 Hi,
After  the  background  installation,  added  a  few  fish,  felt  there  was  little  ammonia  spike.  Thought  filtration  was  inadequate  and  hence  this  DIY  filter.  Had  aa  look  at  all  the  DIY  filter  projects.  Wanted  something  which  I  could  do  using  a  spare  pump  I  had.  Started  with  that  thought.  Always  was  curious  of  using  the  prefilter  from  the  water  purifier  as  a  filter  as  it  was  leak  proof.  As  I  started  looking  for  stuff,  found  some  stuff  listed  on  ebay  -  2  prefilters  for  Rs.400  odd.  Ordered.  Received  the  filters.
Road  block  no  1.  The  prefilter  inlet  and  outlet  is  of  quarter  inch  which  was  too  small  for  any  filteration.  So  ended  up  in  the  lathe  for  boring  and  threading  to  acconodate  1/2  inch  cpvc  fittings.  successfully  got  thru  this  road  block.
finished  90  %  of  the  project  today.  Happy  with  the  running.

Pump  is  placed  in  the  tank.  one  filter  has  scrubber  and  the  other  has  seachem  matrix.

This  is  a  neat  design,  but  with  such  a  small  diameter  inlet  and  outlet  is  there  enough  flow  ?  which  pump  are  you  using  to  drive  this?

Could  you  post  few  snaps  with  the  cover  opened.  Only  disadvantage  with  this  is,  if  you  dont  have  a  barrier  for  flow,  most  of  the  water  will  just  move  from  inlet  to  outlet  without  much  of  any  use  for  filter  medium.

To  solve  this  problem  I  have  used  the  out  as  the  inlet.  Fixed  a  pipe  to  take  water  to  the  bottom  from  where  it  rises  through  the  media  and  flows  out  thru  the  the  other  side.  Will  post  a  picture  next  time  I  open  the  filter.

Very  nicely  designed  Thumb Up  can't  exactly  make  out  from  pic,  is  this  complete  thing  under  the  tank  or  hanged  on  back?

And  what  was  challenge  you  faced  to  put  pump  inside  one  of  the  cans,  just  so  that  its  lesser  clutter  in  tank.

dude  to  solved  my  problem,  I  am  using  the  same  concept  for  filter,  its  working  great  but  i  was  thinking  for  a  long  time  to  convert  in  the  input  and  output  to  1/2  and  i  was  threading  on  the  same  idea,  get  it  re  bored  to  1/2  inch.
Now  with  you  experiment  i  am  sure  that  i  am  on  right  path.

On  side  note  i  have  not  used  pump  inside,  i  have  used  the  power  head  which  was  lying  with  me  to  pump  in  the  water.  and  retained  using  the  original  in  and  out

Does  use  of  two  cans  for  filtration  reduce  the  flow?

I  have  a  few  filters  like  these  lying  around  from  old  aquagaurd  filters  which  we  dont  use  anymore.

 Could  they  be  used?

not  to  hijack,  but  actually  old  aquguard  filter  body  is  better  as  it  has  connector  for  1/2  inch,  so  you  dont  have  to  bore  to  fit  1/2  inch  pipe.  Initially  i  was  looking  for  those  only.
