Looking  for  new  tank  ideas.  I  already  have  a  36  x  18  x  18  with  iron  stand  and  Kerala  top.  My  "home  ministry"  is  telling  it
is  damn  ugly  and  need  replacement  if  i  need  to  keep  it  in  hallway.  I  am  looking  for  a  bigger  tank...

What  is  the  ideal  width  we  can  have...

Looking  for  a  beautiful  stand  ideas.  whether  we  can  go  to  a  furniture  store  and  get  only  hard  laminated  table..  will  it  hold  the
 weight...

Looking  for  a  good  lighting  system  and  budget  (without  fishes)  is  Rs.  10000

 Any  ideas  highly  appreciated.

Is  the  budget  of  10K  for  the  tank,  stand  and  lights  ???  A  lot  depends  on  what  fish  you  want  to  keep.  Cichlids?  Tetras?  Planted  tank?

 Please  elaborate.

If  you  want  a  larger  tank,  you  can  think  of  4x2x1.5,  open  tank,  planted,  pressurized  CO2,  MH  lighting  (or  6  T5s)  and  a  hell  lot  of  tetras.

Looking  for  4  feet.  I  already  have  a  fluval  304  and  aquaclear  300  which  I  am  going  to  use  for  this  tank.

Livery  is  most  probably  discuss  and  exotic  variety  of  Pleco  (sucker  mouth),  Also  looking  for  a  densely  planted  type.

The  budget  is  for  total  cost  excluding  fishes.

plecos  in  planted  tank  is  not  advisable.  they  will  destroy  plants  with  fine  leaves.  discus  in  densly  planted  tankis  again  not  advisable  because  they  tend  remain  always  hidden  and  water  temp  have  to  be  in  higher  range  .  discuss  in  plain  tanks  are  easy  for  maintence.  so  do  a  rethink  about  your  selections  of  fishes.but  dont  get  discouraged

Discus  &  plecos  are  a  bad  combination.

I  would  suggest  a  4'x2'x2'  have  a  few  plants  on  driftwood,  bare  bottom  painted  black  to  reduce  glare  and  have  a  dozen  discus.  With  minimal  lighting.

Get  hold  of  a  carpanter  and  have  the  stand  built  yourself,  you  can  also  design  a  hood  containing  light  fittings.
Either  keep  discus  or  a  densely  planted  tank,  you  won't  be  able  to  find  discus  in  a  densely  planted  tank.  Also  they  are  big  fish  and  need  lots  of  swimming  spaces.
Planted  tanks  look  good  with  streamlined  fishes  like  tetra's,  barbs,  rainbows.
Angels  also  do  good  in  planted  tanks,  but  again  need  lots  of  swimming  spaces.

The  stand  can  be  made  by  a  local  carpenter,  the  designing  can  be  done  considering  other  aspects  i.e.  the  amount  of  space  you  have  in  your  hallway  and  the  gadgets  like  the  filter  and  other  accessories  that  you  want  to  keep  inside,  my  stand  was  designed  by  me  and  was  made  by  a  local  carpenter,  it  has  three  sliding  drawers  in  the  centre,  both  the  sides  are  fitted  with  two  doors  to  accomodate  the  filter  etc.....

I  am  not  for  densely  planted  tank..  Needs  some  plants  to  create  hide  outs..  that  it.
But  I  want  a  discuss  tank  or  species  only  tank..

Do  you  guys  use  chiller  during  summer..  it  will  get  hot  in  hyderabad  during  summer..  any  ideas..

Anyway,  you  guys  are  really  helpful.  Thanks  for  all.

I  doubt  it!  If  I  were  you  I  would  not  depend  upon  ready-made  furniture  for  a  tank  base  but,  get  it  made  in  water  proof  marine  ply  with  proper  supports  right  up  to  the  bottom  to  ensure  it  lasts  you  a  life-time.  This  would  have  another  advantage  of  incorporating  your  external  filter  in  a  cabinet  below  and  also  designed  to  suit  your  room's  ambiance.
If  you  mean  to  say  that  you  want  to  incorporate  every  thing  like  the  MH  lighting  and  co2  &  plants  along  with  the  tank  and  the  furniture  I  guess  you  will  have  to  re-consider  your  budget.

Get  a  non  standard  tank  which  is  slightly  longer  than  4  feet  so  that  you  can  comfortably  fit  in  4  foot  tubelights.
A  Species  tank  with  Rainbows  (Melanotaenia)  /  Scalare  Angels  /  Puntius  denisonii  would  be  good.

I  am  looking  for  T5  lighting  recommended  in  this  forum.  Any  ball  park  estimate  for  the  tank  stand  if  it  was  made  with  water  proof  laminate..  I  am  looking  for  a  simple  design  slighly  bigger  than  tank  size.

 Cinciboy,
Look  out  for  the  lighting  sections  and  you  will  see  a  lot  of  discussions  recommendations  by  Harshal  and  myself  on  the  T5  lighting  and  Ballasts.

 Hi  cinciboy

As  for  the  tank  size  and  the  cabinet  to  house  it  in  I  think  you  have  already  got  some  great  suggetions.  A  48  *24  *24  tank  sound  really  good.  IMHO  I  would  recomend  putting  gravel  into  the  tank,  personally  don't  see  the  need  for  a  bare  bottom  tank.  This  can  be  semiplanted  with  driftwood.  As  for  the  lighting  you  can  use  the  T5ho  if  you  can  find  it.  Since  its  only  going  to  be  a  few  plants  in  there  you  can  go  for  lower  light  requring  ones,  2  T5HO  54w  should  be  sufficent.  These  tubes  are  arround  1149mm,  <48inhes  ,  hence  they  will  fit  well  on  a  4ft  aquarium.
 All  the  best

 Regards

 Harshal.
