I  am  from  Dombivli  -  West  &  one  of  the  kid  (ground  floor)  got  Dengue  last  week,  so  the  BMC  guys  had  come  to  check  each  house  in  our  society  and  have  asked  us  to  remove  plants  and  we  have  3  fishtanks  at  home  which  they  have  said  is  risky  too!  People  should  eliminate  breeding  sites  in  and  around  their  homes  to  avoid  contracting  dengue  is  what  their  point  is.
But  I  just  can't  think  of  my  home  without  Fish  tank  and  plants  Sad  -  Guys  what  do  you  think  I  shud  be  doing?

I  think  the  authorities  should  be  educated  that  the  fish  would  "eat"  the  mosquitoes  and  their  larve.  Why  not  ask  people  to  keep  surrounding  clean  and  avoid  garbage  dumping  instead?

 Cheers,

 Karthik

Yah,  that  is  what  I  think  too.  But  even  the  news  paper  had  stated  "fish  tank"  as  one  of  the  easy  breeding  site.  So  even  at  home  they  are  scared!
I  have  tetras  and  Discus  in  my  tanks!

tetras  would  beat  the  hell  out  of  any  mosquito  even  trying  to  "sit"  on  the  water  surface.  You  need  to  search  for  a  nice  document  that  states  the  natural  diet  of  these  small  fish  and  keep  a  print  out  with  you.  Don't  worry,  everything  will  be  fine.  Smile

 Cheers,

Karthik  is  so  right  telling  it.   Main  reason  for  such  diseae  outbreaks  are  due  to  poor  knowledge  and  handling  of  situation  by   such  officials.

Tell  that  the  risk  of  dengue  arises  when  you  got  stangnant  water.  Explain  to  them  that  the  water  in  your  tank  is  well  aerated  and  hence  the  chance  of  mosquitoes  reproducing  in  your  tank  will  not  arise.  Tell  them  that  they  should  check  on  uncovered  drains  instead  of  troubling  hobbyst  like  us..If  he  persists,  give  them  my  number..I'll  pursuade  them  Smile  Smile....

Fishes  and  mosquito  larvae  never  get  along.  Fishes  get  attracted  by  moving  larvae  and  gulp  them  immediately  on  the  very  first  sight.

Do  you  have  outdoor  pond  type  set  up?  Or  all  indoor  glass  tanks?

mosquitos  lay  eggs  even  in  little  stagnant  water.  Like  thrown  coconut  shells,  bottle  caps,  tea  cups,  utensils,  plastic  water  glass  etc  with  collected  rainy  water  or  thrown  water.

all  types  of  mosquitoes  can't  transmit  dengue  fever.  Viral  pyrexia  with  thrombocytopenia  (decreased  platelet  count  in  blood)  must  not  be  dengue  all  the  times.

neat  and  clean  environment  helps  in  prevention  of  dengue.

I  faced  the  same  problem.  When  the  guys  came  to  my  house,  I  took  them  around  our  colony  to  show  them  actual  breeding  sites  of  mosquitoes  where  we  could  actually  see  larvae.  Because  of  this  inspection  and  their  free  Edit  advice,  few  of  my  neighbours  also  removed  their  fish  tank.
The  plants  which  are  grown  in  water  like  the  lucky  bamboo, are  more  vulnerable  to  mosquito,  their  water  must  be  changed  regularly.
Fish  tanks  for  sure  are  no  problem  when  it  comes  to  mosquitoes  due  to  well  circulated  water  and  hungry  fishes  they  house.

Most  fish  will  eat  the  mosquito  larvae  and  if  not  then  introduce  some  guppy  in  your  tank  to  eat  them  all  .......  Smile
