 Hi  all,

After  going  through  lots  &  lots  of  forums  and  learning  from  past  mistakes  (  still  making  new  ones  :-)  )  I  am  in  process  of  building  a  Walstad  low  light  setup

 Equipment

 Tank:  15  gallon  :  24  *  12  *  12  Glass  tank
Filter  :  A  1100  lph  internal  power  filter  (inlet  flow  is  heavily  throttled,  and  air  line  also  throttled)  flow  is  low  now,  planning  to  put  a  spray  bar  DIY  type
Substrate  :  Bottom  layer  -  Normal  garden  soil  about  1/2  "  deep
Top  layer  -   sand  +  gravel  collected  from  a  stream  from  native

Decorations  :  some  stones  collected  from  same  stream
Lighting  :  None  as  of  now  (  suggestions  needed)
Plants  :  Cabomba,  Ludwiga,  Amazon  Sword,  Crypt
Fish:  6  Tiger  Barb,  1  Glofish  Danio,  ,2  Balck  skirt  tetra
1  Apple  snail  about  1.5cm  size

I  have  a  2.5  gallon  tank  and  1  gallon  bowl  each  housing  a  betta  plakat  &  1  apple  snail  each  other  than  this.

Water  I  am  using  is  from  borewell  (  hard  water)  Chennai  location.

NB  :  Pics  to  follow  later  as  I  don't  have  any  now

 Preparation:

Washed  sand  /  gravel  and  stones  in  running  water  till  it  turned  almost  clear,  and  settled  (  did  this  activity  for  about  5  times)
 Removed  big  stones  from  gravel
Washed  the  garden  soil  to  remove  organic  matter  and  hung  in  a  cloth  to  remove  water  for  a  day

 Day-1

Relocated  fish  from  tank  in  buckets,  stored  about  2  buckets  of  tank  water  for  later  use.  Kept  filter  also  for  later  use

spread  the  garden  soil  in  the  bottom  and  topped  it  with  sand  /  gravel.  Total  substrate  height  is  1  to  1.5  "   (  I  feel  this  is  a  bit  low,  but  ran  out  of  sand:-(  )

Wetted  the  soil  and  did  the  planting  and  placing  of  rocks

filled  water  up  to  30%  and  let  it  settle  for  some  time  and  then  drained  it  off  and  filled  with  fresh  water  up  to  70&.  kept  it  overnight  to  settle.

 Day-2

Did  a  75%  water  change  in  the  morning.  Added  apple  snail.  Filled  up  to  80%  of  tank  and  kept  it  as  it  is  till  evening

In  evening,  replaced  about  2  buckets  of  water  in  tank  with  old  tank  water  and  fixed  filter  in  the  tank  .  Waited  for  sometime  for  water  to  clear  and  added  fish.

 Day-3

Next  day  morning  again  did  a  30%  water  change.  Fish  seems  ok  till  now.  Swimming  normally.  Initially  thought  that  Apple  snail  will  be  attacked  by  Tiger  barbs,  surprisingly  they  don't  seem  to  be  interested  in  it.

Due  to  low  substrate  height  &  filter  flow,  some  plants  (ludwiga)  were  uprooted  .  Replanted  them.

 Day  -4  (today)

Fish  seems  ok  .  Don't  know  about  plants.  there  is  some  yellowing  in  Crypt  (  were  not  in  best  condition  when  I  got  them  )

How  long  do  plants  take  to  establish  themselves  in  tank?  How  to  now  that  they  are  ok?

 Lessons  learnt  till  now

 1.  Get  enough  substrate  before  you  start  working  on  the  tank.  I  underestimated  the  quantity
 2.  Aquatic  plants  are  not  available  in  Moore  market,  go  to  Kolathur  for  them
 3.  Don't  go  to  any  big  shot  stores  in  Kolathur  for  beginner  plants,  Go  to  smaller  shops,  will  get  plants  at  one-tenth  of  cost.
 4.  Buying  a  light  before  starting  is  better.
 5.  A  low  flow  filter  /  HOB  is  better  for  a  planted  tank.
 6.  Apple  snails  look  good,  don't  do  much  work  like  preventing  of  anaerobic  pockets  etc.

 more  to  follow.

Usually  plants  will  take  two  weeks  to  establish  good  roots,  till  then  you  will  not  see  any  growth.  This  applies  to  most  plants  but  there  are  exceptions.  After  this  you  will  see  growth  in  shoots.  Now  use  2  14  watt  CFL  (Or  something  of  similar  capacity)  placed  at   6  cm  and  18  cm  from  one  edge  of  the  tank.  This  is  more  than  enough  light  for  your  purpose.  Put  in  the  lights  soon,  Emmersed  plants  will  melt  in  case  there  in  no  lights  after  a  few  days  of  planting,  the  ambient  light  will  not  be  enough.
Crypts  will  take  longer  to  settle  down.

 thanks  preetam

ludwiga  seems  to  be  ok.  new  roots  and  leaves  are  coming.

crypts  were  almost  dying.  old  leaves  are  gone.  started  putting  out  new  leaves  now.

cabomba  was  attacked  by  tiger  barbs.  now  only  two  stems  standing  out  of  about  10  initial.  the  substrate  depth  was  also  a  limiting  factor  here.  they  were  constantly  uprooting.

fishes  are  ok.  did  a  30%  water  change  two  days  before.  plants  are  with  sunlight  coming  from  window  only.

Congrats  Anand.  Nice  setup.  i  have  read  that  tiger  barbs  are  notorius  as  fin  nippers  and  known  for  their  aggressive  behaviour.  Direct  sunlight  may  cause  rapid  brown  algae  growth  in  your  tank.  Take  care.

 Thanks  Yashodeep

Tigers  are  aggressive  lot  for  sure.  They  ate  two  of  my  danios  earlier  (  both  were  a  bit  sluggish).  The  remaining  danio  is  fast  and  aggressive  enough  to  keep  tigers  at  bay.

Tigers  seems  to  treat  Black  skirt  tetras  of  their  own  (  like  an  elder  brother  Very Happy  ).  They  shoal  together  if  disturbed  (  during  WC)
Tigers  are  loving  the  planted  setup.  they  keep  searching  for  food  through  out  the  day   Very Happy

Did  a  20%  water  change  yesterday.  No  algae  till  now.  The  sunlight  is  not  direct.  It  is  diffused  from  OTS  roof.

I  removed  snails  from  this  tank  -  afraid  that  they  might  eat  new  shoots  coming  from  plants.

 hi  all
after  introduction  of  light  an  increase  in  plant  growth  was  observed
added  some  rosette  plants,  thanks  to  fellow  IAH  member.
brown  algae  is  almost  gone  now
added  some  gravel  (kappi)  to  increase  substrate  height.
my  light  period  is  7am  to  1pm.  and  5pm  to  10pm.
of  late  top  leaves  of  crypt  and  ludwigia  are  turning  brown.  and  a  brown  coating  is  observed  over  stones.  it  is  not  brown  algae.
is  it  because  of  extra  lighting  hours?  is  the  brown  spots  due  to  algae  dying  due  to  extra  light.  my  light  is  only  a  10w  led  tube

The  brown  stuff  is  diatoms  and  a  common  feature  in  new  tanks...it  will  gradually  go  away.  Ottocinclus  will  eat  it.

brown  algae  is  retreating.   added  4  small  swordtails  which  are  happily  munching  away  algae.

put  in  some  duckweed  also.  the  plants  are  growing  good.  did  a  bit  of  pruning  and  replanting.

Thinking  to  dose  using  EI  method.  is  fertiliser  dosing  needed  for  this  small  a  tank?
do  i  need  to  add  co2  also  if  i  start  fert  dosing?
