I  have  5  feet  cichlids  fish  tank.  Right  now  I  m  using  Iron  stand.  I  was  thinking  to  cover  iron  stand  with  wood  but  my  Interior  designer  asked  me  to  remove  Iron  stand  completely  and  use  wooden  stand  only.  I  m  not  sure  wooden  stand  is  sufficient  for  600  to  700  kg  tank  weight  (including  water,  tank,  stone,  fishes  etc).

I  m  wondering  whether  to  cover  Iron  stand  with  wood  or  use  only  wooden  stand  only.

He  told  he  will  use  Plywood  and  lamination  for  stand.

 Please  advise  ASAP........

Plywood  stand  will  be  better.  They  can  take  the  load  if  built  properly..
I  guess  your  carpenter  has  the  Idea  to  build  it..

Ply  wood  stands  are  better  for  small  tanks.  Cover  your  iron  stand  in  ply.  If  the  carpenter  does  not  construct  the  stand  properly  it  will  be  a  disaster

Thank  you  for  your  suggestions.  I  checked  with  few  carpenters  and  they  are  asking  18  K  to  cover  stand  with  plywood  and  laminate.  Is  it  so?  i  feel  its  very  much  high.  Please  share  your  experience.

You  can  DIY  yourself.  Use  Paint  on  the  stand  instead  of  laminate  and  it  will  be  easier.  Few  hours  of  work.  Get  the  ply  cut  to  size  in  the  shop  itself.  Drill  holes  and  screw  it  into  the  stand.  Use  spray  paint  cans  to  paint  it.

Preetam,  thank  you  for  your  response!  will  it  look  good.  Its  easy  to  say.  Have  you  done  this  before?  What  have  you  done  for  your  fish  tank?  What  is  your  tank  size?

Plywood  with  laminates  will  look  good.  Also  during  usual  maintenance  when  water  spills  over  it,  you  can  wipe  the  water  off.  The  life  of  ply  will  be  more  when  laminated  than  paint.  i  have  placed  my  3  ft.  tank  on  top  of  the  shoe  rack  which  is  made  out  of  ply.  For  extra  safety  I  have  used  sheesham  wood  strip  as  support.

According  to  me  solid  wood  cabinets  will  be  best(lookwise  and  durability),  but  will  cost  you  more.  As  Preetam  said,  covering  the  iron  stand  with  ply  will  be  a  good  option.  But  laminates  or  paint  is  up  to  you.

You  can  also  buy  a  hinge  and  get  it  welded  onto  the  iron  stand  and  then  fix  the  plywwod  door  on  to  the  hinge.

I  have  ply  wood  stand  made  for  my  20  gallon  tank.  This  was  done  in  2010  and  cost  me  7k.  My  120  Gallon  tank  was  on  a  metal  stand.  Cost  me  roughly  the  same  for  the  iron  stand.  If  you  want  quality...  18K  is  not  really  off  the  mark.

As  said  earlier,  just  go  for  a  plywood  stand.  You  can  Diy  it  for  less  than  6k..  Get  a  plan,  do  the  math  for  cutting  size  and  build  your  self..  The  ply  wood  dealer  can  give  the  cut  pieces,  use  screw  or  nails  along  with  fevicol  to  put  it  togetherl.  Give  wood  primer  coat  first  and  then  paint  it  with  an  enamel  of  your  chosen  color..
