 Hi,

So  today  I  got  an  integrated  all  in  one  4  feet  tank  for  my  office  in  Salem.  Picked  up  the  tank  at  Edwards  Aquariums  which  I  am  told  is  a  reputed  old  LFS  here  in  Salem.  It  comes  with  a  sturdy  and  quite  good  looking  table.  The  tank  comes  with  a  top  filter  and  i  plan  to  add  ceramic  rings  and  bio  balls  to  one  of  the  compartments  and  good  old  filter  floss  to  the  other.  Apart  from  this  planning  to  add  another  sponge  filter  to  the  tank  for  bio  filtration.  Substrate  will  be  river  sand  and  planning  to  add  a  few  river  stones  and  driftwood  for  the  hard  scape.  stocking  will  consist  of  9  goldfish  (Vaastu)..planning  to  add  a  couple  of  airstones  for  extra  oxygenation  and  also  maybe  a  power  head  for  agitation,  I  am  somehow  unsure  of  the  filtration  being  adequate.  Im  trying  to  find  info  on  how  to  make  the  top  filter  more  effective  but  unable  to  find  enough  information  online.

Its  a  simple  setup  which  will  have  to  be  low  maintenance  and  beautiful  looking  at  the  same  time  because  its  in  the  lobby  of  my  office.  What  do  you  people  think??  I  am  doing  it  right??  any  suggestions  ??  A  canister  filter  would  be  ideal  but  this  comes  with  a  completely  packed  lid.  so  would  need  to  cut  out  holes  in  the  metal  hood  which  I'm  not  too  keen  on.  The  top  filter  is  around  3  feet  long  and  approx  6  inches  wide.  Anyone  on  the  forum  from  Salem  who  could  help  me  with  some  used  media  to  speed  up  the  cycle..

 Stocking:
 3  Ryukin
 3  Oranda
 2  Fantail
 1  Black  Moor

look  forwarding  to  hearing  from  you  guys!!

My  suggestion:  Go  for  an  internal  filter  which  has  a  good  flow  rate.  Let  the  tank  cycle  naturally,  don't  let  anything  else  speed  it  up.

 Cheers,

 Karthik

 Thanks  for  the  suggestion  Karthik.

So  this  is  what  I  have  done  now:

Setup  the  tank  today,  added  river  sand  and  a  few  river  stones  as  the  hard  scape.  started  running  the  top  filter  and  the  bio  sponge  filter.  along  with  a  600lph  powerhead  for  aeration  and  circulation.  Water  is  still  very  murky.  But  should  clean  up  by  tomorrow.  Planning  to  add  a  few  starter  fish  tomorrow  for  the  cycle.  These  shall  then  be  shifted  to  my  outdoor  pond  after  a  week  or  so  and  then  shall  add  the  goldies.  Should  I  add  some  medicine  now???  My  water  is  basically  Kaveri  water  so  no  chlorine  etc.  My  LFS  has  suggested  that  I  add  some  rid  all  medicine  when  i  add  the  starters.  but  I'm  not  too  sure  too  medicate  the  tank  just  yet...

Your  two  cents  would  be  appreciated  guys!!  please  drop  in  your  suggestions...  I  would  be  putting  up  picks  shortly  once  the  water  clears  up...

 Clapping   Cheer

since  you  have  already  opted  for  river  sand,  why  don't  you  plant  a  few  cabomba?

I  would  have  suggested  golden  sand  and  some  plantation  like  anubias  with  drift  wood

Driftwood  with  anubias  sounds  like  a  good  idea.  Will  the  fish  not  nip  the  new  leaves??  I  thought  goldfish  and  plants  didn't  do  so  well  together..

I  am  growing  anubias  and  ferns  in  Goldfish  tank..  Feed  them  enough  and  they  wont  nip  leaves.

 Cheers,

 Hi  Vpul,

 few  points  from  my  side:

 -  I  would  suggest  a  canister  filter  for  gold  fish  tank  but  since  you  dont  want  to  cut  the  tank  hood  you  can  still  use  your  3  feet  top  filter  with  different  layers  of  filter  media.  What  is  the  height  of  your  top  filter?  if  you  can  send  a  pic  then  I  can  help  you  in  this.

 -  I  dont  think  sponge  filter  will  be  good  for  Goldfish  tank.

 -  +1  Karthik  on  plants

If  you  add  cabomba  now  in  the  beginning,  they  will  get  used  to  it.  Also  they  will  breed.  My  gold  fish  breed  in  Cabomba  plants.  Then  I  shift  the  plants  to  another  tank  with  good  water  flow.  They  goldfish  eggs  hatch  and  I  get  lovely  goldfist  babies.  Clapping

Thanks  for  the  replies  guys..I  added  some  starter  goldfish  to  the  tank  yesterday  for  the  cycling.  Basically  some  comet  goldfish.  These  shall  be  transferred  to  my  pond  which  currently  houses  2  goldfishes  in  it.  Shall  be  adding  the  final  residents  after  a  week  or  so.  Water  has  cleared  up  nicely.  The  top  filter  has  the  following  media  :  1  compartment  with  1/2  kg  ceramic  rings  and  filter  sponge.  compartment  2  with  250grams  zeolite  and  filter  sponge.  Water  flows  over  the  sponge  and  the  passes  through  the  media  before  going  back  to  the  aquarium.  I  shall  look  for  some  good  driftwood  and  anubias  over  the  next  few  days  and  add  them  on  monday.  adding  a  few  pics  of  the  tank.  Shall  post  some  detailed  photos  in  a  couple  of  days  during  my  next  trip  to  Salem.

So  then...had  been  cycling  the  tank  with  the  4  regular  goldfish  for  a  week...today  removed  them  and  added  these  guys  to  my  pond  and  added  6  fancy  gold  fish.  3  Ryukins  and  3  Orandas.  also  added  a  bag  of  Seachem  Purigen  to  the  filter.  Dosed  with  Seachem  Pristine,  Seachem  Stability  and  Seachem  Clarity  before  adding  the  fish.  fishes  are  all  very  active  and  doing  well.  I  am  feeding  them  Hikari  Goldfish  wheat  germ  and  Hikari  Oranda  goldfish  food  along  with  CP  optimum  goldfish  food  as  a  staple  (I  don't  know  about  how  good  this  is,  any  reviews  would  help  greatly).  Am  quite  happy  with  the  quality  of  the  fish  but  would  like  to  add  a  couple  of  lion  heads  and  a  black  moor  to  the  mix  which  would  complete  the  stocking.  will  put  up  some  pics  next  week  surely.
