You  should  ideally  use  10mm  glass  for  the  sides  and  12mm  for  the  base  for  a  4'  aquarium.
I  don't  know  if  you  can  get  away  with  8mm  with  2'  height.
Use  of  6mm  glass  was  just  an  accident  waiting  to  happen  and  its  a  good  thing  it  happened  before  you  had  fish  in  the  tank.

My  bit  of  advice,  junk  the  tank,  get  new  glass  and  do  it  over.

I  think  you  should  go  ahead  and  make  four  feet  tanks  of  6  mm  thickness  glass.  The  base  of  8  mm  could  have  been  a  mistake.  As  long  as  there  is  no  sudden  movement  the  tank  should  hold.  Thumb Up
As  for  me  I  am  not  very  brave  and  all  my  four  feet  tanks  are  of  12  mm  thick  glass.  It  may  not  be  nescessary  its  just  that  I  am  more  comfortable.  Smile

i  have  a  tank  48  x  15  x  15,  bottom  glass  is  8mm  thickness  and  the  rest  is  all  6mm,  standing  good  for  about  a  year  now.

Would  be  appreciated  if  you  use  a  higher  thickness  glass  because  the  6mm  glass  tends  to  bulge  out  when  water  is  filled  to  its  brim  (not  advisable)
