I  have  bought  some  50  3W  LEDs  from  Ebay  3.2  to  3.4v  with  max  current  as  700ma  and  15  Blue  1W  (3.2v-3.4)  and  5  Red  1W(2.0-2.4V)  as  well..
It's  output  should  be  2W  as  max  current  is  only  700ma..  I  want  to  connect  it  in  series..
I  am  again  able  to  search  for  drivers  and  have  got  42  -  50v  constant  current  LED  drivers  to  power  my  LEDs..

This  combination  of  LED  wont  work  for  3  footer  of  your  size..  at  least  not  for  a  planted  tank..
Dont  waste  your  time  and  money  on  this..
Buy  Cree  XML  10nos,  driver  rated  of  36v  1500ma..  connect  them  in  series.
This  the  best  and  most  efficient  way  of  doing  DIY  LED  lighting..
All  those  local  led  are  not  worth  the  effort..
Get  the  Cree  and  driver  in  aliexpress,  the  wait  is  worth  in  the  end..

 Hi  Nidhi,

Thanks  for  your  reply..  the  LEDs  were  bought  from  Ebay.com  and  which  were  manufactured  based  on  bridgelux  chips..  I  have  already  bought  LEDs  and  drivers  and  nothing  more  to  spend  on  it  except  a  dimmer..

I  just  wanted  to  give  a  try  with  it  and  if  it  isnt  going  to  work  will  definitely  going  to  get  Cree  only..  I  will  be  also  building  a  spare  PLL  fixture  to  protect  my  plants  incase  if  it  fails..  I  have  an  idea  to  connect  14  3W  LEDs  to  each  driver  totally  of  3  rows..

So  if  you  can  suggest  me  a  dimmer  and  how  to  connect  it  in  this  series  circuit  and  that  would  be  helpful  for  me  to  try  it..

Trust  me,  14  X  2.3  watts  =  32  watts  of  not  so  efficient  led  wont  be  enough.  Forget  dimmer,  you  may  have  to  supplement  with  extra  lighting  from  other  sources.

you  will  be  surprised  that  I  have  mentioned  as  2.3  w  as  the  LED  wattage,  the  calculation  is  as  follows..

3.4v  x  700ma  =  2380/1000  =  2.38  watts..  so  if  you  add  some  tolerances  it  will  come  down  to  2.3W  for  each  led..
so  each  led  might  be  rated  at  200  lumens,  so  14  x  200  =  2800  lumen  .  which  can  support  low  light  plants  only.

But  I  have  planned  for  3  rows  so  totally  3  X  14  =  42  LEDs  and  also  15  1W  Blue  and  3  Red  leds  which  comes  up  to  37  W  per  row  and  110  W  in  total..

I  believe  this  is  what  suggested  wattage  for  medium  lighting  even  if  it  is  the  case  of  T5s...  are  you  suggesting  that  it  would  not  suffice  still  and  I  can  add  some  more  as  well  as  I  have  some  9  LEDs  as  leftovers  as  well..?

Then  what's  point  of  building  a  LED  lights  if  you  can't  reduce  the  power  consumption..
Its  just  an  substitute  of  a  equalent  florescent  light..

But,  any  how...it  should  be  more  than  enough  if  you  do  3  rows  of  14  LED..

Yes  Nidhi..  Understood  it  very  well..  But  I  am  just  learning  it  and  doing  it  for  the  first  time..  So,  I  dont  want  to  lose  huge  money  by  investing  on  best  and  costly  materials  if  I  spoil  it..

and  also  I  am  just  going  to  use  it  for  low  and  medium  light  plants..  but  if  it  is  really  efficient,  it  would  be  high  for  my  tank.  So  if  you  experts  could  suggest  some  dimming  options  and  that  would  be  much  more  helpful..

Use  a  potentiometer  in  parallel  to  the  led.  The  current  splits  with  part  of  it  going  to  led  and  part  of  it  going  through  the  potentiometers.  Trun  the  potentiometer  r  to  get  the  desired  brightness.  If  you  put  the  potentiometer  Meyer  in  series  you  turn  it  the  other  way  round  to  limit  the  current  in  the  circuit.

Having  it  in  series  is  not  advisable  since  the  potential  drop  might  reduce  the  overall  voltage  across  the  led  and  the  led  might  not  work.

Thanks  Preeths..  I  am  not  getting  your  point  clearly..  Does  that  mean  that  dimming  cannot  be  done  in  a  series  circuit??

Dimming  can  be  done  on  a  series  circuit.

 Voltage  =I(Current)*  Resistance.

The  driver  outputs  36  volts.  You  can  connect  10  LED's.  Now  if  you  have  the  potentiometer  in  Parallel,  the  voltage  across  the  LED  is  36V  and  the  voltage  across  the  potentiometer  is  36  Volts,  So  the  current  splits  and  you  can  control  the  brightness.

when  the  potentiometer  is  in  series,  there  will  be  a  voltage  drop  across  the  terminals  of  the  potentiometer.  this  will  use  up  a  few  volts,  so  you  will  need  to  reduce  the  number  of  LED's  in  series  to  compensate  for  this.

How  do  I  need  to  calculate  my  potentiometer  value  now?  I  am  repeating  again  my  specs  for  your  easy  reference..

LEDs  specs  voltage  =  3.2-3.4,  current  =  0.7A,  Constant  Current  driver  with  40-50vdc  0.7A  current  output,  Planning  14  LEDs  per  driver..

Good  question,  One  reason  I  decided  not  to  bother  with  dimming.  I  did  not  find  a  potentiometer  to  my  liking  and  the  daily  chore  of  changing  it  would  get  cumbersome.

hahaha..  cool..  I  just  wanted  to  do  that  as  a  precautious  step  to  lit  my  tank  not  more  than  what  it  is  actually  needed..
