of epsom salt to a gallon of tank water and leaving him in there for 20 minutes. He was not at all stressed, and was swimming normally in the epsom bath without a care in the world. After a while I moved him from the bath to regular tank water. His scales have settled a bit, but not completely. The other 3 affected guppies are not ill per se, but I am worried about their tails getting infected.
A friend from a LFS suggested using Rid-All Red.
I had heard that the Red rid-all (with tripaflavine) is safe for use in aquariums, is not harmful to all fish, and can be used with biological filtration. However I do not want to take any action without asking the experienced members of this forum.
I also have unlimited access to an almond tree, and I have read good stuff about using almond leaves in aquariums.
So dear fellow aquarists, how can I help my guppies get better? Any and all suggestions are welcome and urgently needed.
