 Hi  Friends,

I  was  out  of  town  for  a  3-4  days  and  when  I  returned,  my  hair-grass  was  covered  with  some  long  thread-like  algae  Sad
This  tank  is  almost  a  month  old  and  didn't  have  this  algae  problem  before.

Is  this  very  bad  or  can  I  get  back  control  over  the  tank?  Any  fish(like  black  molly)  that  I  can  temporarily  add  to  curb  this?
I  don't  want  to  add  any  shrimp  due  to  the  DIY  Co2  added.

I  looked  up  other  threads  on  IAH  and  they  seem  to  suggest  excess  nutrients  as  the  root  cause  and  to  plant  more  densely  and  do  frequent  water  changes.  I  am  planning  for  a  rice-paddy  kind  of  look  for  this  tank  and  hence  don't  want  to  plant  anything  else.

Would  love  to  hear  from  you,  thanks  so  much  in  advance  :)

 Tank  Details:
 Dimension:  18"x9"x12"  (8G  approx)
 Substrate:  Controsoil  and  aqua-clay
 CO2:  DIY  (1  bubble/2  secs  diffused  through  an  internal  filter,  6  hrs/day)
 Lights:  12w  LED  (on  for  6  hrs/day)
Plants:  Eleocharis  Parvula  (covers  only  40%  of  the  substrate)
Fish:  Neon  tetras  (6  nos)  and  Otocinclus  (1  no)
Dosing:  None  as  of  now,  (planning  to  use  seachem  flourish  later  on)

 Hi  Abhi,
You  could  use  an  old  tooth  brush  to  remove  them.  It  comes  off  pretty  easily.
I'm  not  an  expert  to  find  the  root  cause  though.

Ofcourse,  you  must  have  done  your  water  changes.

 Thanks,
 Karthik

 Hi

Use  a  tooth  brush  to  remove  as  much  as  you  can.
Make  a  large  water  change.  Reduce  the  quantity  of  feeding  of  fish  by  50  %.
Reduce  the  amount  of  light  by  adding  floating  plants.  This  can  be  removed  once  the  algae  is  gone.
Rosy  barbs  will  eat  this  if  you  do  not  feed  them  anything  else.

I  have  duck  weed  and  you  can  help  yourself  to  as  much  as  you  need  if  you  visit  my  place.  Thumb Up

Isee  that  your  hair  grass  is  making  a  transition  from  emersed  to  submerged  growth.  The  algae  is  common  during  this  phase.
In  consistant  CO2  will  also  cause  algae.

@Karthik  -  thanks  a  lot,  how  you've  been  doing?  Smile  I  will  try  the  tooth  brush  method  and  yes,  I  did  a  massive  (50%)  water  change  yesterday  and  checked  my  parameters  too,  everything  seemed  in  range.

@Preetam  -  thats  some  great  info  you  have  given   Clapping  50%  water  change  is  done  and  I  have  introduced  4  fancy  guppies  from  another  tank.  They  seem  to  be  nipping  at  the  algae,  but  not  doing  much  damage  at  the  moment  Sad  I  had  just  one  1.5l  bottle  of  yeast  reactor,  but  am  planning  to  add  a  2nd  bottle  for  more  consistency.  About  the  light,  the  tank  is  placed  next  to  a  window  and  was  getting  indirect  diffused  sunlight.  I  have  now  covered  the  side  facing  the  window  with  a  cardboard  so  to  block  out  the  light.  Hope  this  will  help  :)

Also,  thanks  for  the  duckweed  offer,  I  was  actually  looking  for  some  Smile  Will  try  to  pick  some  up  from  you  this  next  weekend  Smile

 Hi  Abhi,
 Thanks  for  asking.
I'm  doing  fine,  hope  you  are  good  too!

I  also  had  these  growing  during  the  initial  stages,  but  haven't  seen  them  once  the  tank  got  settled  and  the  plants  grew.

I  wouldn't  advise  getting  any  fishes  temporarily.  Just  the  brush  will  do  the  trick.
As  it's  a  small  tank  you  can  remove  them  easily  and  you  are  anyways  working  to  fix  the  root  cause  of  it.  So  you  are  covered   Very Happy

 Regards,
 Karthik

Thanks  Karthik  !!  I  too  want  to  avoid  adding  any  additional  fish  just  to  fix  this  issue,  don't  want  to  worry  how  to  relocate  them  once  the  algae  is  gone  Smile  I  have  made  some  changes  per  your  and  Preetam's  suggestions  and  keeping  my  fingers  crossed   Very Happy
