 Dear  All,

I  have  a  new  2  foot  cube  setup  (2  months)  running  on  MH  (70W)  presently.   I  would  like  to  gradually  replace  MH  and  go  for  an  LED  based  lighting.   For  this  i  have  the  following  questions:

 1.   Total  LED  (Basis  3W  LED)  based  wattage  requirement  for  this  tank
 2.   Number  of  LEDs  required  i.e.  Cool  White,  Neutral  White  &  Warm  Light,  its  wavelength
 3.   Do  i  need  to  consider  other  colors  like  Red,  Green  &  Blue?
 4.   Number  of  LED  panels,  One  Or  Two.

 My  tank  specification
 Dimension  -  (L  +  W+  H)   (24  +  24  +  22)  -  Inches
 55  Gallon  (200  Lts)
Substrate  -  ADA  Soil   (4  Inch  from  back  to  2  inch  front)

 Plants
 Glosso
 Hemianthus  Micranthemoides
 Staurogyne  Porto  Velho
 Hygrophilla  Pinnatifida
 Limophila  Sp.  "Butterfly"
 Ludwigia
 Hygrophilla  Corymbosa  Compacta
 Crypts
 Anubias  /  Moses

 Hi,

LED  would  not  be  effective  for  a  22  inch  tall  tank.  For  that  depth  your  current  MH  is  the  best  solution.  If  you  are  still  wanting  to  go  for  LED's  use  Cree  LED's.  Don't  waste  your  time  and  money  and  any  other  brand.

Leds  will  do  an  excellent  job.  Just  select  the  right  lenses  for  penetration  power

Preetam,  considering  my  substrate  level  the  height  gets  reduced  to  20"...     what  is  the  depth  level  an  LED  light  can  penetrate  upto?

Look  at  the  lumen  out  put  of  the  led  and  the  color  temperature.  Make  sure  the  amount  of  lumens  is  more  than  the  current  MH  value.  With  LED  DONT  GO  BY  THE  WATT  PER  GALLON  rule.

I  dont  agree  to  your  point  on  not  to  use  LED  for  a  22  inch  tall  tank.  LED's  with  proper  optics  can  work  even  for  a  3  foot  tall  tank.

See  the  growth  of  HC  cuba  in  a  24"  tall  tank.

Stick  with  metal  halide..  it  gives  good  penetration  for  deep  tank,  beats  all  LED's  and  PLL  or  T5  tubes  when  you  have  18"  or  more  deep  tanks.
Only  other  option  is  High  end  LED  like  CREE  with  30  degree  lenses  at  30"  from  the  substrate  levels.  Aim  for  5,000  to  6,000  lumens  and  spread  the  LED  evenly  over  the  tank..

 Hi  Shelly,

The  growth  looks  awesome.  No  doubt.  The  Light  is  hanging  about  6  to  8  inches  above  the  tank  .  Please  correct  me  if  I  am  wrong
Could  we  have  the  profile  of  the  Led  lighting  system  i.e.  nitty  gritty  details.

 It  would  help  us.

 Regards

 Krishna

Metal  Halides  and  PLLs  are  old  outdated  technology  which  have  been  replaced  by  LEDs  and  T5/T5HO  respectively

LEDS  with  the  right  lenses  will  serve  you  well  for  your  tank

Thank  you  all  for  your  valuable  suggestions.   Ok  now  its  clear  that  i  can  go  ahead  with  LEDs.   Could  anyone  please  answer  my  second  part  of  the  question  as  below?

Hi,  depending  on  the  LEDs,  around  30  will  do  for  your  tank.  If  you  are  mounting  close  to  the  water  surface  then  60(if  LEDS  are  close  to  each  other)  or  45  (if  they  are  spread  out)  degree  optics  will  do.  Similarly  if  you  are  mounting  the  LEDS  6-12  inches  above  the  tank  then  30  and  45  degree  lenses  will  be  required.

You  can  go  for  a  mixture  of  6500K  and  4200K  LEDS,  half  and  half.  No  need  for  RGB  LEDS.

Hi  mortis!   thank  you  for  the  help...     could  you  also  tell  me  if  LEDs  are  close  to  each  other  then  what  is  the  minimum  margin  space  required  to  maintain  between  them?   as  you  said  around  30  would  be  required  for  this  tank...  how  is  it  calculated  i.e.  what  is  the  measurement  criteria  for  number  of  LED  required  based  on  its  wattage  say  3W?
