 Hi,
Just  wanted  to  know  the  steps  and  care  that  you  folks  take  after  getting  the  plants  from  shipping  before  introducing  them  to  the  main  tank.

Do  you  folks  quarentine  them  before  introducing  just  like  introducing  new  fishes  as  these  might  as  well  carry  chemicals  and  other  diseases  that  might  harm  the  fish  in  the  main  tank,  Or  do  you  folks  just  Tweeze  them  in.

I  prepare  a  solution  of  poash  alum  and  give  them  a  5  min  dip.
Wash  with  clean  water,  clean  palnts  for  snail  eggs  etc.
Let  them  remain  them  in  a  seperate  tub  or  bucket  for  2  days,  and  then  plant  them.
However  so  far  I  have  not  bought  any  costly  or  delicate  plants  so  I  don't  whether  this  method  can  be  followed  for  them.

 Sandeep,
Do  you  leave  the  plants  to  float  for  2  days???  Do  you  add  fertilisers  to  them  these  2  days  if  so  is  that  just  PMDD...
Any  care  on  lighting  for  these  2  days  and  how  about  Co2????

Also  whats  the  purpose  of  adding  postash  alum????

 For  potting  them,
Can  you  let  me  know  what  goes  into  the  pot,  Will  it  be  just  laterite  and  gravel  over  the  top  ????

The  reason  i  am  asking  you  these  are  i  am  planning  to  get  the  delicate  ones  which  are  also  costly...

Yes,  The  logic  I  follow  is  that  if  plant  contains  any  parasite,  then  in  absence  of  fish  it  will  die  off  like  ick  etc.

As  a  thumb  rule  I  don't  like  to  give  fertilizer  to  plants  at  least  one  month  after  planting,  but  this  is  possible  only  the  the  whole  tank  is  being  set  up  afresh,  In  a  established  tank  it  is  not  possible.
Plants  take  time  before  getting  establised,  i  the  first  two  months  if  the  plant  does  not  die  on  me  I  am  sure  that  it  will  grow.

Snails  are  a  major  hassle,  evenmore  so  in  planted  tanks.  Once  you  get  snails  in  your  tank  I  have  not  yet  met  with  a  safe  method  of  getting  rid  of  them.  There  is  old  thread  by  nag  on  eradicating  snail,  eggs  by  potash  alum.  I  ahve  found  it  very  effective.
I  even  treat  my  susbtrate  by  potash  alum  and  the  snails  seem  to  be  athing  of  past.

I  use  river  sand  topped  by  gravel  in  my  pots.  In  you  are  using  laterite  make  it  bottom  most  layer.
I  have  already  told  you  that  I  have  not  planted  any  costly/delicate  palnts  so  i  cannot  foretell  how  my  methods  will  work  with  them

 Sandeep,

I  have  had  good  results  in  eradicating  Snails  from  the  tank  by  using  Clown  Loach.  The  key  is  to  introduce  the  same  before  the  snail  population  explodes.

One  aspect  to  consider  is  the  compatability  of  Clown  Loaches  with  the  other  inmates  of  the  tank

 Regards
 Bala

Loaches  are  good  at  eating  snails,  I  have  used  yo-yo  loaches  for  the  same.  However  the  problem  is  what  do  you  do  with  loaches  when  snails  are  gone.  Smile
Also  loaches  do  not  do  very  good  in  palnted  tanks,  their  constant  foaraging  of  substrates  gets  hard  on  delicate  plants.

 HI  Venky,
No  they  are  complearly  different,   Pottash  alumn  is  K2So4  (Al2So4)3  24H2o  where  as  Pot  Permanganete  is  KMnO4.

Pot  Permanganete  is  pink  to  purple   in  clolour  and  Alum  is  the  one  that  old  people  use  to  have,  the  stone  which  used  to  be  used  after  shave  to  quickly  heal  up  the  wounds  /  cuts

Well  its  a  good  idea  to  leave  it  afloat  for  a  day  in  a  bucket  with  micro  nutrients  added  to  it.  This  i  normally  do  when  the  plants   have  come  to  me  after  a  long  shipping  time,  the  idea  behind  doin  this  is  to  revitalize  the  root  system.  It  definately  helps.

There  is  no  need  for  any  of  that  i  would  recomend  this  only  for  a  span  of  24hrs.

There  is  no  need  for  u  to  retain  the  pots  that  the  plants  came  in.  I  am  guessing  that  your  tank  has   a  substrate  in  it  already.  What  u  should  do  is  for  plants  with  delicate  root  system  like  HC  ,  Glooso  etc  is  to  retain  the  wool  or  coir  in  side  the  pot.  And  plant  this  into  your  substrate.

Finally  as  for  Potash  alum  i  dont  know  as  i  have  never  used  it  for  any  new  plants  that  i  have  got.  In  not  using  it  I  have  not  experienced  any  problems  to  my  fish  in  the  tank.

    Hope  the  info  helps.

Whats  the  purpose  of  retaining  the  wool  Â /  Coir

 Raghu

The  mineral  wool  the  plants  come  in  is  porous  and  so  is  capable  of  retaining  oxygen.
That  is  why  the  roots  of  the  plants  are  a  healthy  white  when  they  arrive  in  India  instead  of  blue.
This  wool  is  sterile  and  you  will  have  to  dose  fertilizer  if  you  use  it  as  a  substrate  or  with  other  substrate  for  the  carpet  plants.
Something  like  the  coir  mat  only  substrate  and  the  Glossostigma  that  Madan  is  experimenting  with.

 Hi  Raghu:

 Few  important  things  to  consider...

 1.  If  the  plants  have  reached  you  after  a  long  journey  (i.e.,  more  than  48hrs);  put  them  in  a  wide  mouthed  tub  filled  with  water  so  they  all  can  get  distributed  evenly...
 2.  Keep  them  in  the  directly  sunlight...
 3.  Add  Fertz.  in  the  evening...Next  day  morning,  do  a  100%  WC  and  keep  them  in  the  sun...
 4.  Later  in  the  night  add  Potash  Alum  @  5gms  per  litre  of  water  and  soak  them  over  night...This  will  get  rid  of  all  hitch  hikers...
 5.  Plant  them  the  next  day...

 Bye,

 Hi

The  idea  behind  keeping  the  wool  for  a  few  plants  is  the  fact  that  these  plants  have  a  delicate  root  system  and  in  tring  to  remove  the  wool  or  coir  mat  you  might  damage  it.  Also  planting  these  plants  along  with  the  wool/coir  becomes  much  more  easier.  For  example  did  it  with  the  utricularia  that  i  got  from  tropica.

   Regards
      Harshal.
